Fuji x100

Will take a look, bought an Optech strap for my Redsnapper Tripod today so will give that a go first.

Also picked up a "Pod" in Jessops for £10, just a beanbag thing basically with a tripod thread, looks like it could be handy for resting the X100 on walls, etc for shooting.

Hi X100 people,

do you need to put on the lens hood to attach a filter? I would like to protect my compact cameras as much as possible, but dont really want the extra bulk of the hood..

Also, are the hood and filter holders on ebay any good - they're £12 vs £100.

So using a protective thread adapter filter doesnt add any significant bulk?

Tempted by an x100 refurb from fuji for 539..

The filter adapter adds maybe 5-6mm onto the front of your lens, not a big deal really

I just took a ruler to mine, 5-6mm is an underestimate - its more or less a centimetre.

Even then with the adapter it only comes to about 2cm.

travellingcello - is there a discount code to get the refurb X100 for £540? It's £600 on the Fuji site when I looked.

Ta.

I use a stepping ring to reverse the thread then a standard UV filter, the stepping ring and filter are about 2/3 of the depth of the lens with nothing on it.

I also use a screw on metal Hoya hood which is almost the same size as the lens, stepping ring and filter together so I have probably tripled the depth of my lens. And the camera still fits in a coat pocket!

I've been rummaging around in my old equipment and found this Nikon Pistol Grip ( Model 2) with remote cable release that I used on my Nikon film cameras.
It works perfectly and gives you ( strange looking) one handed operation. On the plus side, it is very stable and can also be mounted on a tripod ( as you can see)
I knew all this old stuff would come in handy one day. I never throw anything away!

You think that's weird? Here's my new addition - now I've been toying with the idea of buying a soft shutter release for literally about 4 or 5 months but have never quite understood how those things cost so much.... So I made my own out of bits of an old Mac iBook and a dead Zenit B tonight!

Here's one, this is my favourite one.....

Yep, it's pretty crazy.... I bet a lot of you won't like it, but it works wonders as a soft shutter release!

There are two others, I will post photos tomorrow...

P.S sorry for rather overdone processing on the photo above, it's not supposed to be serious and I was having fun using snapped for the first time on my iPad :)

There is - check out Hot UK deals,
plus £10 P&P so £550

totally agree - it is not really much more than a dome headed screw and they are less than a pound each.

I recently got on of eBay for around $5-6, the quality is perfectly fine, made of brass. I don't see why you would need to spend a lot :)

Just got a similar one off eBay for £5!

I'm also quite tempted by the same offer.

Has anyone here bought a fuji refurb?

I've not myself - however, I can vouch from dealing with Fuji on various occasions in the past on behalf of customers, that they do pretty quick turn around on warranty repairs with little to no hassle involved (as long as you didn't drop it in your coffee of course) So I dont see why if it comes with a decent warranty it would put anyone off :)

Another vote of confidence for Fuji UK - very good customer service. I'd take a punt on a refurb at that price if I hadn't already got one off eBay for about the same amount and without any guarantee...

Mine was a refurb. First was terrible - multiple faults straight out of box. They replaced it, though that took a week, so it was a little over two weeks from ordering to getting a working camera. Replacement was fine - absolutely love using it. There's definitely a touch of pixie dust on images from it.

I gave in and bought one yesterday!
It's charged, the latest firmware (v1.3?) is installed...and ready to go when I finish work today!

After the quick play I had last night, I think I'm going to enjoy this camera....and the main thing is it should give me new impetus to get out and shoot again!
Gotta say I love the optical VF!!

Out of interest where did you get it from? Prices are coming down for a new one I see

Prices do seem good, I thought £650 after cashback in Jessops was decent a fortnight ago.

Perhaps the X-Pro 1 is causing the price to dip slightly.

Well, after hovering over the buy button for a week, just gone and bought a refurb x100 from fuji.

I have the inevitable 'couple of questions'...

  • What case would you recommend? I want something small, that will allow use of the filter adapter. The fuji leather case seems a bit large for my tastes.
  • What speed SD card is recommended. I have read in reviews that a faster card improves start up time.
  • What other protective accessories would you recommend?
  • Any benefit in a soft release?
  • Any benefit in a thumbs up? Any cheaper ones available?

I'm looking at a Gariz or Horssbennu halfcase for mine, both look good and give easy access to the battery/mem card.

I've just bought a 45mb/s card which I hope will be faster than the older card I had but not had a chance to test it yet.

I've bought a Gordy Wrist strap for mine which arrived super quick from the US and I do fancy a soft release if I can get a cheapish one, seems to depend on your own personal feel as to the benefit though.

Thumbs up seems to be good to prevent accidental movement of the exposure dial, like you though I'd rather get a cheaper one, there are a few, will post some links to all of this when I get home!

Enjoy the camera its a cracker, had mine 2 weeks and I'm smitten!

Hi Chris, that Gariz case is a beauty. I was looking for sometiing that would protect the camera in a rucksack. May take a punt on the Horssbennu half case on ebay, looks good for the money.

ps a pouch that wouldnt make the camera too big, and protective enough so i can put the camera in gf's handbag would be great.

There's an Optech pouch mentioned in the thread that was reccomended to me that would fit the bill.
I plan to have a half case and pouch, half case for when its in use and pouch for in my bag. I believe the pouch would be big enough to hold the X100 with halfcase attached.

Hi Chris, expensive afternoon for me...

Bought the HB half case off ebay, and also had a Delsey D60 pouch while i was there. Got a 32gb card from mymemory. And a snap on lens cap, uv filter for protection, spare 3rd party battery, 3rd party hood and filter adapter and ggs screen protector from amazon.

What's the chance of a saturday delivery from citylink for the camera i wonder....

Sounds good! Why do people use those GGS screen protectors though? Obviously it protects the screen but I bought a second hand D300 with one on and it's awful! Colour rendition and sharpness out the window

I've one on my dslr and it's great. No problems with colour or sharpness. Wonder if they have quality control issues or if you were unlucky to get a duff one. Can see screen protectors being a personal preference thing too.

It may not have been a genuine one, GGS screen protectors are clear laminated glass, you should have no trouble with colour or sharpness. I had one on my D200 and D300 so I could chuck the plastic screen cover ( now, they are bad, especially if they gat scratched) and I have them on both my Fujis.
They are easy to take off and don't detract from the image quality at all, more importantly, they are tough and protect the screen very well..

Maybe mine is a fake then! Shooting a white background looks pink on it. Also the sodding thing is stuck on, will take some getting off. How do they normally fit?

Double sided tape. Get them off with strong cotton or dental floss slid between the protector and camera. Keep it taught and do it slowly. Any residue can be cleaned of with glue remover

I'll dig out the links to the Thumbgrips, I'm close to ordering one myself. Which seller did you order the HB case from?

I don't think Citylink work Saturdays so it looks like Monday!
I just ordered a new bag for mine. A Domke F803 Ruggedwear. I paid extra for Sat delivery. Hope it's worth it!
