Fuji x100

So how many of you use the ND filter? I must admit I keep forgetting it even has one, but I'm struggling on really sunny days when shooting wide open. Is it right that the max shutter speed is 1/1000?

1/1000 at apertures bigger than f8.

1/4000 when stopped down to f8 or further.

In really sunny days I always had the ND filter on, often with a polariser as well. In fact I think my fn button was assigned to ND (now you can assign custom functions to the fn and the RAW button, so one to ND on/off and one to ISO was useful ;))

Same for me, I have the ND assigned to RAW button and in a sunny day its a massive help. I really like the Auto ISO function and so rarely mess with that and keep the Fn to get into the JPEG simulations as I tend to switch between Astia and B&W quite a bit

Well my Screen Protector arrived today and I've ordered a Gordy Strap, loving the camera so far :)

Has anyone used ND/Grad Filters on their X100?

My x100 is on its way back from Fuji as they repaired sticky blades. Assuming all is well I'm after a Gordy strap - where did you source yours Chris?

I plan to try it out with my filters soon too. I understand that the EVF compensates for ND filters so the effect is hard to see, but I guess grads should look OK. And OVF should show the effect of both fine.

I use the built-in ND for good light portraits as I generally shoot wide open. Ive got the ND filter assigned to the fn button. Would love to see the use of the ND automated in future firmware upgrades.

I've ordered my strap directly from Gordy Straps in the USA: http://www.gordyscamerastraps.com/

I'm assuming small 85mm Grads should cover the lens adequately so I might look into picking up a cheap holder and some Hitech Grads.

With regards to the ND filter. Does anyone still have problems shooting wide open?

Had an evening at the beach the other night. It was after 5pm so not as bright as it could be (yet sunny) and I still couldn't shoot at F2 despite using the ND filter.

My shutter speed was still hitting 1/1000.

What was your ISO?

Just got my x100 back from Fuji UK after going back for sticky aperture blades. Service was extremely easy and quick and I've now got a new lens and a fully-checked out x100. I didn't have the priginal proof of purchase (I got mine from eBay) but Fuji UK didn't mind and repaired it under warranty. Excellent service.

Only thing I can think of is that being at the beach, if the photo incorporated a lot of light sand, then a few hours before sunset 1/1000 still wouldn't be fast enough.

On a sunny beach at f/16, ISO 200, you need about 1/500, and the X100 filter is only 3 stops. This is why I had to shoot with ND filter and polariser on at the same time in Seychelles.

I got a Gordy strap from here: http://www.tripman.co.uk/ Hard to find on the website, but I think he has them in different colours (mine is black with the red band, looks very good)

Should add - you won't see the effects of filters in the OVF! I have used a Lee 2 stop hard ND grad and can just about make it out in the EVF - more by looking at the histogram and seeing the foreground brighten. Alternatively you can hold the shutter half way and apparently you can see the effect if you slide the filter up and down.

That's good to know. I'll have a play.

Hey guys and girls - I'm new to the x100, but also love it already. Sorry if this has been covered somewhere already but 32 pages is a lot to scroll through... Is it possible when using the LCD finder, to have it always show the 'true' exposure, or rather the exposure you would get with the current settings, rather than the camera compensating until the shutter is half pressed? Maybe not the best explanation but hopefully someone will get me...

Thanks,

Rob

Had a look but sadly seem to have only the one colour at the moment!

I bought a 2nd hand X100 and it came with an artist and artisan leather wrist strap and it's quite, quite sexy. That leather smell when I pick the camera up.

I'm after a wrist strap, what one is it, any ideas?

$79 though!

Does look very similar. Mine is deffo A&A though, it comes with it's pretentious little box to justify spending $79 on it. :D

Cheers chaps, I certainly won't be spending $79 on it so will go for the Amazon one!

Well I got confirmation that my Gordy Strap has been shipped today, looking forward to getting it, just need to order a couple of spare batteries now and I'm all set!!

Can anyone reccommend a decent Circular Polariser? Had a look in Jacobs today and I'm sure I could get a better one than their own brand for £40

Also has anyone used a wrist strap like this: http://www.jacobsdigital.co.uk/p-43349-jacobs-digital-jacobs-leather-camera-grip-strap-slr.aspx

At all?

You could get a heliopan, b+w cir pol of amazon for around £40 :-)

Any suggestions for an SD card? I'm just using a basic cheapy sandisk at the moment and it's REALLY slow at writing RAW files and the camera takes forever to show you the pic on the screen.

I use a Sandisk Extreme Pro SDHC UHS-1 95mb/s card. Writes raws about as fast as it writes jpegs

Can anyone suggest any options for a small & lightweight travel tripod for use with an x100? Something that could easily be chucked over the shoulder and forgotten about, and that does not cost the world since its only for occasional use :) Hard to get an idea of how big/sturdy they all are from googling

Hey Rob, if you don't want to spend a tonne of money, Hama traveller mini pro has served me well in the past with an SLR. Pretty sturdy, ~750g and comes with carry case. Wouldn't use it for bulb mode exposures though, a few minutes is fine.

I've been using a Gorillapod SLR with a Redsnapper mini-ball head although its not always ideal, my Redsnapper Tripod is too heavy to take all the time.

Was quite tempted by the Giottos Vitruvian I was looking at in Jacobs, carbon fibre but £300 :(

I've seen plenty of Vitruvians literally fall to bits over the last couple of years, I would certainly not recommend them - save yourself some dollar! :)

For £12.99, bargain - one on its way
