WBMT.....What baffled me today

While she should probably be on the Darwin Award list and is undeniably rather silly, she has lost both hands...

I wonder if the camera is OK...

..a phone, I assume. So,she tried to engage with it,then ? It's been suggested it was a Bull Shark, one of the most aggressive of the species. There are quite a few species of sharks around those islands and if it was aBull shark then that is not one of the common ones. Another species thereabouts, but also not common,is the Tiger shark, also aggressive. There's no-way you'd get me swimming in waters where it's known that sharks abound.

Yes, absolutely agree.

Knowledge and the perception of risk are interesting subjects.

There are sharks in pretty much any body of salt water - even round the British coast. The species regarded as dangerous are rare but not unknown!

What I don't understand is why some swimmers in Australia go into the seas off the north east coast despite shark warning flags flying. I'd never go into Australian waters.

Having to jump start an electric car.

One of the cars at work hadn't been used for a week, the telematics and radio flattened the 12v battery under the bonnet. Because the 12v battery was flat, when the car was plugged into charger, the car can't communicate with the charger, hence no charging. After putting a battery pack on the 12v battery, and the car coming back to life, after a couple of minutes the charger was talking to the car and the charging began on both batteries.

Baffles me why you still need a 12v battery to run an electric car, I would have thought that everything would have run off the main batteries.

The electric batteries on electric cars are somewhere around 300 to 400 volts, a 12 volt battery is needed for lighting on systems etc.

Mrs Nod's iPace had a flat 12V battery on Monday. In a car wash, so we were sitting in it with the "ignition" off but the AC and radio on for 45 minutes or so while queueing and being washed. All sorts of odd behaviour as it shut off! RAC got us going and put a new battery in.

There's no reason why you can't drop the voltage of the big battery by any amount you choose, given the correct circuit.

I wonder if the manufacturers have realised that it's too easy to run down those main batteries, leaving you with a totally dead vehicle?

Just like ICE vehicles...

To my mind you need the 12V battery to power the relays that allow isolation of the main batteries when not in use.
I have a Noco Booster battery which fits under the front seat which I use to jump start the car, There is a point in the fuse box to connect it to.
You need to keep it in the car as there is only 1 manual key point on my Toyota.
I got the Booster as we sometimes go away in winter and did not want to return to the airport parking to find a flat battery in the middle of the night.

How do you find the NOCO booster? Very tempted to get one as insurance against flat batteries but not sure which to get! At the moment, it would need to cover up to a 3l Diesel but that is subject to change! FWIW, the 12V battery in the iPace is the same as a 1l Corsa.

Well, if the ICE vehicle has a dead battery and you're on a hill, you might just get it going (I did that once).

Unlikely these days - the car needs enough oomph in the battery to power the fuel pump as well as release the parking brake. No use in an automatic either.

I have one rated to 7l petrol/4l diesel for my Defender. 27 year old 200K 2.5l diesel and yes I've had to use it a couple of times. Just adhere to the charging interval stated in the manual even if you think it doesn't need it ie do not just stick it somewhere in the car and forget about it. Your only hope of bump starting a Defender is down the side of a mountain

My car has a lever operated parking brake and I imagine that "bump starting" would suck enough fuel through to get the alternator spinning. After that, it should be fine.

Not if the car's fuel injection (pretty much anything this century.)

Thanks for that, Jan. Is yours a NOCO one or another breed?

My old S2a Diesel was comparatively easy to bump - didn't need to be switched on! Never tried the 90 (200TDi).

I have a NOCO GB40 which is supposed to be good for up to 3L diesel. Flat 12V batteries are not uncommon with Hybrids, they also have small 12V batteries

We have a 2.2 diesel motorhome, a 2.0 hybrid car and an EV , so far it has only been needed for the hybrid.

Part of the problem is the modern charging systems don't fully charge the 12V batteries, so called 'smart' alternators in ICE cars are designed to save energy & fuel. I suspect hybrids and EVs work the same but using electronics instead of an alternator.

Yes it's a NOCO. GB50 I think.
Mine's the lwb 2.5l station wagon. Originally the 12 seater now 11. 300TDi? A hefty beast. He'd take a lot of pushing. All 10 passengers, except I'm usually on my own

I have had to use it a couple of times so far with no problems, only needed in winter when it's always dark and the lights are used all the time and the car is not used often. For a hybrid it only needs to supply a little bit of oomph. I have the GB40.

Thanks for the replies. I can see a GB 50 heading this way!!! (Better to overspec rather than under IMO.)

I wondered if anyone might know what this is about. First off I didn't click the link to join the 'new' neighbourhood watch scheme. My wife is on the local Facebook App and gets all the local news,buy/sell ,reporting suspicious vehicles, what's going on etc.

I got this Email yesterday.

Hi John...

Your neighbourhood is now using a free Neighbour's app . Neighbours use it to find out what’s going on in your neighbourhood..eg.. recover lost pets, find free stuff or sell an old bike, borrow a ladder, get safety alerts, discover a great babysitter or recommended plumber and much, much more. It’s 100% free and just for your neighbours. It’s also a great way to connect neighbours in need with those who can help.

This link includes your unique invite code to join: [********]
(This code expires in 7 days!)

Sincerely,

Your Neighbours from Nextdoor.

I looked at the bottom of the page and in small print was...

Is this just to see if my Email address is live.? What would have happened had I clicked on the link ?

most spam just guesses email addresses as you've guessed.
Replying or unsubscribing does as you say, shows its real and live. They will then put you on other, what they call, mug lists.

Thanks,Brian. I don't think my Email would be a guess, though. They've ,surely, got it from somwhere. I've never heard of Uk Best Deals.

What have things come to when the best way to keep safe is to not open any Email you don't recognise having come from a known source or don't answer the phone when you don't recognise the number displayed. When the option comes up to 'accept cookies' or 'essential cookies only' it best to reject them ? I clear websites/caches every couple of days. I assume that gets rid of them all and any information they contain.

When you see an add on your browser, look in the top right corner. If you click on the triangle you can see who will have your information. If you drill down further, you will find who those , in turn pass it too. It will scare you.
You have the option to opt out. However it will reset, and you have to opt out every time you start a session.

Best deals usually pops up every time you search for a review.

I agree, scammers make you wary of everyone, when almost everyone is ok. Sad state of affairs.

WBMT is what kind of idiot buys a Tesla when they're not allowed to drive?

Ah! POTUS!

So I cant buy a salami or other type of meat to bring home, but we as a country can still import meat etc... I dont see the logic in doing one and not the other? Why would bacon I buy in Lidl in Cyprus be more dangerous than bacon shipped from a Danish plant?

No-one knows where the meat you might bring in by hand came from - probably not even you. The meat from an importer will have had to have vet certification and a paper trail demonstrating origins and showing it came from disease-free livestock. It *could* be falsified, but would be somewhat difficult to do.

FWIW I notice German salami has completely disappeared from all supermarkets round here.

Wouldn't it? I can understand if bought at a farmers market but if in a supermarket like Lidl, how would it be different to the stuff Lidl brings in?
