any country could attack us or our interests over seas if theres no deterent not to do so
Like it deterred Argentina?
We need to be spending more on the military both nuclear and non nuclear to keep aggressors like this at bay.
Nope- they were asked for a super carrier and airwing but said no because they were too worried about the hispanic vote (with a full blown US carrier on our side the war would have been very short and one sided) and while we had the AIM9L we purchased those on the open arms market principally from diehl bgt defence who were building them under licence - so in essence they gave us jacks*** (not that they were required to as the NATO treaty doesnt apply in the south atlantic - the clue is in the name)
Or just abandon the Falkland Islands and give them back to their rightful owner. Much cheaper.
Steve.

nope but they might attack us with conventional arms - they might also use chemical or biological weapons against british forces in theatres of war over seas as there'd be no deterent not to. And its not limited to other countries with nukes - any country could attack us or our interests over seas if theres no deterent not to do so
i agree.. but they dont not do that in case we nuke them and wipe out there whole country ..... stop and have a think there fella![]()
NHS is a wonderful thing.... sort the middle management out and get it working. Marvellous thing.
Thing is UKIP would get my vote.
Thats exactly what they were discussing on Jeremy Vine's lunch time show on R2....... but what it does seem to be is a partythat want to prevent the influx of people who wish to come to this country as unskilled immigrants or those who wish to avail of our generous benefits system or NHS.......
.... it makes them a proactive party who wish to return this country into a nation that produce an economy envious of all others rather than making it a cash cow for the masses to freely come and go and bleed the NHS and the Benefits system....... ........
When did that happen? or did you miss out "the"bloody pink buses to get womentovote -
R2.... Interesting
Its better than just about all the rest of the crap that gets aired on the radio these daysdoes not compute.
Did they bankrupt the rest of the world too. This LSE Report seemed to think that for the best part the Labours years in power were an economic success. BTW Boom and Bust was Browns slogan and I'm assuming the misspelt name for Blair wasn't a typo. Very droll, never heard that one before. My thoughts on this election.
Labour - Virtually bankrupted us 5 years ago. Tony Bliar said "No more boom and bust" then watched house prices rise double in 18 months, way beyond the means of the common man. What use is the minimum wage when the average house prices are 14 times the minimum wage income.
.
The Labour party are the Tory party of the 50/60s, before Maggie and Keith Joseph got their hands on it, the Tories are currently swinging so far right they'll probably never gain a majority again. Suits me. UKIP will not hold the balance of power come the next election, they'll be lucky to have any MP's although Nige might have a shout. Its better than just about all the rest of the crap that gets aired on the radio these days![]()
The discussion you quoted was about radio 2 not politics,The Labour party are the Tory party of the 50/60s, before Maggie and Keith Joseph got their hands on it, the Tories are currently swinging so far right they'll probably never gain a majority again. PMSL at the analogyThey might get a few (small few), but they'll still be "the token black kid" in Westminster.

Of course, anyone planning to make the (gargantuan) UKIP will not hold the balance of power come the next election, they'll be lucky to have any MP's although Nige might have a shout.
I was having this discussion with someone the other day,They'll do well. Hopefully.

Only 3 islanders voted against the Falklands staying British
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-21750909
A very good friend of mine was, as an 18 year old rating, on a ship that got torpedoed in the Falklands and he saw many deaths on both sides. He served over 31 years in the Navy to protect our country in various confrontational situations all over the world. I know what he'd do if you quoted such a glib and crass comment in front of him. It would not be pleasant.

Was he aware of anybody actually calling for a no? "I did speak to one person and they were saying they were going to vote no," he says, "more for a reason of independence." This is exciting news. Could he ask that person if they would talk to me about it? He could, but he isn't optimistic. "I'm pretty sure that they won't broadcast it," he says. And yes, moments later Short calls back to confirm that the person did indeed vote no, but will not talk – not even anonymously. "Down here it would destroy their reputation," he says

No UK ships were torpedoed in the Falklands war though
EDIT: Nick is ahead of me
Regardless, I detest comments disrespecting our forces who have put their lives on the line for our Sovereignty.[/QUOTE
I'm totally with you on that one.
Plenty of UK ships sustained damage from Argentine fire.....even if not torpedoed.
Russia are not going to attack the UK with nuclear or conventional weapons, North Korea don't have nukes or a method of delivery to the UK and Iran has nothing either. There is nothing to deter. What about all the other countries that don't have nukes? Japan doesn't have them neither does Belgium, Germany, Italy, Turkey, Greece, Canada, etc etc The only two NATO member states with nukes is the US and the UK.
Right, I've just texted him to find out. I got it into my head his ship was torpedoed but that's maybe just my recollection of the account he gave. It was certainly hit by some type of Argie fire. I'll get back when he replies.

He was on the HMS Glasgow. Hit by a 500lb bomb, which passed through the hull. He was on a gun placement on the deck and watched it come down. Fair to say he shat himself but still stayed in the Navy for another quarter of a century. Damn hero if you ask me, him and all our boys involved.
He had a very lucky escape, they could have totally destroyed the ship and there would have been even more deaths. It was lucky nobody was killed on that occasion. The bombs failed to detonate because the fuses were incorrectly set.
Sadly so many Falklands Veterans didn't stay on in the Royal Navy and Merchant Navy too, many went on to develop PTSD and quite a few committed suicide. For some people the war continues every day.
I've plenty of respect for our armed forces and the role they play throughout the world to protect our interest and my son did two tours of Afghanistan but I still believe the Falklands should be an independent state, those who wish to remain British are welcome to come and live here.Right, I've just texted him to find out.
