WAMT....what annoyed me today!

Anyone else suffered from this ? it only started a couple of days ago, we've had the car 5 years so I assume the bird is new to the area??
Territorial behaviour, it sees its reflection as a threat, breeding season is starting,
When I was working ( pest control) I had a couple of customers, local to each other, whereby a rook, was looking at its reflection, in the patio doors, and stripping the rubber out. I tried everything to deter it. There was only one solution that finally worked...

Had a Pied Wagtail with a similar obsession at the g*lf club. Kept attacking his reflection in several windows, especially during Spring. Not there this year so I'm guessing he's either past it or passed on.

If it's just the mirror that he's attacking, maybe a carrier bag over it would convince him that the interloper has moved away and no longer needs to be cr@pped on.

Acute lead poisoning?

WAMT Mums with kids in car, taking corners in the middle of the road at high speed (presumably because they are late for school!). I ended up on a driveway at one point! Grrrrr!

WAMT.

Just buying stuff on line.

I wanted a 4" 7 LED rotating base so I tried Amazon and Ebay and Google and found a blizzard of choices at just about any price point from under £10 and up to over £40. But. Most aren't actually 4" despite saying they are in the headline blurb and many are now USB powered. So how long is the lead? Do you get a plug with it? AC adapter? These and many other questions may or may not be answered in the specs but probably wont be. Oh and many are the exact same item with the exact same photos and the exact same unclear description of what might be in the box but at different prices.

The one we have which is now kaput worked for about 25 years, how long will a new one last? I'm guessing not that long. It's the same with lots of products these days and I do wish we could go back to the days when shops could afford to stay in business and some product quality checking and standards were enforced and not everything was generic Made In China tat in 100 different boxes at 200 different prices. I'd pay well over Chinese tat prices for a well Made in the UK one which wouldn't be the subject of an Amazon product recall due to risk of fire in 6 months time.

And Breath.

I fancied pumping hot air from my conservatory (often hotter than the rest of the house when the sun is out) into the lounge via a "silent" bathroom extractor fan in the loft. The range is extensive. The reviews are staggering with some not even working out of the box! Does no-one read reviews? Why do stockists stock a wide range of obviously "dubious quality" goods. It does nothing for their reputation.

I think there are three main reasons... Firstly most people just don't care and if something is rubbish they'll just buy another plus of course secondly it's difficult to make a choice these days as price doesn't seem to be in any way related to quality any more and everyone is selling the same tat. For example, you can pay £9.99 or £50 and it's the exact same thing or it's very slightly different and on sale at multiple suppliers with different brand names but made in the exact same factory in China. Plus thirdly there's next to no quality control in the factory or at the UK supplier.

Oh and fourthly, no one at the supplier or manufacturer cares as if the product is tat no one gets called into the bosses office and told off or sacked.

In short. No one cares.

Conversely, I've had a non-working fan from a well known diy.con shop. Took a replacement rather than a refund and that one's still going 15 years later.

Went to B&Q for a couple of bits an pieces, no checkout operators at all, just staff standing about to ‘help‘, asked about discount for self service;) they laughed, I suggested that‘ll keep them happy whilst they put my no longer wanted goods back on the shelves, went elsewhere and a assistant took my money and bagged my stuff. Best of all it was cheaper than B&Q.

Bought a sofa and two arm chairs from SCS. I was annoyed when they said they wouldn't take the old one away (the last shop did) but decided to still place the order. Today I hoofed the two old armchairs out into the drive ready for collection but the 3 seat sofa was too heavy for me to manoeuvre through the doors. I asked the guys for help and one of them grudgingly did help for about 20 seconds before declaring it wouldn't go out through the door and they had deliveries to make. Wouldn't go through the door? How did he think it got in? Santa brought it down the chimney? I just couldn't manage by myself and Mrs WW isn't too strong and couldn't really help. In the end I had to cut one arm off to make it easier to get it though the living room door and it took an age to get it out the front door as I wasn't strong enough to pick it up and get it over the lip.

So. I'm not impressed at all with the SCS Mr Shifters and wont be using them again.

Speaking of sofas, there's now a clampdown on these along with carpets, mattresses etc going to landfill because of the POPs. They must be incinerated now via the RDF route, but there are not very many EfW plants, especially in Scotland, and most of them have their annual tonnage capacity all tied up with the councils, so their remaining tonnages and also private recycling firms are going to have a real problem on their hands.

Mattresses can be recycled, so long as they are in reasonable condition, but after being in a skip or a local dump/recycling facility there isn't a very good chance of this.

SRF is probably going to be the way forward, but it does take a lot of processing to get the waste down to 30mm and approx. 15% moisture content. We also need the Government to open their eyes with this, especially in Scotland - which is ironic considering how much they bang on about the Nordic countries.

Phoned the vet yesterday as one of our cat's teeth was looking a bit ropey, despite our best efforts to keep them in good condition.

Anyway, phone conversation goes like this yesterday.................
me..... "our cat needs a dental",
vet..... "ok bring her in tomorrow and we'll take a look",
me..... "but I'm certain she needs a dental, can I just book her in please?",
vet..... "we'll need to see her first",
me... "ah right ok then",
vet.... "see at you 2-30 (no punn intended, I'm sure....tooth hurty), tomorrow afternoon",

So off to the vet my daughter and I go, it's just around the corner and we were able to walk,
today's conversation, in as many words,

vet...."how can we help?",
me.... "I spoke to you yesterday, my cat needs a dental",
vet.... "ok, let's have a look",

Vet proceeds to look at the molar I had pointed out,

vet..."yes, she needs a dental",
me..... "ok, I knew that",
vet,.... "shall I book her in?",
me..... "yes please, as soon as possible",
vet..... "ok, 10th March, 9-30am",
me.... "right oh, that'll do fine",
vet.... "ok, see you then, confirm with reception on the way out",
me.... "thank you".

I got to reception, she confirmed the time/date and then asked me for £36 for today's consultation.

I'm like, "eh?. I told you she needed a dental yesterday",
receptionist.... "yeah, the £36 is for today's consulation",
me.... :muted:

It's not the expense, the cat needs care and she will get it but I could've saved them the trouble yesterday and myself £36.

The dental will be in the region of £140, which is fair enough, I'd expected that.
It's not like our vet either, we've used them for years, they are brilliant but I do feel a little aggrieved today when I told them yesterday exactly what was needed.

£36 to open a cat's mouth and confirm what I'd already told them. I'm in the wrong job.

Vets are as big a money maker as the legal profession, just signed the last paperwork for my late mum’s estate, didn’t ask how much it’s costing, I’ll just have to grin and bear it. Licence to print money some professions.

Sorry to hear about the cat needing help @Dale.

I was talking to our vet as prices are mad here, she told me they are struggling as most vets are now going to Locum work and charge £700 a day for their services  :$ I had a £100 bill for quick check up (5mins tops) and booster jab for our cat.

Same with most things atm I think.

I don't grudge it at all, they are pros, I just couldn't understand why they didn't just book her in for a dental when I asked on the phone. They must have some protocol that states they have to see an animal before they treat it. The check itself was literally 3 or 4 seconds.

Ah well, I'll get over it.

Know what you mean we have recently had dental work done on one of our cats it’s really expensive but had it done because you have to look after them
ours (we have 4) also have the annual checkups and boosters it’s getting very expensive and they are only in there for a few minutes

Our vets seem to have quietly ended the practice of being able to request a quick call back for minor concerns (particularly when our first cats were young and we were nervous) in favour of chargeable video calls…

It’s the huge increase in our cats renal diet that is frustrating at the moment (from all suppliers). Many of the suppliers are not stocking it whilst they argue the case with the manufacturer, but our cat wont eat the other brands we have tried…

Our two cats (twin brothers) are semi-feral and have massive fangs for front teeth. One of them started struggling to eat so we took him to the vet. Vet investigated, announced one of his front teeth had started to go bad so took it out, kept him at the premises for a couple of days and gave us a course of antibiotics for him. Think that little lot cost us £500, or thereabouts.

A few months later my wife noticed the same cat’s breath was starting to smell, so we wrapped him in a towel to stop him struggling and I investigated. Sure enough his other top front tooth was starting to go bad. It was really wobbly though so I just gently pulled it and it came out really easily. We rinsed his gum out with warm salt water twice a day for a week and it healed perfectly. Cost: zero.

Every trip I made to the vets with one or other of my last two cats went something like this.

Me: (describes symptoms.)

Vet: "ah yes, he's got..." (some ailment or other)
"I'll give him a shot of this and a shot of this."
"£100 please."

The cynic in me screams inside.

I had to turn right out of a busy junction today but to the left there's a pedestrian crossing and luckily the lights were on red so I thought "Great" and started to pull out and just then a car drove straight though the red light. I suppose this just goes to show you should never assume someone is going to stop at a red light.

I don't remember this happening before...

I was looking for something on Amazon, found it and there's the price right next to it on the screen but click on it and it's the same item but at a slightly higher price. Just to be sure I tried twice and the same thing happened the second time too.

Come on Amazon. This is naughty.

Its has happened to me on the odd rare occasion, and yes I agree, its a tad norty

I've had it a couple of times and it was because the headline price was the subscribe-and-save price rather than a one-off purchase price

WAMT is a first world problem but still annoying. We have a couple of elderly neighbours who have carers visiting several times a day and when both sets turn up at the same time, they tend to park opposite our drive, meaning that we sometimes can't get either of the cars out. If it happens while we're out, we're lucky in that our next door neighbour is happy for us to use her drive but we try not to use that (very generous) offer too often.

Ordered new headphones and toner last night from Amazon at about 11pm yet was still offering next day delivery, Nice one.

Everything went through fine, then wake up the next morning to a text that my payment method needs to be updated. That's annoying.

The 'entitled' attitude of a lot of folk (though mainly the <20 year olds).

Went to town today and walking along the narrower pavements, those in pairs or more walking towards me are too thick/inconsiderate to move into single file meaning I either have to walk in the road or hold my ground and force the issue on them :headbang:  :bat:

Yeah I've seen those as well, but I was referring to check out, when the stated price is less that I was expected to pay.
It's not normally very much, but it all adds up for them.

Just do what I do. Stare at them and with confidence and authority say "Excuse me please."

I too get annoyed at phone zombie and teenagers who wont move until asked but today it was a middle aged woman who stood in front of the card machine at the supermarket so I had to shift her to pay. I've seen the checkout staff ask people to move before as obviously it could be an issue if people are typing in a pin but today if was left to me. So, "Excuse me please, can you move as I need to use that card machine."

yep I’ve had that I always stand my ground especially when I’m with the missus don’t want someone forcing her into the road

I find the least bad solution is to stop a short distance away, forcing them to single file past me. It's worked for the past 60 years. :naughty:

All good points and I have used all those ploys some of the time.....but frankly when I am moving I walk much quicker than most folk.....so I am motoring along and have little time to faff around.

PS the flip side is lack of courtesy when I do yield in circumstances where I am being polite & considerate.....I have been known to, when there is zero recognition of my action, to say "you are welcome....." and loud enough for anyone in earshot to hear!

PPS it is a 'funny' old life at times

Maybe its an old git thing, :D But I always say thank you, loudly, if I do something, like hold a door open, for either sex,
and they just barge though.

me too that’s what I do , last time was when I held the door open at the zoo for a guy who just barged through, I said thank you loudly, the look on his face was so funny made my day , maybe I’m a sad old git but it was funny

When I was working in the City I had a middle aged woman push past me as we got on the tube to get the only remaining seat. I said, quite loudly "Madam, there is no need to push, I'm a gentleman and would have offered you the seat".

She went from stoney faced to bright red in under a second  It just bloody annoyed me, it was so rude and a woman of her age should have had better manners.
