WAMT....what annoyed me today!

I find it very, extremely even, annoying when radio announcers say a particular event will take place "at lunchtime". It's quite a common term. How vague. On Radio Five Live, three times this morning, they've said that the result of the Conservative leadership election will be announced at "lunchtime" That can be at anytime beteen 12 noon and 1.00pm,maybe even 1.30. When I mentioned this to my wife she said it's 1230 . I Googled it. iNews have it at 1230 so what's wrong with Five Live ? It's like someone telling me they're coming round "in the morning " or "in the afternoon" If I, or we, are visiting someone ..they'll know what time and that's what time I/we get there. I really can't be doing with such nebulous terms . I get annoyed abroad, too when the bus timetable can sometimes just be guidance.
And ‘lunch’ doesn’t even exist in parts of the country ;(

That's true. When I was a kid up north or rather north-west, I'd be out playing football in the morning..school hols...and my mum would tell me to be back for dinner at 1.00pm. What we had at 6.00pm was tea. My wife (from Scotland) sometimes asks me what I want for tea. I call it tea as well.I think another name some use is 'evening meal' but an evening meal in a restaurant for us is 'going out to eat'... :D

It’s still that way in Yorkshire though I think “lunch” is creeping in.

As a southerner it’s lunch and dinner for me an tea is definitely an afternoon thing with cakes etc.

I’m not sure if this is just personal but “lunch” for me is 1pm. That was the time I always had it at work and I think at home.

Anyway the main point is saying “after lunch” etc is useless and much better to say after 12 or whatever -- and “after noon” would be even more confusing ;).

Oh yes. I forgot, you aren't native to God's own county.. :D

My wife sometimes goes out with a couple of her friends to here (link) for "afternoon tea" She said we ought to go and we did a couple of weeks ago in the hot weather ..sat in the grounds overlooking the Cotswolds as in the photo. I'm not into that tbh but it was very nice. It costs so much they have small cardboard boxes to take home anything not eaten. They wouldn't call the box as anything so crude as a 'doggy bag' but that's what it is...lol https://www.thepainswick.co.uk/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIk6LB7O79-QIVi5ftCh2KcANhEAAYASAAEgL1XvD_BwE

They go to another similar place nearer home, too. Infact, they went there last week and the sandwiches were cold, straight out of the fridge and the scons (scones ?..scons to me..lol) weren't fresh so she Emailed a complaint telling the manager that and that value for money it wasn't as good a the above hotel. She got a reply and an apology and told to come and have a free lunch ..for two (I mean the 1.00 pm meal) or the afternoon tea. I think, too often we put up with less than satisfactory standards but Brits are actually complaining more these days.

Just be thankful you don't live in some country's lunchtime is 2-5pm.

We had "dinner ladies" at school and that was down south. I say dinner is at midday and tea at teatime, my wife does not.

Yes, interesting point. We definitely called it “dinner” at school and I think we may have called the midday meal on Sunday as “dinner”. I guess the main meal of the day was was the defining factor.

I've heard that this is a bit of north - south thing, but I'm not sure ...

I grew up in Scotland, and I can't remember what my father called these meals, but my South African mother always referred to them as breakfast, lunch, tea (late afternoon) and dinner. My wife and I have always done this too, and I think this was the way she was brought up too, but some of her family members have other ideas ... it does occaisionally cause some confusion! :)

I think it’s probably overlaid with a “social class” thing too.

The only effect this discussion has had on me is to remember the catch phrase "You'll have had your tea" from Radio 4's "I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again". :naughty:

And that reminds me of, ‘Eat up, you’re at your aunties.’
I think of it as breakfast; lunch; tea; and dinner is later, especially if eating out.
And snack time is anytime you have a cuppa.

I grew up in Kent, and mid day meal was dinner. What we had after school was tea. I especially liked Friday's tea, as it was generally a couple of slices of brown bread, a packet of crisps, a banana, and if we were lucky, a penguin bar..... :giggle:

From darn sarf and as a kid we used all sorts of terms.

At Junior school it was Dinner ladies, but I would go home for Lunch. Some had school dinners and others packed lunch - I cant remember what it was called on the time table
At Senior School it was called Lunch Time and I took a packed Lunch

We ate Dinner at 5:30pm Monday to Saturday and 1pm on Sundays when we had Sunday Lunch.

We normally say what are we having for Lunch meaning 12 -1pmish and Dinner meaning 6pm-9pmish

Tea comes in a cup.

This might sound rather petty, but it was bloody annoying. I went out early this morning and the wife was working too. It's "normal" bin day, so the wheelie bin was left on the footpath as usual. I get home to find the empty bin right in the middle of my drive. I had to get out of the car and move the bin before I could park on the drive.

FFS, no wonder you're a bin man and won't amount to anything else.... Common sense seems to be optional with some people....

But are you sure it was the bin man and not some passing prankster? ;) :naughty:

Having had to recover my green bin from the next post code( plenty of others have also mentioned it)
I had a quiet word, now my green bin is often in the middle of the drive.
I guess they think it funny, but I'd rather that than having to search :)

I hate bin day - it's a nightmare in a wheelchair so I avoid going out if it's possible. It seems to me that most bin men in my area seem to go out of their way to make life as difficult as possible for pushchair and wheelchair users. A friend of mine who is blind would like to train her guide dog to bite them, but apparently that's frowned upon.

It's no wonder nobody gives the lazy tossers a drink at ******mas any more.

It's never stopped bloody raining here since I got my new camera.

Overall my local (LEEDS) bin men are pretty good and I can‘t call them lazy since they work at top speed all the way. I presume they are on piecework, or can quit once finished their rounds, as I see they are always making changes to how they proceed along my street.

If you are unable to move the bin outside you can apply to Leeds Council to have it collected from within the property.

At the moment we have 1 green bin for garden & food waste, ( voluntary and free)
black sacks for household waste
clear sacks for recyclables
and a small blue box for bottles and jars.
Next year we are getting 4 wheelie bins
1 for household, 1 for green ( garden & food waste) and 2 for dividing up the recyclables.
Can you imagine the carnage on bin day?
Plus many people have nowhere to put the?
No side entrance no frontage especially many of the so called "affordable homes" that are growing like mushrooms.

Oh and my bin ended up in the middle of my neighbors drive this time :D

Good grief - you haven't got bins, you have a whole recycling centre!

That's not the problem. It's the fact that they never put them back - they just abandon them in the middle of the pavement for the householder to collect. Of course very few are at home during the day so the bins block the pavement until they get home. I'm lucky in that I can use my legs so am able to kick/push a few out of the way, but fifty or more is beyond me.

And actually I feel for the refuse guys when this comes in.
They can throw dozens of sacks in the back of a lorry in the time it takes 1 guy to empty one green bin.
I hope they are greatly increasing the number of crews, or they will be working past midnight!

We have 5 bins. General waste, Plastic & glass, Cardboard & paper, Food waste (small), Garden waste (yearly fee). You soon get used to it.
The bins are normally left in the vicinity of the correct house but are often blocking access to the drive. We did have one neighbour at No 14 who ended up with 2 Paper bins, both marked 14, either someone having a laugh or they are breeding.
In general the refuse collectors are quite good.

Our bins (4 different colours) are to be kerbside by 6.30am on the correct day, but it can be 7.30pm before they are emptied, guys are always on the trot and there are times when short crewed there’s only the driver and one man so it’s out/in, move the wagon and repeat.
The wheelie bins are so much bigger than the old steel bins we had when I was young, why do we have so much more rubbish to be collected? One small bin a week and that would have the ashes from the fire in it too, are we such a throwaway society.

We have 4 bins. General, garden, recycling and food. General & recycling/garden are alternate weeks whereas food is weekly. I suspect the majority of it is down to packaging these days. Way too much plastic.

Also, our bins tend to be collected from 7am on Monday so they get put out on Sunday.

I know times move on......

But back in the late '60's one of my neighbours was at medical school and his holiday job was as a binman. IIRC when I asked him about it, it was not just about the money but he said they were a great bunch of lads to work with and they knew he was a medical student! NB he did it every summer holiday over about 5 years!

We have 3 bins. Garden, general & recycle (plus a box for glass - sometimes that gets filled up, depending on who's been over and what we've been drinking) :ROFLMAO:

I sometimes wonder how many people read the recycling notices on the packaging and/or their local council’s preferences.

Some packaging is quite complex. I remember a coffee packet that I thought was plastic with some printing on it but closer inspection showed the printing was on a (hard to) peel off transparent label and there was another separate plastic part, all in different recycling categories.

All plastics go in the recycling sack here.
And the guys working in the transfer station ( where it all ends up to get separated out) will sort it out.

I think that MK Council will change how often they collect the bins when the multiple bins are more widespread.
They said the reason to go with the bins was to reduce the mess left after the crows/magpies and cats had shredded the sack of people who put food waste into the black bags instead of the green bins. We have one house that does that and I told them to use the green bin, which they did for about 4 weeks and now the street is a mess again, but they don't clear it up as they are at work during the day.

IIRC Black and green / food waste every week, and the other 2 every other week, ie 3 bins out on bin day.

food waste into the black bags instead of the green bins.
That has always been my comment, along with wash out the recyclables, tins / packaging and there is nothing to attract scavengers,
Mostly its "why should I?"

Now there are well over 100,000 households in MK, the bins are costing an apparent £30 each ( see that end figure go up)
4 bins a household... I can think of much better things to spend £12,000,000 on...

that’s the problem nowadays people like that who can’t be arsed making life more difficult for everyone else:(
we have wheelie bins for normal and green rubbish so having black bags making a mess isn’t an issue

It needs a big clean sweep - not just the NHS but Care, Education and Housing too. Needs to be cross party and without any political ideology. What do we need to do so that the next 10,25, 50 years even can be catered for.
i have long argued that the NHS needs to be removed out of Govt hands. It just gets kicked around like a political football. As soon as one policy or change is implemented, it barely gets any traction before another change or policy is implemented.

Stopped off at my local Shell station to fill the wife’s car, cost on a par with supermarkets, out later in my car thought I’d just fill up that, mine uses the good stuff, Optimax, then I saw the price, 28p a litre premium for super unleaded over E10, needless to say I drove off and stopped at Tesco, price difference…… 6p.
Won’t be back at that station.

Question...

Are you tired of workmen making appointments and not turning up and not even having the decency to call to say they're not coming?

I am.
