The TP Weight Loss thread 2008

Right then, a more accurate figure now I hope.

Start Weight : 23.1st (146.8KG)
Current Weight : 22.9st (145.6kg)

Current Weight Loss : 00st 2lb (1.3kg)
Time Taken : 9 days

This means I have one less WW point a day now ;)

Matt, how have you worked your weight out? looking at the stones/pounds, it looks like you have lost 6lbs as there are 14 pounds to a stone, yet looking at the KG, you have lost 1.2 kg. I'm confused  But.. well done anyway!

1.3Kg = 2.8660094073 pounds apparently.

I'm getting weighed in KG and converting it to stones, so 23.1 stones isn't actually 23 stones and 1 pound when I'm listing it. I'm not 22st and 9 pounds I'm 22.9stones........... I think that makes sense.

Right Sue's found me a better conversion website that gives me a value in stones and pounds so I'll use that in future and I've altered my earlier posts :)

Don't worry Cheryl, it confused me as much as it did you ;)

Edited my weight as well as I weighed myself in kilograms this morning and couldnt swap scales over and converted it wrong, but still pleased with my weight loss.

Ahhh.. sorry, I thought it was 22st 9lb. I thought you were cheating yourself out of some extra weight loss for a minute.

Okay, a quick update.
I decided i didnt want to go it alone (apart from the people on here), so me and the better half joined WW.
I got weighed on Thursday night.
START WEIGHT 22st 1lb
I will get weighed again on Thursday so will check in again then.
The support given and received on here is fantastic.
Dean:)

im in been trying for ages as my name suggests lilfatman im only 5ft 5inch and weigh 12st7lb so good luck to all of us

I will 2nd that too

starting weight 12st7lb

Thats my target weight, 1st 7lb left to go (but I have a weigh in tomorrow!)

Even if I don't achieve my target weight I am pleased with how I feel since I started going to the gym. Although I have always kept myself fit my daily 40 minute workouts followed by swim, jacuzzi, steam-room, then relaxation in the lounge has given me a feeling I find hard to describe, fresher, fitter, more alive.:)

Congratulations Sue, thats a great start!
Dave and the others too :)

Seems everyone is really doing well!

I weighed myself yesterday morning and was down to 20st 2 1/4, but Im waiting for a few days before I weigh again, so sticking with 20/04 at the moment as per the other day.

I went a bit naughty and had a bar of chocolate while watching a film last night (a big bar :$), and some custard cremes.

Today, in York I naughtily had a footlong Sub from Subway too.
In hindsight I should have just had a 6 inch and made it a healthy one, but I didn't.
And tonight I had a burger from Burger King for tea. I was out...it was a minor setback, and I know where I went wrong...I had money and went near fast food....thats where I stumbled.

Just snacked on some custard cremes and a roast chicken dinner my wife made me for tea (reheated when I got in), so thats three meals today (I dont eat breakfast anyway).
So well over my calorie quota, but I have to suck it up, accept I stumbled and get back on the horse.

We have no more unhealthy food in the house, so its back on track as of now :)

A serious congratulations to everyone for joining in. I know how hard it can be to share your weight with other people, in some cases, complete strangers, but many of you have bitten the bullet and done it (Some haven't but that's ok too!).

I have a big self image problem, so I know how hard it is/can be.

So a bit  from me for everyone making a consciencous effort to get healthy and fitter.

Just remember, it's not just about the weight, it's about being healthier and fitter too!
You can be overweight but healthy and fit you know! :)

I think one of the most important things to remember is DO NOT REWARD YOURSELF WITH FOOD!!!! You don't say well I've been clean and sober for 14 days I'm going to reward myself with a glass of wine! That would be foolish and so it is for food. The unfortunate thing is that we can't go off food completely. I think processed food and sugar just needs to leave my diet 100% because I can't just have one, because I'm a junkie. Maybe in a year or so when I have this think kicked I can have a candy bar but right now it just leads to 2 candy bars.

I have found healthy things I love. Dried mango being one of them. It isn't something you can eat allot of because it does have a fair bit of sugar (naturally) but as a candy replacement it works.

I do have another issue though. I live in central New York. During the winter the price of fresh fruit and veg go through the roof. Grapes are over $4 a lb a pear is at $2 a pound. This is almost twice what it is during summer. So while I would love to be eating tons of fresh stuff monetarily it just isn't viable. Besides moving (which I would love to be an option but isn't) what do you guys suggest?

BTW great job Sue and Matt and everyone else for there great week. I'll weigh in tomorrow morning (my time).

Start Weight : 19st 10lbs; BF = 42.3%; Water = 36.3%; Muscle 22.8%
Current Weight : 19st 8lbs; BF = 42%; Water = 36.5%; Muscle 22.9%

Current Weight Loss : 00st 2lb
Time Taken : 7 days

I'm aware that those percentages add up to 101.4 but thats the info my scales give me so I'm writing it down anyway :)

In case you can't guess, BF = Body Fat

Just a quick note from me on my perspective of the whole getting rid of chocolate and things.

I think its fine to have the stuff in the house as long as you can teach yourself to include them as part of your diet. It seems really easy with Weight Watchers because all the calories and saturated fat values get converted into points and you have a certain total that you have to stick to per day. This is based on your sex, age, weight, activities at work during the day and whether you want to lose weight or stick to the weight you have.

Because I'm male and am a bit heavier than sue it gives me more than 10 points more than she gets. If we're eating similar meals like on a weekend - like yesterday and saturday then I end up with a surplus of points. Now to stop your body going into starvation mode or for whatever reason (maybe losing too much too quickly) WW say that you have to use all but 4 of your points - the max you can carry over to save for a treat later in the week is 4.

Last night I had a Twix Xtra (kingsize twix) they are 8.5 points each (thats rather high) and I've still carried over 2 points.

I think the problem with "diets" for me anyway is that you cut out chocolate and crisps and things and by the end of a few weeks all you want is chocolate or crisps and you have a binge and the diet is gone. Doing it this way means I'm snacking sensibly as part of my calorie intake for the day anyway and I'm not denying myself anything.

I've got a rather large liking for lions sweets - midget gems and sports mixture etc. I got bought a 3KG box of sports mixture for Xmas, I've weighed this out into 100g bagsand put them all back in the box. Each bag is worth 5 ww points. Now I know that if I want to chew on them whilst I'm watching a film as long as I build that 5 points into my allowed 37 for the day then I'm fine.

If you stick to a calorie controller diet and set a realistic figure for your weight/height/age/sex/amount to loose then it is just like a shopping budget. You have your limit and remove what you need for drinks then you just have to fit your food into the rest. If you want a mars bar then you have to cut down on the rest of your food just like going shopping. It is like the WW plan but far more flexible as you are working to exact figures. I have made a number of different home made soups which, having cut out the butter, work out at 125-150 Kcals for bowl. They are quite filling too and fit nicely into the plan. If I want 25% more then I can add that and my total is still accurate. Also almost everything you buy now has a calorie figure on it and it costs nothing.

Another thing to remember is that when you eat it takes 20 mins for your body to decide that you have had enough. This is why sometimes you eat and suddenly feel you have had far too much. If you had stopped eating earlier, then let 20 mins pass you would feel like you had eaten just enough. So try eating a smaller portion and wait 20 mins, you can always eat the rest then.

Anyway it weigh day 2

Start weight 14st 6lb
Last week (week 1) 14st 0lb
This week (week 2) 13st 11lb (-9lb in total, -3lb this week)

My target was to loose 2 stones so I have 19lb left to loose.

My scales monitor fat and water %ages, so wil start to record them too! water 46%, fat 34% which only leaves 20% for everything else?

I'm still going to say that chocolate is not the healthy choice! Is this about losing weight or being healthy because there is a difference. A half a cup of nuts, a bit of trail mix or an avacado salad would give you those 8.5 pts and be the healthy alternative. Be realistic crisps and candy are what got you (and me) into this mess. I also don't think you should completely kick out the "bad" but it should not be every day and it should NOT be a reward. A reward for losing weight just shouldn't be what you are trying to get over. It doesn't make sense. You need to come up with new healthy ways to reward yourself. Be it a bath, 25 quiet minutes reading a book or playing your WII (I love mine).

Anyway. my first weigh in.

Starting Weights: 218 Lbs or 15st 8lb
Current Weight: 214 lbs or 15st 4 lbs

Total Weight lost this week: 04 lbs
Total Weight Lost: 04 lbs

I'm not thrilled with that because I know I could have done better on the food but I am happy that I upped my work outs this week and stuck with it.

Renee congratulations on your 4lb loss - thats a great start :) You should be more than happy with it - your workouts are improving your fitness levels but also building muscle mass which will make it seem sometimes that you're not losing as much as you should even though you're effectively converting the fat to muscle.

Eating three+ bags of crisps and 3+ bars of chocolate a day got me into this mess, along with all of the pizza, burgers, junk food. Eating one bar of chocolate as long as I factor it into the calories and make sure I get my 5 a day of fruit and veg etc. You have to remember that when you get 1 point per stone of your current weight that my point allowance (if you were doing WW) is 8 more than yours. I could eat the same food as you but still have enough points left over to have some chocolate.

As I lose weight I'll have less points and eventually I won't be able to have a chocolate bar every day unless I make sacrifices during the week and save up points so I can use them on said chocolate bar whenever.

You're right about using them as a reward though, thats a bad idea - unless you have the points available.

You've got to remember that your body is burning calories all of the time. I can't remember the figure but if you just slept and then layed on the couch all day you'd still burn this core amount of calories with just your heart beating and your lungs breathing.

I don't like nuts or avacado otherwise I'd eat some of them. The moment you start making foods forbidden is when you want them the most though.

One of the problems I have with weight watchers is that it doesn't talk about the distribution of calories. I use Biggest Loser online which works for me because it tells you not only how many calories but where they should come from. I aim for so many fat grams a day so many carbs a day and so on. This keeps your diet not only on the right calories but balanced as well. Please don't get me wrong it is excellent that you are staying within your points but I do worry that when people continue (and I mean on a daily basis) to eat the high sugar processed foods then it really isn't about change it is about the quick fix. I absolutely agree that you should never make a food forbiden! But there is a huge difference between having it as an occasional (monthly) snack and eating them every day.

I would say if you are consistently having 8 point at the end of the day then you need to either up your portions or eat more throughout the day. I've found when I don't eat at least 2/3 of my calories up to and including mid day snack I binge on processed foods and sugars because my body is desperate for any calories and those are the quickest.

I only really had those points left over because I overslept at the weekend, not getting up till 11:30 meant that I'd lost my breakfast points and thing.

This morning I had 2 weetabix with some milk, an alpen bar and a rice crispie square thingy over the morning (roughly every 2 hours when I felt a bit peckish) for a total score of 7 points before lunch, so you could argue that most of my spare points came from skipping the morning.

I understand its a lifestyle change and thats what I'm doing, I'm also not taking into account exercise, I'm doing it and not using any additional points from it.

Hi everyone...

Well yet again I come into work at 10am and its someone elses birthday... more choc and cakes .. but they have also bought fruit too.. bless them - they know how to look after their manager!

muscle I presume?

edit, sorry i didn't notice the extra page there so just hit reply to ladybirds post

Never looked into the type of scales you are using ladybird so can anyone explain how standing on a set of scales can work all that out, do you input your height and the rest is worked out from that

on mine you put age, height, job type and exercise levels and when you stand on the sensors it tells you all of the above info.

Yeah, you enter your age, height, either male / female, and roughly how fit you are on a scale of 1 - 3, and it works it out for you sending small electric (I presume) pulses from your feet! all seems rather clever!

Good If you're exercising as well coz your weight might not change much as you turn fat to muscle.

You can get them fairly cheaply now, think mine were about £20.

Start Weight: 14st 8lb
Current Weight: 14st 0lb
Target Weight: 12st 0lb

Current Weight Loss:
00st 8lb
Time Taken: 12 days

Happy enough with that :)

Don't know how I've managed this, but I've gained a pound since the other day when I "joined"! Fed up now.

I knew I wouldn't be getting down to serious dieting until Sunday as I had pre-arranged commitments involving curry etc., but I've cut out all the xmas choccies (given the leftovers away) and stopped going for a coffee (because a coffee is accompanied by a compulsory muffin), so I thought I would at least have stayed the same.

I meant to have my weigh-in on sundays but I forgot until this morning and today I weight 9st 10lb which is pants.

Anyhow, yesterday was the first day I actually counted calories and I ate only really healthy stuff and drank only two litres of water and one cup of peppermint tea, so maybe this week will see some kind of improvement.

I even left camera club early last night before they opened the jammie dodgers!

Well done all you lot who are doing so well!!! Hope to be catching up a bit soon......

So, here's my weekly update...

Start weight: 12st 3lb
Current weight: 11st 12lb

Weight loss so far: 5lb

Time taken: 7 days

I am quite pleased with that! At least its an encouragement that the healthy eating and exercise is doing something :)

Don't be fed up!

It can take a couple of weeks before you start seeing a real difference, water levels fluctuate daily so don't get disheartened! I've not had the best week, so its try harder for me!!!! :)

I would love to get to your weight! You are now my incentive!!!!! :D :D :D

Don't be fed up! You have to make a start, which you have done and if you plot time against weight whilst on a diet it will be like a saw blade. Every time you eat you put on the weight of what you have eaten. 1KG of salad, yes 1 Kg in weight. 1KG of chocolate cake another 1KG added. What makes the salad better is that you expel MOST of it undigested. Now we eat 3-4 times a day and expel uneaten stuff less frequently. Also (and this is especially important for women) our body weights naturally fluctuate though the day and with women through your cycle. If you weighed yourself last week at your naturally lightest time of the month then this week could be your naturally heaviest point. If this difference is 3lb as it can be then you could have actually lost 2lb and your body will be telling you that you have gained 1lb. This is mainly due to retained liquids. What will happen if this is true is that in a couple of weeks when you hit the naturally lightest point again it will appear that miraculously you have suddenly lost 5lb in one week!

The basic thing is eat less calories than you burn and you loose weight. The bigger the difference the bigger the loss. It does however take time. All the diets that people are using are based on this simple premise. I have started making home made veg soups. They are VERY low in calories and taste fantastic. Now I could design a diet called the Cowasaki diet where you replace lunch with one bowl of soup and eat a smaller dinner but effectively what is happening is that you are cutting back on calories.

Just stick with it and your weight will come off, there is no such thing as a calorie controlled diet that does not work (and that goes for things like weight watchers etc which are basically the same thing). Weight watchers works out a number of points based on height, sex, current weight, amount to loose etc but effectively each point is just a number of calories. It is done like this to make it easier to calculate rather than adding up every part of a salad or whatever. You can do the same with a calorie controlled diet and vary the maximum per day as you loose weight or do more exercise.

Well done to everyone who has been going at this since new year and everyone who has joined since. This is the type of thing which makes dieting work - a network of people talking over the problems and supporting each other. Most diets fail due to lack of this network!

Anyway I had to dig out a belt yesterday because my jeans kept falling too low and its only day 1 of week three!!!

I dont feel like I am loosing any at all :-( feel bloated.

I dont feel like I am loosing any at all :-( feel bloated.

If you have changed your food types and you are eating more salad and veg then your weight might not go down until your body adjusts and you start to expel the undigested bits! See what I said above. If you eat 1Kg of celery it will add a Kg to your weight! Once your body has removed the water, maybe 500g you will still be 500g heavier UNTIL your body gets rid of the rest! Celery although it contains calories can be considered as a zero because you gain so little nutritional benefit from it that your body uses more energy trying to digest it than it gains!

Don't worry the bloatedness will go and your weight will come down, maybe try some more fruit. The fructose is a natural laxative!

Like cowasaki said, your weight can and does go up and down throughout the day...i naughtily weighed myself a couple of days ago in the evening, before my one week was up and was disappointed that id only lost a pound it seemed but then after weighing myself this morning before uni i had lost more. Dont let it discourage you... :)
