WAMT....what annoyed me today!

I have just had my hair cut at home this morning. I bought some clippers at the start of the first lockdown, my wife has cut my hair ever since. I doubt I will go back to the barbers anytime soon. I have probably saved 2x the cost of the clippers by now.

Exactly the same for me. I ended up with two pairs due to delivery issues but decided to keep them both as they were half the price of the ones in the high street which were out of stock anyway. I have one on standby in case the battery goes flat half way through a haircut :D I cut Mrs WW hair using a guide thing she bought on line and she does the finishing and tidies the cut up.

Saving money wasn't really the point but both the clippers and the guide tool have paid for themselves several times over now.

And a PS.
My brother in law cuts his own with clippers designed for just that, it's same length all over but he's happy enough. Not an option for Richard though.

Ordered a flexi supply pipe for my compressor which arrived today. It was so flimsy, I thought "That isn't going to last!" It didn't! Built in obsolescense! Back to rubber hose it is then! Well, it isn't! I'm going to get one from an HGV truck supplier (the ones that fit between truck and trailer!).

Waking up to find my wheelie bin blown over and rubbish all over my garden!

One thing that's worked for me is making a bin bay by screwing four shelf brackets the wall, two low, two higher, and placing the bin between them.

I found our neighbours wheelie bin (emptied by the council a day earlier) in our driveway yesterday morning, it had carefully negotiated its way past our motorhome and come to rest next to our bin. I returned it to their driveway and 10 minutes later discovered it had made another bid for freedom. On my way to returning it a second time there was a gust of wind which blew my spectacles off, I last saw them scudding along the driveway. I rushed indoors, grabbed my spare pair and went hunting. Fortunately I discovered them intact apart from a slight scratch on one of the lenses :(

Oh well, I had been planning on a trip to the opticians anyway when the COVID-19 infection rate drops in our area......

I finished a tub of ice cream and I thought I'd keep the plastic tub to keep my metal lens hoods and step up rings in so I washed and dried it and left it on top of the microwave. This morning the lid is under Mrs WW's coffee machine to catch drips and the tub is still on the microwave but full of coffee machine bits and pieces. So, it looks like I've lost it and will have to put the next one to use straight away.

We have a number of 1 litre ice cream tubs (Walls Carte D'Or), they are used by our granddaughter for Lego building, each bag gets tipped into a tub.

We have quite a few which have been in use for years but in recent years the plastic of our usual ice cream tubs has got much thinner and they tend to crack very easily but this latest tub is a different brand of ice cream and the tub is much better quality and looks like it'll last a long time. That's a problem if it gets into the environment but good for me if I want to keep it and use it.

All sorts of tubs get repurposed here! Ice cream, mat wipes, sugar substitute, you name it! The little baggies that come with lateral flow tests are handy too. I use one bag per box of tests so have plenty of spares (IF a test was positive, it would get double bagged but negative tests/swabs etc. are as safe as tissues.)

The Walls Carte D'Or icecream tubs are very durable, good quality plastic, they get used in the freezer for food storage too. My wife baked a load of sausage rolls weeks before The December Festive occasion & packed them in icecream tubs & froze them.We have been thawing them out a few at a time ever since for snacks.

WAMT? I was trying to watch WWE Network (last night's Royal Rumble) on the app on my Smart TV, about 10 minutes in, the damn app crashed!

And no, I am NOT gay for being a wrestling fan before anyone even goes there.

We now have a new TV. It has in-built Freesat and Freeview. We used to have a Sky box with the old one and after the main news watched Points West..our regional bulletin. After the main news a message came on the screen to the effect that the BBC HD doesn't transmit our regional bulletins so by inputting 101 (I think) I watched Look North(Yorkshire). I'm not from up as far as Rotherham but it was great to hear the locals speak. They have electricity outages due to illegal cannabis-growers around the area. There are 17 gangs in the town.

For Anyone else experiencing this lack of regional news bulletin the BBC say all regions will have their bulletins sometime this year.

I just paid £8 for a haircut, they did a decent job but that's beside the point, under normal circumstances I refuse on principle to pay more than £6.
Wow. Really?

Assuming the barber does 2 cuts an hour (they may do 3 max). That’s 12/18 an hour of which they need to pay rent, rates etc… how do you expect them to make living?

I get that, there's a place called SAM's about 10 minutes from me that's good, but I went in a few years back and it was £9 for just a simple cut back then and it's probably gone up since then.

I'm not sure that any BBC regional news bulletins are shown in HD (yet). BBC1 HD is on channel 101 on Freeview and 106 on FreeSAT. On FreeSAT, 101 is BBC1 non-HD. (Confused yet?!) On Freeview, BBC1 non-HD is channel 1.

It's €12 minimum [about £10] over here for a standard men's cut, I never minded paying it as I don't get cut all that often. I usually left a tip on top so I'd give them €15. Since lockdown though I bought some hair clippers nad have been doing it myself since.

Last barber I went (2 years ago) was £9. New firm, big shop several barbers speaking some language that I could not discern a word of (maybe Albanian, somewhere that area) and had the most amazing service. I only wanted the clippers run over it but couldn't communicate this to the young lad so the boss took over and I shut up in admiration of his scissors speed & skill — went faster than electric clippers it seemed. And then there was lots of other stuff and flames! Got my money’s worth in entertainment

We also have Points West, and yes, it nod being in HD is a PITA, having to change channels just for that show.

My only problem with Look North is that any story not set in the BBC's precious Leeds gets about 30 seconds of coverage if that.

Its takes 10 mins max when I've been in for clippers,
So at either £6 or £12 per cut, that's not a bad hourly rate.

You’re assuming a queue of customers which may or may not be true :(.

Both me and Mrs WW are loathed to throw anything that might be useful out so lots of stuff gets repurposed and reused. As I was looking forward to having a nice box to put my lens hoods and stepping rings in I might just choose my next tub of ice cream by the quality of the tub :D

The one I used to go to, before lock down serves quite a large area.
It was always packed. waiting area for around 10. It used to be a fiver, when it first opened, some years ago, slowly crept to to £12, I've no idea what it is now, as before I've not been
in there for a few years...

At the moment, there's a fair amount that hairdresser/barbers have to do between cuts - every item of equipment needs to be sanitized and PPE should be renewed. Until relatively recently, they were supposed to leave a period of time between stations being used as well as having had to increase the distances between chairs.

Luckily, my hairdresser (for what little I have!) is live-in and a dab hand with the Wahl clippers. An all over #1 (NOT of the golden variety...) takes about 10 minutes but the tidying up of ears, brows and lip line take almost as long. I used to be able to do it myself but my left shoulder doesn't work well enough to do it properly these days and I rather like the pampering!

Mum told me today that I have a Psychologist appt tomorrow at 15.00, that's bad enough but then Dad's told me they've booked a Taxi to get there! I wouldn't mind but I know from old that getting a Taxi between 14.30 and 16.00 during term time's like pulling teeth due to the school runs as I used to have to travel to and from school in Taxis back in the late 80s.

Confused ?..Lol. Absolutely :D

We had a 47" LG HD TV. and through my Sky box we got Points West. The new TV is also an LG..55" Oled 4K . It has Freeview and Freesat in-built. Time marches on and we weren't able to connect the Sky box to it because at the tv end of the scart cable there's a USB connector, We need an HDMI connector.

Tried Chn 1 at 10.30pm. Still got Midlands Today. I think we might need to retune to Points West.

WAMT ? Reporting a test result to the NHS. Takes far too long and too much information to set up. Talk about big brother! Far too much snooping and distribution of my personal information on their "secure "? systems. It should just be :- test number and result.

In the tuning menu (probably!), there should be a selection of options for the region. It MIGHT also depend on which transmitter/repeater you get your signal from (on Freeview).

It takes about 30 seconds once you have the "account" set up.

So I got an email this afternoon from Laura, the support team leader, because the girl who normally comes on a Saturday can't work beyond 14.00, I had to ask Dad to attend a Theatre show at the Lyceum with me next Saturday the 12th! I wouldn't mind but I informed Laura 3 weeks today ago that I'd booked the show for that date, so she can't say she ain't had the required notice!

This is why I originally objected to weekend care, they keep pulling this crap of having no staff for extra later calls despite having loads of notice to juggle staff around.

Methinks a word in the social worker's shell-like is in order.

For Freeview. 8 Miles SE of Hereford at Ridge Hill. We've now by-passed the Sky box and taken the Sat cable directly into the TV. The coaxial screw fitting is the same. Still trying to see where to select Freeview or Freesat. I followed the instructions on a Youtube 'tutorial' ..as you say,it's in the Programme tuning ..but there's a step missing on my screen. We'll get there :)

After spending a lot of time trying to see what fittings I needed for the Sky box to TV (both ends were scart..no scarts on this new one)..my wife tells me, today, that she actually prefers Midlands Today.... Aaaaagh ! :D

By the way. The TV is the LG Oled 4K C1.Absolutely wonderful picture and it's not in 4K. I think only some output is 4K which is even better,I'm told. I assume that nature documentaries will be 4K. We have a Blu-Ray player, also LG, and our neighbour has loaned us some Blu-Ray DVD's.

It’s frustrating but unexpected things happen (maybe COVID!).

My daughter is a care/support worker, remember they get minimum wages for sometimes very long hours and most have families they like to spend time with !!
I suspect it's the same in most areas, down here there is a shortage of people wanting to do the job so cover can be difficult
at times.
My daughter loves her job and the people she cares for but it can be long and often anti social hours, weekend cover will often depend on people who have been working long hours all week giving up time they would be spending with their families to go to a theatre show they may not even be interested in

My wife is a care worker, she works in a home for people with dementia. It's a hard 12.5 hr shift 3 or 4 times a week for minimum wage. They want to promote her, but that now means she has to do a minimum of 6 hours training/learning a week (unpaid). She leaves home at 7am, and gets in about 8.30 pm Some nights she breaks down in tears, especially if they've lost one of the residents.

People do this job because they care, they don't do it for any other reason. Sometimes they get a few days off in a row to be with their family, if they didn't, they wouldn't do the job, and we really would be in the *hit.

My mother is in a nursing home and the staff are superb, but the home and others in the group are owned/run by a charity, staff are paid over national minimum wage and greatly appreciated-not a job I could do- wages seem to be dependent on the employer, some are better than others unfortunately.
