Fuji x100

Mine arrived this morning but has the sticky aperture blades problem I think. Lovely shots at f2 but increasing overexposure in AP mode as I close down the aperture. I got it through eBay - anyone know what Fuji's position is on repairing these for non-original owners?

You can check for sticky aperture blades by setting different apertures and watching the iris as you focus. If they're sticky you'll see them physically fail to close.

If they are, best bet is to post on http://www.x100forum.com unless someone on here knows the answer ;).

Was it a used camera? If so, I would be inclined to send it back or at least contact the seller about the problem.
Manufacturers warranties on cameras are not generally transferrable ( except Olympus, as I recently found out) but it might be worth contacting Fuji and asking.

As far as I know Fuji will honour warranty claims by non-original owner IF the original purchase receipt is present.

Contacted Fuji and it seems they will repair this for free with no issues about me not being the original owner. Very good service from Fuji UK.

I didn't buy into the hype about the cool styling of this camera but one afternoon of it hanging off my shoulder drew admiring stares from colleagues, comments from a passer-by, questions from my son's school friends and a thumbs up from the local pro photographer. All my canon gear is ignored but not this tiny little thing.

Great to hear :D. Fuji are a great company, especially with their constant stream of firmwares, and recognising + dealing with hardware problems.

Just goes to show that everyone knows its a cool camera, even those that know nothing about cameras ( I wasn't referring to the pro here!)

Having an X100 does make me lust for the X-Pro 1, despite knowing not many benefits given 35mm is fine for me anyone crumbled here or is the price just too high?

Price is a bit steep, then you need the lenses! I bought the X100 and X10 to get away from changing lenses. I'll stick with what I have.
For now!

I love my X100 and was tempted by the X10 but settled on a Canon s95 instead, just liked the pocketability of it.

I had a play with the X-Pro1 at Focus and thought it was a nice bit of kit but... at the very least they should have put in a diopter adjustment, I know its petty but it put me off

Met my wife and son for a picnic at lunchtime and took the X100.

It really is a nice camera! All straight out of camera

I did notice a slight blue cast on some of them (WB was set to auto). Anyone seen that themselves before?

Couldn't agree more! The X100 is a different sort of camera, its for people who hate being restricted by too much gear.
If i ever needed the extra lenses again i would go back to SLR.
The X1 pro is stuck in the middle of both these cameras, id either need a compact like the X100 or the lenses and pro performance in which case i would do it properly and get a Pro SLR
( especially for that money!!!)

I completely am with you guys as well. I now use the X100 with the Olympus XZ-1 and it's perfect for me! Hiking over the weekend I'm happy I had these 2 cameras and not an SLR.

If fuji release a x2 converter for the X100, I'll be a very happy chap :) .

I probably will require an SLR at some point and I think only a full frame could tempt me (new entry level FF Nikon) ;)

can anybody advise me on what filter if any i need for the newly bought x100 and also do i need the hood or anything else.?
thanks

You don't need a filter in general. However, if you want to add something like a polariser or other filters, then you do need to get the hood, as it comes with an adapter to use standard 49mm filters. However, the official Fuji hood is pretty expensive. I bought a JJC hood for the x100 from Amazon for about £15. IT is metal, includes the filter adapter and looks good on the camera!

Not yet, but that's because I've only had it a couple of days! But yes, a pol is a standard thing to have with me and 49mm filters are easy enough to hide in a small bag or case!

thanks Cuchulaiin,I've ordered the hood, filter adaptor and polarising filter,I've been told i need a cap to go over this.

What is the latest firmware please anybody and does it include all the earlier ones.
thanks

1.3 is the latest.

It is like a cumulative update including all previous updates so you can go from, say, 1.1 to 1.3 directly.

A 55mm pinch cap from ebay for 99p does this job fine for me when there is no filter attached.

thankyou Quoth,do you use a mac or PC?im having a job getting the dmg updater to mount so I can update the finepix software that came on disk?
thanks

I'm a Mac man. You need to download the file and unzip it. Put the dmg file on the desktop and insert your formatted sd card so it appears on the desktop then drag the dmg file onto the card and it's ready to go in the camera

Oops. You may not have asked this question!

lol no Allan, but thank you for the reply,i guess your talking about the firmware update, now then you say you have to unzip it ? isn't the file ok as it comes?

yes the other question was re the update for the Finepix software for image uploading etc,i have the DMG down but it won't seem to do anything when i try to open it,
thanks

ok when I try to open the Finepix image updater FPVX363 it says ,*you can't open the application because PowerPC applications are no longer supported*

This is the Mac version i downloaded so have no idea why its referring to the pc version .

Did you install the FP viewer software that came on the disc with the camera?
I tried and it won't install on my Intel Mac, it looks like its designed for an earlier model Mac that used a PowerPc ( motorola) CPU. All Macs from about 2008 use Intel CPU's
The update won't install either because its looking for a PowerPc processor

charming, about time they sorted that out then:)

So Allan what do you use to install your pics? any help would be appreciated
thanks

I use a card reader and download the images to Aperture but iPhoto is still pretty good. I suppose it depends on what you want to do with your photos. I don't do raw so don't need anything to deal with them. Jpegs are good enough for me out of the X100.
I also have Lightroom 3 and Photoshop 9 and 10. They came free with various cameras, but I really haven't used them much so can't comment on how good bad or indifferent they are.

Allan

thankyou Allan i was wondering about Aperture, does it allow a lot more than iPhoto re manipulating images etc.Iphoto seems reasonable.

thanks

Aperture is very similar to iPhoto but is a bit more advanced. You have more control over settings and how the final image will look. I used iPhoto for a long time before Apple offered Aperture at a really good price. I think I paid £40 for it, previously it was almost £200!

Lovely walk in the sun with the family and x100 today. Oxford was looking glorious!

What's very nice to see is that the x100 works really well with an IR filter - this is a cheap 720nm filter I got off ebay. Checked it at work and it's actually pretty good in terms of accuracy - less than 1% transmission to 690nm or so, then switches on to 95% transmission over the next 30ish nm. The only processing was a click with the white-balance tool in lightroom to get rid of some of the red cast.

Thanks! We didn't realise the race was on till we got there. Watched a bit of it, but was too hot to sit still with the baby for too long!

I had a weird dream the other night. Opened a drawer and found I had a x100 I bought a few months ago! I wish.

hi Chris,i just got my x100 and the clarity and colours I'm loving, shall look into what you mentioned, only bought the hood and polarising filter and case and pinch cap so far.i can see myself falling in love with this camera.

I'm loving mine so far as well, I think I've convinced myself that aside from adding a battery and a half case I'm going to put the rest of my cash aside and aim to pickup an X-Pro 1 come the end of the year. Really love the Fuji handling and colours and I'd hope the price of the X Pro1 will be a little lower by then!
