Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

Do you really need two E-M1s? Get the E-M5 as a second camera - you’ll be delighted with it.
I know I don’t really. But I might lose a bit selling it on, so may be easiest to keep it. I won’t make any quick decisions on it

.... The big advantage, and it's a very real practical advantage in my opinion, of having two identical bodies is that they each have exactly the same setting options and you can copy and exactly match your customised settings across the bodies via OM Workspace. Consequently it doesn't matter which you grab and it's far quicker than changing lenses and losing the shot.

Think of a camera body as just being a control module for all your lenses because that's all a camera body is.

I say this from the experience of having 3 different bodies when I shot Canon and 2 Olympus M1X bodies when I changed brand. Currently I only have 1 OM-1 and an Olympus TG-6 in my pocket and I tend to go out on particular missions which only need 1 lens.

^ a :ROFLMAO: from someone who keeps a FF Nikon and an OM-1 system, often shoots with both, and has reasonable muscle memory - but I still get things wrong and wonder why a button hasn't worked like I expected.

I like the thought of the body as being subservient to the lens - good imagery there.

Me too! FF Canon and Oly EM1iii and OM1 at the moment. I hadn’t used the Canon in a while and thought it was broken - couldn’t change the aperture when in manual mode… it was of course user error and I have now changed the dials so they’re almost the same.

Uhs-i or uhs-ii card?
It was the more expensive one that has the exposed contacts on the back. Is that uhs-ii? The problem was a physical one with the bit of plastic that slides across - every time I inserted it into the camera, it would slide across and stop it being written to, Lexar were great and replaced it.

True, but would the interchange of settings work between a Mk2 and a Mk3, as I thought the OP was referring to?

.... An interchange of settings would only work if the Mk2 and Mk3 were running exactly the same Firmware version. Having never even handled either I don't know anything about their Firmwares.

I am sure they are different versions, my mk2 is v3.2 and I think the highest for the mk3 is 1.5

The version of the firmware is possibly less relevant than it being the same firmware which is very unlikely between essentially two different cameras.

.... I found that when I had two E-M1X the versions of the Firmware needed to match before settings could be saved in OM Workspace and copied across.

I was passing Swindon on my way home today so I dropped in to T4 to see what was on offer. As well as a mint OM-1 and E-M1X they also had an MC-14 and MC-20. The MC-20 was a very attractive £229 so I bought it. While the transaction was going through, it transpired that someone had mis-printed the label and it should have been £299. Fair play to T4, they honoured the label and I got a bargain.

Once home, I squeezed the 16mm Kenko tube onto the front of the MC-20 and the 60mm onto the tube then put the assembly on the nearest Oly body, flicked the 1:1 switch and had a look. Oh my, how wobbly is that! Not something I could use off a tripod but the frame was filled with some text 8mm across! So it gives 2:1 as I thought it should and I just need to find a use for it.....

Yes, but that's with identical cameras. With different cameras and therefore different firmware, it won't matter.

For me it's the physical differences in the cameras that can catch me out. For instance the EM1ii doesn't have the little joystick to move the focus point around.
.... Me too (referring to my Canon days). It's called 'Muscle Memory' and it's unconscious.

Muscle memory? I have memories of when I had muscles :p

Thanks . Yes thats the uhs-ii card. Thats good to know that lexar are fully working as well . Olympus werent interested with my info trying to inform them about pny but at least i can warn in here.

.... I'm in no rush to update my OM-1 Firmware either. But it may include Feature improvements / refinements and not only any bug fixes.

As my OM1 is new, I thought I’d see how workspace operates, and do the update to 1.4 - very straightforward, without any problems.
I’ve not used the camera since the update, but will do so today (hopefully) - will report back later.

.... The Workspace (OM-W) interface has definitely improved since OMDS have taken up the baton. I never used to use it apart from for Firmware updates and saving settings but now, in 2023, I find it excellent for *culling previews, colour coding and retitling them as needed. It also offers you a useful amount of information about each image's camera settings, more so than any of the RAW editing apps. Info such as how many frames in each burst and where your focus point was placed etc.

*I used to use FastRawViewer FRV to preview and cull but OM-W is far more satisfying in every respect IMO.

However, I don't convert my RAW files in it and so Edit > Move (important if avoiding OM-W conversion) from my external HD to a hierarchy of folders on my Mac for subsequent RAW editing in ON1 2023 (am no longer using Capture One).

Workspace may in fact be better at RAW conversion than I think it is but it is much more efficient for me to do everything, including noise reduction, in ON1.

But, although I haven't tried it yet, OM-W supports HiRes RAW files and can merge Focus Bracketed files (I am told).

Methinks you will not be disappointed by your new OM-1 and, in time, quite the contrary! I don't care what some people say or think about OM Systems, they really are stepping up a few gears and continuing the Olympus tradition of innovation.

:olympus: :D

just had a look at it and TBH its left me totally perplexed . cant figure out what i'm doing or how . at the risk of my sanity I'll keep using LR for the foreseeable future .. unless they publish a idiots guide to usage .
it to all intents and purposes looks good and typically olympus complex .but the old adage stands good about teaching a old dog new tricks

A while ago I posted my replacement grip set for the E-M1ii for sale. There was little interest, so now, as I'm having a clear-out, I've put it into the Freebies section of Classifieds.

.... Open OM Workspace > Help (in top menu) > OM Workspace Help > Instruction Manual PDF

The rest is just you becoming familiar with it by using it. Everything has a learning curve as you know.

There might also be some third-party videos online but I haven't searched.

Will look in a bit ,

As per my post earlier, I’ve now used my OM1 since the update to firmware version 1.4 - no problems whatsoever and custom settings OK.

Update on the uhs-ii front. I got my sandisk 128gb uhs-ii card today . Tested out the near same situations that bricked 2 x PNY uhs-ii cards and the sandisk was totally fine . So my advice would be avoid pny uhs-ii cards even though they are now half the price of a sandisk.

.... Buy cheap, buy twice, or even thrice! And I expect that Sandisk are half the price of Sony TOUGH cards :ROFLMAO: Although I haven't checked Sandisk prices. Peace of mind comes at a cost.

Expensive camera expensive cards has always worked for me...

Just opened my e-m1 mk3 from WEX and once again it’s a great piece of 2nd hand kit from them. Just a small amount of marking on the lens mount as expected. Half the accessories in the box have not even been opened.
Just need to source a couple of faster sd cards now

Does anyone have experience with the 40-150 F2.8 lens with the 1.4 convertor? Does it focus quickly and perform well? Sorry for asking but trying to prepare and justify to myself!
TIA

.... Yes, I do - On both an E-M1X and now an OM-1 and also with the MC-20. The 40-150mm F/2.8 PRO achieves great results with either teleconverter in my opinion.
There are plenty of examples on my Flickr pages, mostly shooting wildlife including close-ups of mini-beasts. It was my first lens when I moved to Olympus from Canon D-SLR in Autumn 2019.

It is a very flexible lens and highly rated, and not just by myself. It is very weatherproof too. So I have no hesitation in recommending it.

EDIT :
The only downside is that the clever sliding lenshood has been to known come apart if knocked and spill all its small ballbearings! I now use a thirdparty Fotodiox C-ET-78 II lenshood which is reversible on the lens barrel for storage.

Thanks Robin, I am sure that my wife and bank account are less grateful!!
