TP Meet - York - 13th January 2007

York Minster & Undercroft usually £7.00 Free
York Dungeon usually £10.95 Free
York Castle Museum usually £6.50 Free
Yorkshire Museum usually £5.50 Free
Guidebook with map usually £4.99 Free

Apparently photography is allowed in the minster if you pay a £2 photo permit.

Which is fine by me.

Not a lot to photo in the yorvik but you get to go on a ride :D

The dungeons could be a laugh.

Those two things are more for things to do on a rainy day if we're stuck.

The only two things I'd really be interested in going to are the Minster and the Train Museum so I think I'll be willing to fork out the £9 to shoot in the Minster (but I'll have to talk to hubby!) Other than that nothing else really tickles me fancy for photography anyway.

Ah ok. I was worried we were going on a family trip for a minute ;) I'm sure some people may want to visit museums and such but ideally I'd love to spend the day photographing. I'm hoping the rain is light if it does rain. I don't mind shooting in that and it could create a nice texture on the roads in the Shambles.

"Photography including camcorders, for personal use, is free." from http://www.yorkminster.org/visiting/what-to-see-and-do/entrance-prices/

Yeah I am feeling the same as Renee, Train and Minster would be my main 2 ports of call, not much fussed about visiting castle or dungeon. If its raining I recon I could easily spend the whole day in these 2 locations. But as said earlier I guess we can split into groups of people who want to go to certain places :)

I'm actually rather looking forward to taking pics in the rail museum if I remember correctly there is a HUGE warehouse with tons of trains and decent light coming in through windows. I've already got a couple of shots in my head that I'd like to do with the new fifty.

We're going to have to split up into groups anyway - going to be more than 15 of us there.

York braced for more floods

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/north_yorkshire/6254541.stm

weeeeeeee

York braced as Ouse levels peak

No stranger to floods - York is once again braced
Sandbags have been stacked across streets in York because of fears the River Ouse could rise to just one metre below the flood levels of 2000.
Flood plains around the city are under several feet of water. St George's car park, Skeldergate and part of the A19 at Fulford have been closed.

Roads in the outlying villages of Naburn and Poppelton have also been shut because of rising water levels.

The river is expected to peak today and more heavy rain is predicted.

Environment Agency flood warnings are also in place for the River Nidd at Hunsingore and Cattal.

The River Swale is in spate at Catterick Bridge, Kirby Wiske and Topcliffe Mill, while the River Ure poses a threat at Masham, Ure Bank in Ripon, Aldwark Bridge and Roecliffe Caravan Park.

I'm womdering with all this in the 'pipeline' (more to the point, out of it) there's a lot of point in us driving for three hours (and 3 hours back) to be cut off and bashing around with loads of other visitors and Saturday shoppers! :(

Maybe, I'm being like a 'wet weekend' ....... :(

Can I wish you all a great Day out, Love to be there but just impossible for me, so I'll just look forward to see all your pics ...well the best ones !!!!

Its definately something to take into consideration Barry.

It might not be worth the trip :/

The floods are looking a bit like they might spoil the party.

Me and Sue are at her mum and dads which is 10 mins from York anyway, so we'll be there.

Well I'm going if for no other thing than the rail museum unless it is flooded too of course!

I don't think you will be cut off Barry. Its only the bits that are suppose to flood that are flooded at the moment. It hasnt rained for a while now up here in Skipton (which aint that close, but seems to have fairly similar weather) and the water does go down as fast as it comes up. I don't think you will have any problems getting into York.....as for the shoppers, hopefully a lot of them will be put off by the weather and there won't be that many to bump into (It also seems to be a quiet time of the year for tourists)

I've already got my tickets booked and afaik I can't cancel. Anyways, I imagine the Minister, Shambles, and the Train Museum should be accessible. It should still be a great chance to document the floods.

Ok - just looked at them pics Pete posted....maybe its not just the areas that were suppose to flood :o

Well, Ive been keeping me head down on this thread, hoping I would be able to make it to the meet, especially as its only just over an hour down the road. However, having picked up a bit of pneumonia last weekend and the fact that me ticker isn't quite right yet, I think I'll have to give it a miss :(

Do have a fun day out pep's and I hope the weather and floods are kind to you all. Look forward to seeing the posted results :)

I didn't think towns/city centres were designed to be flooded. We may be going just have to see how things pan out!

Going out to see the floods in St. Ives (Cambs, not the one with the beach!) :suspect:

Hmmmmm... flood! :(

Just posting from my dads house, theres just been a 5 minute report from York on look north about the floods and its looking bloody wet.

Don't know if its going to affect us or not, depends how close to the river we get I guess.

Matt

Made a little map that shows the main places we seem to be talking about, and where it seems to flood (going by some flood map I found, though it does just follow the river!)

Okay, arrived at Sue's parents just outside of York, her dad has said that there are parts of York that are cut off and the railway museum has been cut off in the past - no idea if it is or not at the moment or will be tomorrow but the roads themselves to the place can and have flooded before.

Just a warning :/

Looking at Jimmy's map we might be able to get to the railway museum and thats about it from the train station.

There are photos from a bridge so I'm guessing the water isn't *that* high. Anyone got a chopper? ;)

LoL, this is going to be fun :D

One point - we are meeting at the train station at 10am yes? but the station is pretty big. I was thinking outside the front doors, but where about in the station was everyone else thinking? :p I know a group of us shouldnt be hard to spot, but it might be hard to get a group size group if we cant find each other.

I would imagine you'll still be able to cross the bridges, so you can get from the train station to central York. I think it has to be exceptionally high to close the bridges (never seen them close the bridges myself).
If you're going by car...park on high ground (I'm not joking, I've seen cars cut off in the carpark located where the Foss and Ouse rivers meet !)

Whacky thought. The trains don't get flooded do they? I'm not going to be stuck in York train station for the next week?

Its always possible the water could rise to the track and they'd have to close the track yeah.

Me, nuffink & brassneck won't be getting there until 11.30 ish so don't hang around for us, we'll catch up with you later on.

Hmmmm should be ok getting from railway museum into the minster, depends which way you go thats all, at the end of the day we can always take pictures of something, lets hope it stays mainly dry for us thats about all I am bothered about, will find away around york and something to take pics of, should be good.
