WAMT....what annoyed me today!

On December 19th we were due to go to a holiday rental in Cornwall for three weeks but my wife developed diverticulitis and the doctor gave her antibiotics and said she wasn't to travel for a few days. A few days later my wife still wasn't up to it so the doctor said no travel for another few days. No problem. We cancelled the first week and went on Boxing Day. We've put in a claim and the insurance company want a letter from the doctor. That's fair enough. My wife contacted the surgery and the receptionist said she'd pass on the request. We hadn't heard anything so my wife went to the surgery this morning.

She's going to get a letter but it will cost...£60. It seems an awful lot to me for a secretary to write a couple of sentences to be signed by a doctor. On the insurance claim it stated that a fee might have to be payed so that fee cannot be claimed back from the insurance company.

I bought a pen knife with a blade, can opener and a spike. It was £50 odd which may not be a lot but it's enough for me to expect someone to at least give it a cursory try as a part of quality control. Apparently not. When it arrived the blade was incredibly stiff and just about impossible to deploy. Doing 200 cycles by pulling it up and inserting a piece of card to pull on and oiling it (at the sellers request) didn't help. I returned it and got another and this time although the blade is ok it's the spike this time which is extremely stiff. The only way to deploy it is to force a screwdriver or a coin underneath it and prise it up. Cycling it many times again had no effect.

What a pile of utter poop and sadly it's made in the UK. I have to say that the blade is incredible though. Shame about the crappy make and total lack of quality control.

"Sheffield Genuine British Army Knife (2.75") × 1" I hope the ones they sell to the Army are checked.

Ahh! The dreaded thumnail breakers! My dad had an old Swiss Army knife like that. I still have it but only use certain bits of it. It's got to be about 50 years old and has not freed off yet!

Zero QC. I'm not impressed as if anyone had tried either of the ones I've had it would be obvious they're duffers. They must be thrown together.

An allegedly "good" make of 3 way central heating valve packing in after under a year. The one that it replaced was at least 35 years old (same brand - Honeywell.) The electronic board is apparently what's gone but the whole motor assembly needs replacing since the board isn't available as a separate part.

It appears to be the modern way and quite frankly an unacceptable change considering we are supposed to be focussing on improving the environment.

At least there's a 5 year warranty on the things.

I'm tired of the amount of things I buy that are faulty or otherwise just dire quality. I'm sure part of the reason is that there's no communication, no feedback and no consequences to anyone anywhere. Take stuff back to the shop and they wont care, I doubt there's any real feedback passed through the chain, someone at the distribution site will reorder and stock the same tat again and generally, no one cares.

Oh, just watched something about companies pulling out of China. That could be a positive move.

Aye at least that's something. Our LG washing machine came with a 10 year warranty and it's now about 13 years old. It can get a bit loud sometimes when doing the fast spin. It has one of those Direct Drive motors in it. The TV had a 6 year warranty, 1 with Samsung and a free promotion 5 year one with Currys (although I doubt it's worth much lol). Speaking of which, I never knew that the Richer Sounds 5 year warranty apparently decreases in value each year. Costco is apparently excellent though and provide a full replacement or refund regards of age during the warranty.

Another thing that often baffled me was Honda cars only coming with a 3 year warranty, despite being so well known for their reliability. I guess they didn't want to put their money where their mouth was. I quite often view a warranty as a manufacturer's confidence in their product.

Hyundai offer a different warranty period on their cars than Kia do, despite Kia being a subsidiary and sharing many parts.
My Honda came with a 3 year warranty which I extended to 9 years at a reasonable cost(some years ago now) one claim for a brake caliper recouped my outlay.

What annoyed me today, eBay seller (World of books ) sending a hardback book just in a plastic bag
It was only £3.30 for a new book but a bit of cardboard would have prevented the spine getting split
Will keep it though rather than send it back as its the Affinity photo workbook so hopefully I will learn a few things

I got word back today from my work pension provider (it's Scottish Widows) regarding my Flexi-Access-Drawdown. They don't offer it :( They also sent along forms for full encashment or Annuity options, neither of which I wanted (sigh). And it's no wonder my emails took so long to reach them, their only email reply came from Lloyds Bank.
I suppose the good news is they offered £150 compensation for ignoring my request for reply by email only.

Just the PIP forms to 'look forward' too now :( Anyone done those? Am I correct in saying you have to be uber careful about what you write/say regarding these?

My suggestion would be to find an IFA so that you can make an informed decision. Yes, it will cost you money but in the long term ensure you put in place the right decisions to suit you as an individual.

I wonder why SW didn't offer you the opportunity to transfer your pot to another provider that might give you more options???

Best of luck sorting out your pension.

For now. I'm leaving it, or at least putting things on pause. The money was to go towards dental implants but the specialist has told me I'm not suitable unless I have extra work done at the back of my mouth - a lot more than the 25% cash free lump sum would cover. Oh well, just another 10 years before I take it all anyway :)

I've had DLA/PIP for 20 years and yes, the DWP will interpret the things you write whichever way it suits them. Just be truthful and don't overshare. It should be based on your worst days so don't say that, on a good day, you can do all the housework and then go for a run.

"British FBI" reported on the beeb today??? Really! Do we really need to follow our (thankfully) distant cousins on the other side of the pond with everything? Even if we do, please call it something else!

I thought we already had the NCA (National Crime Agency) that acts across force boundaries ???

Allegedly to be absorbed into the new organisation, along with firearm response teams and drugs specialists. Perhaps :tumbleweed:

As a result of storm Chandra the 15m wide grass verge across the road was littered with plastic bottle, glass bottles, large milk cartons etc this morning, which had been blown there from recycle bins. The storm was well forecast and people could have put their heavy small food bins on the recycle box lid. I did that and put a house brick on the paper/cardboard large bag. It happens every time we get high winds on collection day. The winds were so strong last night that they blew beer bottles and spirits bottles across the road onto the wide verge and scattered them along it..about 20m. I used my litter-picker to get plastic cartyons..meat cartons, and the like out of the brambles. It took me just under an hour and I filled our recycle box and two large bin liners. I'll just have to get rid of them over the next two weeks collections and maybe use the neighbour's recycle bin if there's room. I returned one lid to a near neighbour and left a recycle box outside the house further along as I don't know which house it came from.

I honestly think had I not done it the stuff would have still been there.

The day after we get our Sky Glass TV (which relies on wifi rather than the dish), our broadband goes down. Have to wait for an engineer to come out tomorrow.

Murphy's Law? lol

Typical eh, when I got the new full fibre broadband installed I told them it was fine to cut the current broadband and use the hole in the wall that the cable went through to save drilling a new hole. Then what happened? The ISP never assigned an IP address to me, so we couldn't get it working and of course we'd severed the old (but still active) broadband line! Doh!!

Been fixed now, but it was avoidable. The engineer who upgraded our broadband a couple of weeks ago, apparently fitted a "dodgy splice"!

Train fares God Damnit!!

I paid for my Leeds to KGX leg weeks ago, very reasonable price of £24. So I've been waiting patiently for the return part of the journey to become available. And it has. £64! It just won't drop, it's been like this nearly two weeks and I have to book soon. What a rip off!

NEVER done that. Not EVER...

WAMT - Last week we emptied my mother's home of 57 years, ahead of the completion of the sale of said house. Today we get a phonecall from the police to say someone has broken in. I drive down from Bucks to NW London to find that 4 men with balaclavas kicked the front door in at 11.30 this morning, finding it completely empty they took off. I have now been sat in my car in the driveway for 3 hours because we moved all the furniture out last week and there's nowhere to sit down in there while waiting for someone to come and board it up. And me with a poorly foot too!

I put £50 of diesel in the Alfa yesterday from the local Morrisons. Fifteen minutes later on the way home, there was a warning beep and a message saying - "water in the diesel fuel filter". The car running OK, but this has worried me, because if you Google it, there are numerous posts about water in Morrisons diesel. I have got the receipt, so I will have a word with my local Alfa specialist on Monday.

Ask them (or Google) to see if there's a drain plug/tap on the filter housing.

Just Chinese quality.

I spotted a watch dial I really liked so I ordered a movement, case and hands and when they all arrived I set about assembling it all. The hour and minute hands went on but didn't feel right and the 2nd hand wouldn't go on at all. I could see that I was directly over the shaft coming out of the movement but it just would not fall on at all so I'm left with the question, is the movement shaft too big or is the tube on the 2nd hand too narrow. I think it'll be the hand so I'll order another from a different company.

The hour and minute hands went on but didn't feel right and the second hand wouldn't go on at all. Your two 'second hand's' have become hyperlinks to MPB somehow...

Oh yes.

There you go... Hopefully it still make sense.

It's a really lovely dial, enamelled :D I hope the next 2nd hand fits without issue and if not I'll have to try another movement.

Beep beep! Silence................................ Beep beep! We finally took out our BT landline a couple of weeks ago. No problems. Then, overnight, we get the beeps, randomly. "What is that? Where is it coming from?" Cue replacing all the smoke and CO detector batteries. Removing all the batteries from grandson's toys. Eventually the penny dropped. Check the box in the wardrobe where we put the old phone. Bingo! Switch it off properly and not just on standby! Duh! Can't remove the battery as it is inside and sealed for life! Silence reigns!

People or couples in cafes who take up a table for four when there are perfectly good tables for two available and not enough tables for four. Today I watched a single bloke do exactly that but more common are the pairs of women with a cup of coffee each taking up a table for four for an hour or more.

:agree:with this and add to it, one person with a portable computer who covers the table with paperwork.
