WAMT....what annoyed me today!

Driving home this morning I was stuck behind a car doing 30mm in a 40mph limit. There's one lane each way and road is long and straight with broken white lines not solid (so overtaking is allowed,) traffic was light and conditions were overcast but dry, perfect really. Up ahead the two lanes expand to three for people turning right so I waited until we reached that point, indicated and pulled out, passed him and indicated and pulled back in all without exceeding 40mph. A perfectly legal and perfectly executed overtake IMO. I looked in the mirror to see the long blast of full beam headlights from my 30mph friend.

There are two annoyances here. Firstly that the other driver (who wasn't an octogenarian or hundred up and going strong in a flat cap whilst peering over the wheel and being hyper careful) was completely unaware of the speed limit despite the oversized 40mph sign at the start of the road and the regular sized 40mph signs placed at intervals. Secondly how often is it the case that someone blames me/you for something that's their fault/issue?

FWIW and I am not judging just saying "as I see it" based on what you have described.

The speed limit is not a target (where safe and situationally appropriate I too will drive to the limit).

Using a right turn lane zone to overtake is not a legal manoeuvre (they are typically hatched zoned areas) as prescribed by AFAIK The Highway Code.

The only correct overtaking situation would have been on the contraflow section that you say the road was.

Yes, being stuck behind a slower driver can be frustrating and his response was perhaps in response to your incorrect overtake???

All very worthy but you're wrong on just about every count.

It wasn't an illegal overtake. The lane wasn't hatched. I could have overtaken legally at any point. It's legal to overtake unless the lines are solid. They weren't and conditions were just about perfect.

It would have been safe to drive at 60mph on that road years ago never mind 40mph as there are no houses, no businesses and few turn offs, only two in fact. It's one of those stretches of roads that 10 years ago or maybe more had a 60mph limit but have since had a reduction.

I'll add your post to the list of things that have mildly annoyed me today :D

At least by not saying the limit/target matter was wrong, that you agree to that item ;) ?

As for the Highway Code as I recalled it..Rule 165 as here and I have made bold (not the must not under the rule number) the part line I was recalling though IMO there is obscurity in your favour BUT note the 'comma' as in the rule element does not rely on the presence of solid white lines in that instance i.e. no comma says the solid white line makes the rule dependant on it but with the comma is adding some qualification. IMO that needs to be "clearer English" to remove all doubt as it does not say and rather than that comma?

When I see a car behind me enter a right turn zone/area I would surmise he is turning right. If you were observed doing what you did by a Police officer and he stopped you what would you have said to him to explain your action??? ;)

165
You MUST NOT overtake

  • if you would have to cross or straddle double white lines with a solid line nearest to you (but see Rule 129)
  • if you would have to enter an area designed to divide traffic, if it is surrounded by a solid white line
  • the nearest vehicle to a pedestrian crossing, especially when it has stopped to let pedestrians cross
  • if you would have to enter a lane reserved for buses, trams or cycles during its hours of operation
  • after a ‘No Overtaking’ sign and until you pass a sign cancelling the restriction.

This;
The speed limit is not a target

There could be a thousand and one reasons for his only going at 30 :(. Perhaps he was just early for an appointment as discussed elsewhere :).

Your overtaking may have been legal but it’s obviously potentially confusing if you signal right in a right turn ‘box’ and then don’t.

His response was wrong though.

There you go, something else to be annoyed about ;).

It's a delicate balance. I've just returned from the Lakes and there were a few conflicting driving styles. People looking at scenery, locals going about their business and boy racers, Clarkson called it the best driving road in the country. Cheers Jezza!
If I see anybody stuck behind me I just let them go. Always meet them at the next junction or lights.

The real crawlers like woof encountered drive me potty as well though.

This is my big hatred. local road off the main road is a 60 limit but a number of people trundle down at 40. Downright dangerous and inconsiderate. Yet I look the baddie for overtaking!

You used to be able to fail the driving test by being "over cautious". Don't know if that's still the case.

My son in law, the traffic copper, tells me that any form of aggressive driving will get you noticed. What happens after that will depend on what you do next. With cameras on all sorts of vehicles, let alone police cars, you'd have to be very sure that you behaved in a manner which wasn't dangerous or inconsiderate.

On the other side of the argument: Driving too slowly might constitute "driving without due care and attention or without reasonable consideration for other road users” but this is a matter of judgement and the sergeant might get really sarcastic, if his coppers were issuing too many tickets that ended up being appealed. Doing 40 in a 60 zone is a good example because a simple defence is always "I was driving according to the road conditions and my experience", which is hard to argue against.

The main thing for most people, says my cheerful font of wisdom, is to realise that they're far worse drivers than they think they are.

I was once driving down a single carriageway road. There was a car in front of me and in front of that car was a slow moving vehicle. As we progressed along the road there was a filter lane for vehicles turning right. The car immediately behind the slow moving vehicle moved into the filter lane to overtake the slow moving vehicle. At the same time a car in front of the slow moving vehicle also moved into the filter lane to turn right. The car that was in front of the slow moving vehicle that was turning right braked. The car that was behind the slow moving vehicle that was trying to overtake accelerated. There was a cacophony of screeching rubber and crunching metal.

Personally I would much rather arrive five minutes late then be permanently late.

Last October, I had to go into the office to collect my new Windows 10 laptop. Because the new one didn't have the correct port for my external monitor, they gave me an omars usb hub which has a port for the printer cable.

All good until yesterday morning when I had to reboot the laptop and it wouldn't recognise the monitor. I tried connecting other devices via the hub but none would work. I came to the conclusion the hub was no longer working so I raised a ticket with IT who came back and said that I could collect a new one.

Drove the 21 miles to the office this morning and, when the IT chap tested it, it worked fine. It was at this point that I realised that he'd plugged the laptop's power cable into the hub and when I questioned it, he said that there would've been a software update that ran when I rebooted! :bang:

To add insult to injury, half way home, I had a nagging feeling that I'd left my mouse in IT. I pulled over, checked my bag and I had so had to turn around and go back!

Oops!

At least it gave the car a half decent run out.

Secondly how often is it the case that someone blames me/you for something that's their fault/issue?
All the time, its never their fault, whether they pull out of a side turning, dangerously close,
or some other stupid maneuver, such as right hand lane to turn left.
But its always the same method of apologising, one raised finger ..

Annoyance isn't the right term, really. Just a reminder. I had the cat converter on my Prius stolen (overnight) about 6 weeks ago and the £730 to replace it was fitting an aftermarket one. From the Toyota dealer..£1200. The problem for people who have them stolen is that the thieves know where the car lives and will,no doubt, return after a couple of weeks, infact one poor chap in London collected his Prius with a new converter at 12 noon only to have it stolen again at 6.00pm outside his home. I now have my Prius in the garage after taking down low shelves to the annoyance of my wife who used the garage as extra storage space for canned food, cleaning materials and we had to move the spin dryer out . I went to photograph a steam loco recently and didn't park in my usual spot which was just off the road but drove 100m to a Close with up-market housing .I even drove round the bend in the close so it couldn't be seen from the main(albeit minor) road. My wife is urging me to get a non-hybrid car. She has her own car so the Prius, which I bought from her employer in 2010 (it's a 2006 model)when they gave her a new car is mine. All I've ever spent on it has been for a couple of tyres and a new remote key.Miffed about the starter key..£176. I've probably forgotten an item or two but the spend has been minimal. £180 insurance ,until this last reneweal when insurance companies are wacking up the price to lessen the hit in January when they can't offer new customers very low rates but current ones a much higher rate. The tax is £10 a year. It's in excellent condition does 55mpg ,very quiet and a joy to drive. I really don't want to part with it.

The level of thefts depend on the cost of precious metals, the likes of the palladium ,rhodium, platignum that's inside the cat converters. and at prfesent they are.The older Prius's have high quantities of them. The thieves can sell the converters for £300-400. Other vulnerable vehicles are the Pre 2015 Hondas Jazz, (post 2015 the converter was moved under the bonnet which is much safer. Lexus RX,Toyota Prius and Auris, Those with the most expensive ones include some models of BMW, Porsche, Lamborghini,Rolls Royce .Even before the pandemic, which caused min ing to drop drastically, precious metal values were soaring. In September 2019 palladium was worth £1,300 per ounce and rhodium £4,000 per ounce.

Bloody scumbags.
Interesting post. Thanks for the heads up.

I was told a while back that BT used Aluminium for a while as a "cheaper than copper" substitute..............but with all that has been done in the intervening years there is apparently still some AL out there and the Cu to AL joints were/are still giving OpenReach problems :banghead:

You were told incorrectly. It was due to a shortage of copper caused by numerous conflicts in Africa.

Bloody idiots !
This used to be a fairly quiet place, I'm not saying there isn't crime, drug busts, a bit of shop lifting etc.
And the odd scrap at chucking out time in the past
But now it seems that every week some is being stuck with a knife, mostly they survive but not always.
Latest from the police for MK, yet another ( weekly it seems) section 60 due to fighting with weapons :(
What is wrong with these people?

Following a further incident of disorder in Milton Keynes today (23/6), a new Section 60 Stop and Search order has been enacted, covering the entire Borough of Milton Keynes for a period of 24 hours.
The order commenced at 7.30pm this evening (23/6) and will remain in place until at least 7.30pm on Thursday (24/6).
It has been put in place following an incident of violent disorder in Buckfast Play Park, Buckfast Avenue, Bletchley, which was reported just after 5.20pm today.
There were reports of a group of between 20 and 30 males fighting, armed with bricks and bladed articles.

I was out on the front doing some weeding today and a passer-by stopped and started a conversation..strange,it happens often. We're open plan. Anyway, my Prius was in the garage with the doors up and he mentioned that not many garages allow enough room. It's enough for me to get in/out of the car and long enough for it so I told him why it was now in there and all the problems associated with it. He said his daughter had a Lexus and, like yourself (from what you say...ie heads up) was unaware of the the proliferation of thefts. She leaves the car on the drive too but it's in a rural area so that's maybe why she hasn't suffered a loss yet.. I told him to Google 'cat converter thefts uk ' and add Youtube and watch the clips people have put up. I alerted him to the Catlock device. It's not 100% thief-proof but might make them think twice as it takes that much longer. Without one it takes them 3 minutes.

They cost about £200-£250..fitted.

Catlock company https://www.catlocks.co.uk

I've seen a Youtube clip where a converter was stolen in a street just like the one in the first photo in this link .ie cars parked either side so only one car at a time can get through. Cars were held up whilst they took it and they didn't even wear a face covering. Not re Covid..lol ..but ID.

Seems appropriate. Buckfast is a fortified tonic wine known as 'Buckie' in some parts of Scotland where it's popular with neds ...

The Abbey that gives Buckie/Buckshot its name is known to (non catholic) locals as Fastbuck Abbey. Interesting history as far as children goes too...

It has always been like that, where I grew up there were always gang fights. Thugs would carry flick knives, hammers and chains etc. This was back in the 70s, when you could get a kicking if you walked to a shop, that was a few streets away from the area you lived. Funny to think, the pensioners of today were the thugs of the 70s.

Just there was no tinternet back then, to learn of other areas crimes.

Way back in pre-history, I used to visit the Abbey once a month to check and service their dishwasher. The monks I met seemed decent enough and they often offered me small sample bottles of their main product. As I was going through my teatotal phase I always said "no thanks". :giggle:

This has only just started happening, maybe less than the last 2 years...
So plenty of internet access.
I'm guessing kids going stir crazy after / during lockdown,
and yes I say kids, some are as young as 14 :(

What annoyed me today
Our local outdoor music festival in north Wales, being cancelled again due to COVID
frustrating it’s ok apparently to have a full football stadium with fans travelling from all over the country but not an outside music festival

Same for me (although mine clashed with us winning the Euros on 11th July so not too bad!)

That said, these are pilots, managed and measured to understand the impacts on large crowds at events. Needed if we are to make an informed decision on restrictions. There have been a number of these already including a festival/club night in Liverpool.

Also, football crowds (and the only full ones have been in other countries like Denmark & Hungary) can be at 25%/50% capacity with little or no financial impact, as at the Euros level its all about the TV money and sponsorships. So no economic impact. A festival at 25% capacity would no doubt have to increase prices by 4x to make viable.

WAMT?
Bloody HMRC gateway.
I set up an account some months ago ( probably 12 + )to claim a large tax rebate. No problem there.
It seems that I am also now owed a small one.
I've tried several times to log in, but apparently my details don't match
I'm 100% on my "number" I have the email that they sent when I first set it up.
I'm also 100% on the password as I wrote it down when I set that up.

But just in case in the unlikely event I got it wrong, I did the password reset thing.
Confirmation sent of the reset ..
And still nothing matches ...

Oh well they can send me a cheque,
as I don't currently have the required documents or info to set it all up again ....

Ahh I see thanks I didn’t realise the football matches were pilots
Still frustrating though it’s not as if it’s Glastonbury it’s rock the park in Wrexham some rock tribute bands that sort of thing in a field
A few thousand people at the most it’s been running for many years here in August
The sad part is that the organisers tried to get help and advise from the Welsh government for a way of carrying on with the event within the Covid guidelines but the got no response at all

Well I know a lot of these are (may not be all games) but the thing I guess is that Wimbledon etc would go ahead with or without crowds but festivals and the like need them.

I don't think we would hear it over here in Runcorn, but we hear and feel the pounding of the Creamfields one, as it is in Daresbury.
I remember when we first heard / felt it. It was a strange sensation, waking up and trying to figure out what the thumping sensation was.

Did you know that Charles Dodgson was born in Daresbury and lived there until he was 11 years old ? He wrote Alice in Wonderland.

One New Years Eve when I was about 16 years old there were no taxis outside the La Scala dance hall in Runcorn and I walked home to Frodsham..6 miles. :)

I went for guitar lessons in Runcorn when I was 17 but the brothers, who had a group and played Fender Strats wouldn't take any pay. Probably because I ended up just listening to them.lol At the bottom of the street was the railway (above the street) just before the station. All changed now,I think..Howard went on to play base guitar behind Sandie Shaw on her tours.

Most of us gave up on that one ages ago.
Maybe no ministers are booked to go to Greece. :D

There are two things you cannot expect from any politician: honesty or logical thinking. On the rare occassions that they do appear, the other politicians turn as one and rend the mutant monster limb from limb! :naughty:
