WAMT....what annoyed me today!

wages seem to be dependent on the employer, some are better than others unfortunately.
...which leads neatly into this morning's annoyance: a bloke on the radio, who was described as a "self made millionaire", who was very annoyed about the proposal for a wealth tax. "I've worked hard for everything I've got!" was his claim.

He seemed oblivious to the idea that so had the people who'd done the work for everything he'd got... :tumbleweed:

WAMT? My memory.

There was some nice light this morning, so I thought I'd take my camera out with me when I walk the dog.

It would help of course if I'd remembered to take it - oh well, at least I didn't forget the dog.

Yes, and the argument of his kind that it’s counterproductive to give people more money (or the Universal Minimum Wage) because they won’t work should be employed to take as much money as possible off him in tax so he will be ‘encouraged‘ to make more;).

We now have a new TV. It has in-built Freesat and Freeview. We used to have a Sky box with the old one and after the main news watched Points West..our regional bulletin. After the main news a message came on the screen to the effect that the BBC HD doesn't transmit our regional bulletins so by inputting 101 (I think) I watched Look North(Yorkshire). I'm not from up as far as Rotherham but it was great to hear the locals speak. They have electricity outages due to illegal cannabis-growers around the area. There are 17 gangs in the town.

For Anyone else experiencing this lack of regional news bulletin the BBC say all regions will have their bulletins sometime this year.
Trying to watch Look North to get footage of anywhere East of the BBC's precious Leeds is painful, there's often really good stories set down here in Sheffield and we get about 2 minutes of footage if we're lucky.

Hence most people I know call it Look Leeds because of the Leeds bias.

WAMT? Trying to draw a graph at the maths course this morning! Graph work isn't proper maths IMO, and what the hell is the point of teaching anyone Algebra? Nobody ever uses it in normal life!

I don't know what it's like nowadays as I don't watch much TV, but BBC South East? studios were at Southampton or Portsmouth and it was exactly the same. I gave up on it and switched to ITV which, although the studio was in Reading gave lots of coverage to the surrounding area. Their presenters were much better as well.

I have no idea why we got Look North. It just came onto the screen as I faffed about with Chn 1 and 101. As a kid it's what I watched. I haven't seen it since it popped up on our TV..It's a new TV and we're getting to grips with the Freeview/Freesat. It's now Back to Midlands Today. A mystery. I mentioned that I enjoyed it ,it was nice to hear northern accents..hard A's and U's. It's Baaaath ,Maaasks Aaaafterwards. down here. Now we have Midlands Today it's better in that respect but we used to have to watch Points West. I've been down here ,from Merseyside, for years but have never felt 'at home'

I spent my whole school life trying to figure what maths was all about. One month doing building maths on an HNC building course and it all made sense because I could apply it to "real" situations. I passed Building mathematics with distinction in both my exams. Graphs can be handy to get a visualization of a load of statistics (as demonstrated by the government re Covid) but they can also be "manipulated" by unscrupulous folks to suit their own agenda!!!! Algebra is about replacing numbers with letters and vice versa which is a real pain in the rear if you are dyslexic (like someone in my family!). Often used to find the unknown (not a lot of people know that - as Michael Caine was reputed to have said but probably didn't!).

At college one subject I did well at was electrical science which included a lot of math but when I started work I was amazed and shocked how things were done in the real world, which was most often to guestimate based on the trials and errors of the past and repeat what seemed to work before. My first boss was amazed when I showed him the theory and a formula of how to work things out and then of course he just continued with the guestimation. I stuck to the science and afaik none of my work ever went bang or burnt a building down and I was never prosecuted. Which was nice.

Maybe schools and colleges do go too far for the vast majority of people but I do think that many people will benefit from remembering some of this stuff at some point in their lives.

I remember doing Pythag and thinking to myself, "What good is this in the real world?" Fast forward about 8 years and I'm working for an antenna manufacturer that specialisd in HF wire antennas. "So if this antenna is 26m long, what size mast does it need to be on, to create an inverted V?" says my boss.

(An inverted V is a wire antenna, fed at one end on a mast at 45 degrees to the half way point, where in then comes back down the ground, so an equilateral triangle. One half of which, must be a right angle triangle)

And there it was, a genuine reason for knowing Pythag. My boss was very impressed!!! I was impressed that I'd remembered it too

haha.

That's better than my boss ignoring me, and the math :D

I was hopeless at math when I was at school, which had a knock on effect on physics and chemistry too. My inability to cope with just about anything beyond arithmetic lasted most of my life until my daughter reached her teens and beyond. She was always good at math, now holds several science degrees, and has explained a few things which I wish my teachers had told me many years ago. Wouldn't say I'm 'good' at math, but a lot of it makes sense now and I'm no longer a complete dunce ... :)

Who needs maths - the answer’s always 42 :D

You MIGHT be able to choose one region from the satellite box and one from Freeview. Not sure!

But those people wouldn't have had the worry of being responsible for others, working 16 hour days, going without money some months to pay staff, being significantly in debt etc... Part of the reason why many put themselves through that is to be in a position to earn big money.

When tuning our TV's in you get multiple choices and one of them is Middlesbrough and I expect there are similar local choices in other areas.

I remember a few years ago we were on Holiday in deepest, darkest South Wales, and managed to get Look Leeds on a BBC Channel.

WAMT

See the Scottish smoke alarm thread

Thank you England for the alarm/storm created by the Grenfell Tower fire.

Wait till Mr Blobby decides you have to have these

But at least I’ll know when to take my pies out of the oven!! :)

Ok..I''ll check that. The only referrence to a region I've seen was 'Select the weather for your region' Well, that's brilliant. Whatever next with technology ? I think I'd like it to be a 20C sunny day. :)

I appreciate the tips you're giving me. Maybe, I should have signed up for the course...:D

Looking at the Freesat TV Guide, channels 950 - 967 are all BBC1 but different regions. Guessing that they're all non-HD.

Watching Top of the Pops on BBC 4 on a Friday night, they're up to end of March 1992 at the moment because they're not allowed to show episodes presented by Dave Lee Travis or the late Sir Jimmy Saville as both were alleged kiddy fiddlers.

Finding a damp patch on the ceiling which was from a broken roof tile and rotten underfelt. Roofer coming in the morning. Something that ten years ago, I could have fixed myself in an hour or so. SWMBO has banned me from under the car or up ladders since I fell off the steps and cracked a couple of ribs! (Only fell about three feet!)

I leave roof repairs to the professionals ..... My 9 year old granddaughter has banned me from climbing over stiles after I tripped & fell over one in the Lakes last summer. I ended up rolling halfway down a hill.... I suffered a few bruises & scrapes. To avoid upsetting her I had to mask my discomfort & suffer in silence for the rest of our walk.

On a more serious note a good few years ago my 80 year old uncle died after falling off a ladder while clearing the gutters on his house. What made it worse was he lived in a rented house & the housing association would have dealt with the problem if he had reported it to them.

I used to deliver prescriptions to the elderly and immobile and arrived at a house one day, with a 90 year old up the ladder and her 86 year old sister holding it...... cleaning the gutters!:rolleyes:

Last year my neighbour locked himself out of his house and came round to borrow the keys he leaves with me. Unfortunatately that was no good as he’d bolted the front door to stop it rattling in the wind (!). So he borrowed my extending ladder (good, light weight) as there was an upstairs window open. He proposed doing it alone but I insisted on being there ready to phone ambulance when he fell. We are about the same age, 85.

He shinned up the ladder OK but then got his upper half through the widow but due to furniture & his legs not being as good as they were he was stuck for about 5+ minutes with me footing the ladder and wondering what I could do!

It had a happy ending as eventually he hauled himself in without injury but I believe he has fixed the front door so he doesn’t need to bolt it!

Did you take some pictures to show him what he looked like stuck there? :D

We use this when sport is regional televised, usually rugby.

WAMT? I had yet another BT OpenReach Engineer out earlier, and he's basically told me not to use the landline and use my mobile for all incoming and outgoing calls! I'm very sorry but WTF?! So basically I'm paying for a Landline I can't use because I NEED a Landline to get Fibre because I can't get Virgin etc?

My landline is included in the broadband too. I have had Virginmedia fibre before but currently it would be more expensive and last time I looked not having their landline wasn’t any cheaper.

I don’t use the landline for calls — it would cost more than the mobile where I get unlimited calls & texts for £6 monthly.

I always leave roof repairs to the professionals we have a really good and relievable local company 3 generations and it's normally the Grandfather (early 80's now) how turns up to do the small jobs like loose or missing slates, ridges or flashings. It amazed me 10+ year's ago when he was around 70ish, frightens the life out of me now but never seems to bother him and they do a good job and not expensive so no thought of trying to get anyone else.

I booked to go and see Sing 2 at Cineworld this morning, just as we were on our way out it started raining bad, so I had to cancel the Taxi and stay in watching a recording on Sky of Wayne's World 2 and various Simpsons episodes, Wayne's World 2 was great though, and I'm still in love with Tia Carrere.

Why does rain stop you?

Because I wear a hearing aid, which doesn't like wetness in general, I only have to sweat a bit and the damn thing packs up.
Sorry to hear that! I wear hearing aids and have never had them pack up in the rain and they are not specially waterproof :(. I do wear a hat though and have other waterproof clothing with hoods.

I wear hearing aids and have never had a problem with them even after an hour or 2 of walking in the rain. I have a small tin that I put them in when I'm out on the bike - they don't fit under my helmet - and it takes but a second to pop them back in once the lid comes off. Like Richard, I wear a hat when out in the rain.
