Total killjoys, I always thought Bob Monkhouse was clever, funny yet quite tame by the standards of the time. The same people would probably "cancel" Monty Python, Rising Damp, It aint half hot mum and Fawlty Towers.

I suppose that the problem exists because some noisy people always want to make others live by their standards.

The thing is, for every person who supported Mary Whitehouse, there was someone who supported anything that she wanted to ban. It seems to me that this has been true since the (more or less) hairless ape stumbled out of the jungle.

Agree - I would never think of him in the same vein as Jimmy Carr etc... most of his jokes IIRC were pretty tame and its simple, if there were any 'bad ones' dont read them out!
 
I liked him.

Everything annoyed me today. I did three DIY jobs and everything that could go wrong did. All ended with acceptable results but I did think I should just give up and try again another day.

Last nights wind brought down one of my antenna masts - a telescopic lightweight fibreglass mast. It snapped at about 5ft up. I've had issues with this mast before, in windy conditions it oscilates and telescopes down. I got fed up of pushing it back up, so taped the seems of the sections. It seems that I was rather silly doing that, and it snapped :(

But the worst part was that the wire ended up tangled in a neighbours tree, and he has moaned about my antennas ever since I put them up (about 6 years ago now). I will have to go round and ask nicely if I can climb into his tree.... It also means I have no radio to play with at the moment, and I'm not sure when I'll be able to sort anything out..... :(:(:(

They’ve done books before and you rarely see much, if any, of the content, they concentrate on the book guy repairing the covers, boards and binding. How was any viewer supposed to read these “inappropriate” jokes anyway, unless they zoomed right in on the pages? Complete overkill, probably initiated by someone in the Department of Woke Affairs at the BBC.

Without knowing what was in the book, there's no way for an outsider to make a decision on this.

The people who have looked at it may well have seen something that, these days, is controversial. There's no such thing as the "Department of Woke Affairs at the BBC" but the organisation as a whole has become more sensitive to matters that were consider normal fifty years ago.

Some will think this a good development, some will think it bad and my guess is that the vast majority will just respond along the lines of "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn". ;)
 
What annoyed me today and recently is eBay listings
It used to be really handy and cheap for small bits and pieces
Now when you do a specific search you get all sorts of unrelated crap come up
Also some listings are misleading I was searching for something yesterday and the listing showed a price range from 99 pence upwards the 99 pence one was for a plastic bag
This morning was looking for 50g sachets of silica gel ended up getting them from Amazon easily and quickly found exactly what I needed

I read that one of the staff took offense to a sexist joke!! FFS. Pretty much all joke have a go at some characteristic. I mean people like Sarah millican rip into men, along with many others. Stupid!

It's frustrating how easy and convenient Amazon is, although I am finding myself gradually distancing myself from it because of their business practices, in particular the "Most Favored Nation" policy, which is clearly about market dominance.

The review system can be sneaky as well with the old bait-and-switch being done. It's against policy, but they seem to get around it by keeping the product similar, or just changing the model number. But that can sometimes make all the difference with reliability etc.

I would love to support local businesses, but sometimes they do make it difficult to do so, if even possible at all.

Yeah, feel bad for using them all the time but with free delivery, free returns and good prices its hard to look anywhere else

Yes that’s the problem they do make it easy do try to shop locally but not always possible

How very bizarre......

Surely in binding/rebinding a book there is no need to display the pages or it's contents and expose(?) them to sensitive public eyes.

If the contents are seen as risque then that can be covered in the preamble chat about the book in an appropriate manner.

PS it gives me pause to wonder if as in the NI cake case, it was the bookbinders beliefs that meant s/he was unwilling to do the job???

I was once fortunate enough to see Bob Monkhouse live. When he got into his stride the whole audience was laughing to such an extent he had to pause before continuing.

The one I still remember is this one, no swearing or offensive language which is so common nowadays, just a little story.

He was the comedian in a seaside show which had a permanent female chorus line. The leader of that group found him very attractive and invited him around to her flat for the evening.

She told him that he would really like her flat as it had mirrors on the floor, the walls and the ceiling. Her last comment was "Don't forget to bring a bottle" The punch line?

"I was so innocent I took a bottle of Windowline"
 
The backlight on our living room Samsung TV went and unfortunately no TV repair company will touch it as apparently the backlights are now glued in place rather than being screwed and there's too much risk of cracking the display. That annoyed me.

The new TV arrived yesterday and setting it up took quite a while and we needed to use both my phone and tablet. That annoyed me. Remember when we just turned new TV's on and tuned them in? One last thing annoyed me, these things aren't just TV's anymore, they're surveillance devices.

What make did you get ? We have an LG 50" smart TV after consulting the Which ? magazine. Just not enough room for the 55" in the living room corner by the entrance to the dining room. They spy on viewers do they ?

Yes, setting up these smart TVs is so frustrating and time consuming we got the Currys tech to do it We have surround sound ,too so that has to be connected..He set up Youtube,too and with it's 'press and hold the number 1key for 'quick access'. I now have to sign up to HBO Max who have taken over TNT Sport who took over BT Sport. It's a darned QR code,then passwords.

We went for another Samsung. 50". They seem to have gone down the same dispose of after a few years route as some other makes now though. I've watched a few vids by a TV repair guy on Youtube who complains about the backlight issue and the nosedive in quality and repairability. I'm sure I remember someone looking at a "must be repairable" law/requirement but I haven't heard anything for years now. IMHO these things should be repairable.

Re the set up. I hate doing things like this so I handed my phone to Mrs WW but sadly she can't hold a phone without touching the screen and she said Yes to the TV recording everything we say option without reading the screen... which nearly caused an argument and at that point I did gently take over the phone... but I can't see any reference to this in the setup although reverting to factory settings might give us the option of saying No to that option.

What I'd really like is an option at the start of the process to bypass and say No to everything apart from tuning it in.

We have a 19" Samsung in the kitchen which has lasted 14 years and a large screen one upstairs which is probably older. These days I think we're lucky to get a few years out of one.

Couple of times the past few weeks I have been bringing the 500/4 into work with me, attached to either Z8 or D500 as we are in a Red Kite Hot Spot.

Every single one of those days, not a bird to be seen.

I am in work today before driving up the M40 to stay with my mother in North Wales. So, passing thought yet another Red Kite hotspot - sometimes I see 20+

This afternoon I needed to make a personal call on my mobile, only way I can do this is outside as work is NOT in a Vodafone hotspot. While waiting in the queue (doctor's) to be answered I counted 5 kites and 1 buzzard overhead and a cock Bullfinch 2-3 metres away from me. Of course, I do not have the camera or lens. So cross!
 
It's always the way when you see something you wanted to photogrpah. I recall going somewhere and thinking I don't need my camera for a short trrip and then unstable air appeared and I missed some great Cb clouds .

I saw a lot of Red Kites off the M40 .Chinnor and Watlington and they were doing what gulls do...follow the farmer ploughing the fields. We stayed an hour watching them. It was wonderful.

The gulls are doing what the kites used to do before persecution wiped them out! Hopefully, the kites will reclaim their territory and oust the inland gulls.

Seen a few down here over the years but I haven't seen one here since lockdown, when we saw a pair less than 1/4 mile up the hill.
