WBMT.....What baffled me today

Wouldn't it? I can understand if bought at a farmers market but if in a supermarket like Lidl, how would it be different to the stuff Lidl brings in?

Everything Lidl bring in would have to be cleared, but the products they sell would not have to conform to the same requirements. It's possible they could sell products in their European stores that would be rejected.

I heard a caller to LBC Radio yesterday say that he's been looking into labels on oranges and satsumas.. "not for sale in the EU' .Any other food product,I'd imagine, too. He did some checking and found that in the US crop sprays are used on that fruit that are believed to contain carcinogenic properties. I've never seen labels like that on oranges nor satsumas but most are from Spain and Morocco. We do get some from South Africa and I recall a warning about insecticide use there, too. It seems that the US allow 85 pesticides that are either banned or in the process of being banned in the EU,China and Brazil.

This is from 2022. https://www.theguardian.com/environ...ium-dioxide-banned-chemicals-carcinogen-eu-us

February 2023.https://www.cbsnews.com/news/us-food-additives-banned-europe-making-americans-sick-expert-says/

I think this is something we need to watch as the government reaches out to the US re trade deals. There's always the infamous 'chlorinated chicken",too. That's not the case any more but it's stuck in the psyche, here.

We have a, now very old & weathered cast 'stone', birdbath (shaped like a scallop shell) that sits on short pillar approx 1 foot high. It is very heavy and by design cannot fall over/off at all easily.

Well, this morning we spotted it had toppled off of its pillar!

It is near our fence.

It is not damaged and the surrounding plants have not been trampled or disturbed.

Due to the very low CoG it would take some force to cause it to topple, so I am wondering if we had a fox come through during the night and it came off of the top of the fence landing on the edge of the birdbath with a enough momentum to do what we saw???

Edit ~ foxes weigh between 5-8kg and the fence is 1.8M (6ft 6inches).

Edit2
I found a Gravitational Potential Energy calculator and got this figure...
PE = 104.15539945742 ft·lbf

So @ just over 104 foot lb of force landing on the edge of the birdbath, just maybe it was a fox ???

I had an Email earlier this evening headed 'Suport Online' from, 'InvoiceOcean. " Hello . here is invoice no 2 of € 166.67. You can view it at Invoice2 . (Invoice in blue so the link) Best regards and then a large 'drop' to ...Agroni.

I've written that exactly as it is with a small 'h' re 'here' and a gap between the euro sign and the 166.67. A suspicious amount.. ie 166 and then 67. I haven't clicked on it as it means nothing to me. At the bottom of the page are three option boxes to click on. 'Add to expenses' 'Download PDF' and 'Preview'.

What might I have found had I clicked on the Invoice link in blue and if it was a scam would my iMac have been compromised just clicking on it ?

I googled the company and it's in Weymouth and by all accounts well respected as I did a Google re that. I read that's it's available re Apple App Store and I buy music from there but that appears on my credit card statement. I just buy songs for my iPad at 99p each. I've just paid my credit card and the 8 songs I'd bought showed on there.

If the company, from your research, is ostensibly legitimate then perhaps like the banks they should/could have an anti-phishing/fraud department with their own email address.

If so, like a bank the webpage should instruct you to forward the email to them.

Good idea. I'll check and if not I'll give them a call tomorrow.

Ours gets knocked off occasionally and I blame it on badgers leaning on the edge of it.

Got a reply from them .I've put **** rather than the live Email address and, of course, for the name of the person replying to me. They are, obviously, taking it very seriously and were grateful to be informed.

This has come up now and then. My Canon 24-105 F4 L EF died. It's a part that Canon knew was faulty..the 'aperture ribbon' but for years Canon refused to accept it but did in the end. I think I had it fixed years ago at the Black on White camera repair shop in Bristol.

It's a great lens so I've now ordered the MK11 and that issue has been addressed. I was talking to my wife about it all earlier today whilst she was on her iPad. She's on Facebook and she a couple of hours ago she had an advert for...Canon camera/lenses appear. I Googled if iPads can hear conversations and they can,as long as the mic is switched on. What the link between Apple and FB is, I don't know. It does seem a coincidence .She said she's never had a Canon ad pop up before.

Just picked up some extra contact lenses and was given an instruction leaflet with them. I need a magnifying glass to read the leaflet! My normal reading specs aren't strong enough, neither are the slightly stronger ones I use when I'm still wearing my contacts! Maybe I should have gone to Vision Express instead of SpecSavers!!!

Not just today but over a period of weeks I've had strange electronic gremlins.

The first to become a victim was my Sony A7III which seemed to have had a stuck menu option and changing it didn't have any effect it and it only returned to normal after multiple off and on, battery out and reset attempts.

Next was my Panasonic GX80 which inexplicably lost two custom setups and the only one remaining lost one of its functions. Redoing them all got everything back to normal.

My Ring doorbell stopped recognising movement and again multiple resets and setting up procedures were needed to eventually bring it back to life.

It was then my laptops turn when a shortcut stopped working. Deleting and recreating it fixed the problem.

So that's four gadgets which have suddenly developed niggles which went away in some cases only after multiple attempts to reset them.

How odd. Maybe I should have been on the lookout for little furry gremlins or ET.

New keyboard incoming?

Today... Saw a dog who didn't want a treat. The owner said he'll never eat a treat when outside. How odd. Maybe he thinks a treat will spoil his dinner.

My little man would have taken your hand off for a treat!

I had an email advising me that my Photium site has been added to a Travel Agents "directory"!

How the heck they think a photography orientated website is an operating travel agency is oh so odd.

Googling the name shows a slew of TA's are peeved by the uninvited & unwarranted scrubbing of their site details. There is TikTok site where "they" say 'we are not a scam but a truly helpful company.......for travellers to find an agent.....'!

They are... spaced out to hopefully break(?) bot crawling

baffled or annoyed, not sure but i'll post here.

Daughter had her masters graduation in oxford yesterday. It was cheaper to get a parking ticket (£50 but £25 if paid within a week) than have all day parking in a car park in town near her college and ceremony building (eg 2hrs parking max outside her college was £15). Couldn't do park and ride as we had dog with us and gear for him for friend to look after him all day.

Oxford is a bit of a mess right now about parking, transport systems and cars, but well done for finding a better value solution. Congratulations to your daughter too. :)

I photographed this pigeon at dusk..8.37pm.. It's standing on the partly-opened fanlight (I think it's called that ) of the bathroom window . I've just checked and it's still there. It's dark now...10.25pm. There's a flock of about 25 ferals that stop off on various roofs during the day and some roost overnight in the 30m trees across the road. It's a very strange place to choose as the window is only a third open and, as can be seen, at a steep angle. The colouring of the PVC should be white, of course but when I put the bathroom light on I was unable to see the pigeon. I used f4 and 3200 ISO...1/10th sec.....the best I could do.

It was still there, in daylight at 4.45am but was gone by 6.00am.

Ready meals are similar… the list of contents is usually ok to read (suppose they have to be due to possible allergies) but the cooking instructions are always in small print! You’d think that they would be really prominent.

I blame the 40 inch screens they give to the layout people.

If they all had to work on 9 inch screens, we'd see more 12 point bold on packets and boxes.

Not really baffling but also not annoying or giggle inducing...

After a loud jet (fairly obviously military - civilian aircraft aren't [allowed to be?] that loud) flew over earlier, we looked on FlightRadar to see if it was on there and it was - a Typhoon, heading for Torbay Air Show (as we had guessed - a guess confirmed by its subsequent movements). We followed it down and around and at times, it was jumping all over the place as far as altitude and ground speed went, as well as suddenly moving a mile or 2 in random directions. At one point, the ground speed was well below what I'd expect its stall speed to be but the apparent rate of climb was as impressive as it looks from ground level, so it looks like the audience god a good show!

Mildly annoying, but my phone has been acting up lately and the battery goes down very fast. I'm planning a trip in a few days and my phone dying down quickly would be a very unpleasant surprise.

Might be worth buying one of those battery packs that let you charge your phone away from the mains.

I bought this for my son and it's fantastic, it charges at "rapid" speed which is very handy. I was apprehensive about the integrated cable, but it's actually very convenient and you don't have to worry about losing a cable or it getting bent as it slides in flush for storage.

Worth checking to see if an app is running in the background using lots of battery, quite easy to check which apps are running and how much battery each app is using

Oh, I do this everytime, can't even count the amounts of me closing the apps running, and sometimes my phone even reminds me of that. I think it's just getting old, I'm currently looking for a proper portable charger as I don't consider a 3,5 years old phone really "old" and I'm not up to replacing it now.

THANK YOU!!! will look into that!

This isn't something that would, normally, be posted but I couldn't understand why ,an obviously overweight middle-aged man,who was also vertically challenged, would consume the following for breakfast this morning in our hotel(Tenerife).. No doubt my taxes ..he was from the UK..will contribute to the cost of his treatment for any of a number of overweight-related illnesses such as Type 2 diabetes ,heart problems or even bariatric surgery.

A large bowlful of cereal. Six large pancakes with what appeared to be 0.5lt of maple syrup poured over them along with some kind of cream, followed by four pastries with a generous helping of apricot preserve. All helped down with a large pot of coffee. His wife wasn't able to finish her four pastries so he had the last one of hers. As you can imagine, there's a really good choice of the usual breakfast foods but he had none of them. I really like pancakes, especially with maple syrup and clotted cream but six ? No way.

The messages here from the NHS are obviously not getting through to some people.

I am just pleased to hear he finished his breakfast(?) as the one thing that gets my goat is seeing folks take piles of stuff to their table and then only eat about half or less of what they have taken. :headbang:

The worst examples I have seen of that are the times I/we have stayed at Premier Inn and similar hotels.

Free world - his choice!

Lots of people dont exercise enough, smoke or drink more than they should. Lots of people eat white bread too!

Yep, that's what I'm about to do.

Thank you everyone, really, you've been so supporting to me on this :giggle:
Or you could just replace the battery.

We're thinking of getting an SUV sometime. It's easier to get in and out of. Today, we went to the Skoda dealer to get a feel for the Kodiak.

There was one in the showroom. It looked huge. My wife ,having sat in it said it was too big. It was a 7-seater. Two front..three behind and two more that formed part of the boot when flat down. It was a lovely bronze colour. Tbh, after sitting in it myself I thought it was too large for us,too. Then we went outside with the salesman and he showed us another one ..his suggestion to see one outside the showroom. We could hardly believe it was the same model. It just didn't look as large. I thought he was going to show us a Karoq. It's betwween the large Kodiak and the small Kamiq. He said the illusion was because the ceiling in the showroom was low..it is..and it's under the showroom lighting. I'd have questioned someone had they told me that would be the case. Anywya, lovely vehicle, the Kodiak . It was updated last year.

Bit late. I've just seen your post.

I was commenting on, not whether he had a free choice to eat it or not...he clearly has...but the liklihood of him becoming ill as a result of his reckless eating habits. I feel the same way about people (and my taxes towards the NHS) ,who smoke and who also drink to excess to the extent they become ill and require NHS treatment. If they pay private insurance premiums fair enough. Re not enough excercise, well, most times that goes hand in hand with over-eating and/or poor diet.

A Ps. Free world ? I suspect that the people of China, Afghanistan, Russia, North Korea,Saudi Arabia..most, if not all Islamic countries.. etc would strongly disagree with that statement.
