Driving home this morning I was stuck behind a car doing 30mm in a 40mph limit. There's one lane each way and road is long and straight with broken white lines not solid (so overtaking is allowed,) traffic was light and conditions were overcast but dry, perfect really. Up ahead the two lanes expand to three for people turning right so I waited until we reached that point, indicated and pulled out, passed him and indicated and pulled back in all without exceeding 40mph. A perfectly legal and perfectly executed overtake IMO. I looked in the mirror to see the long blast of full beam headlights from my 30mph friend.
There are two annoyances here. Firstly that the other driver (who wasn't an octogenarian or hundred up and going strong in a flat cap whilst peering over the wheel and being hyper careful) was completely unaware of the speed limit despite the oversized 40mph sign at the start of the road and the regular sized 40mph signs placed at intervals. Secondly how often is it the case that someone blames me/you for something that's their fault/issue?
