weekly Michael23's 2012 52 COMPLETED! WooHoo! Slide show added

Right got caught in a thunderstorm today at the east midlands designer outlet, shame I only had the compact with me. So I decided to click away with plenty of liquid coming down from the sky!

I can't make my mind up, so going to post these and decide during the week after seeing what the comments I get from these.

Week 35 Liquid 4 by scilly puffin, on Flickr

Hi Michael, quick off the mark today! I ran out in the rain as well, not checked them yet though.

1 is a little dull for me, sorry the litter bin alone dies t do it for me!

2 is so clear, I love the reflection but I think it's a little to clear, a few ripples would add a little extra interest for me.

3 is my favourite shot of the set. Everything fits really well and the Union Jack umbrella really ties it all up nicely, well caught.

4 is really good, but a bit of a cheat ;)

The first one for me, definitely all about liquid, and the title makes it complete.
I also like the reflection shot but it looks to be a bit slanted to my eyes.

Cheers!

#3 is the stand out image of the set for me Michael.
It has great depth to it, leading the viewers eye in and through the scene.
Lovely subtle colour tones to it, with the union flag umbrella really making the scene.
For me it tells a story of the day, typical UK weather. Good work

Thanks Marsha, the rain was crazy and I couldn't pass it up, the new compact has coped well. Some ripples would have been nice in that reflection, nobody didn't seem to want to venture out from under cover  I really like number 3 and 4/

Thanks Bob, you are right about the reflection shot, not noticed until I read your comment, will give it a straighten at some point

Thanks very much Iain, I decided to desaturate a little, I saw the umbrella and seized the moment.

So far 2 for #3 and 1 for #1

All say liquid to me I don't think a photo taken a couple of days ago is a cheat although its a bit dark to say that its liquid. Number 1 could do with a bit of a crop from the left hand side not sure which ones best though

Body - I like 1 over 2 as well. Fab idea, definitely on theme and nicely different. Shame that one of the feet is slightly clipped though.

Liquid - 2 and 4 are my favourites, though of the two I think 4 says "liquid" more clearly. (2, to me, says "reflection".) I think it the shutter needed to be quicker though - I'm not seeing anything crisp and in focus; there's focus, but motion blur. 2 is really lovely, though I keep thinking it's slightly wonky? Could be imagining it. Lovely colours and tones though.

even tho you'd be losing some of the reflection, I think #2 would look better with the bottom cropped a bit. My fave for liquid is #1  lots of water :)

Thank you Summer, will have a look at the crop possibility.

Been out this evening and having a play with my piece of welding glass, I have decided to do a re-shoot of staight, after running it through elements and doing a bit of pp, I liked it so much I thought I would use it as a re-shoot

Week 35, Re-shoot of Straight by scilly puffin, on Flickr

Hi, Michael, Liquid edit for me. Liking the composition, clarity and B&W works a treat. Just the folk upper left....wonder how long they were there...

Straight reshoot, works for me. The tracks really pop out of the dark BG. What looks like a smalish hot spot in the sky and maybe a shade off the top to focus the eye on the lines. Overall,

Cheers.

Hi michael,

liquid - just to be different #1 is my fav though with maybe a tiny bit off the top - we have seen plenty of rain like that recently!!:):)

reshoot - a great shot, using the welding glass makes it for me - that sky is great!!:):)

Ooh, now that I like a lot! Fantastic sky, wonderful silhouette, then those shiny leading lines (train tracks?). Utterly gorgeous, very dramatic.

Thank you Vicky, the railway lines do stand out nicely, always good to get something one was hoping for :)

Michael - Straight re-shoot - Great, one of those "less is more" compositions. Works for me!

Thanks Mike

Thanks Andy, didn't have much time, so had to take the pic there and then. Tried a few different crops on the straight reshoot, but stayed with this version. Pleased you liked the pics

Thanks Sarah, thanks for your comments, and pleased you like the pictures. I quite like the one with the umbrella in. Still not decided which will be the official pic yet. The welding glass shot worked very well. Has to be one of my fave images of the year.

Time, very well caught, nice bit of motion blur in the blades, and fits the theme perfectly
Body, all good, but I think the first one has to be it.
Liquid, wow, you did well with that little lot, bet you got soaked. I prefer Rubbish Weather 2, the brolly in the background really helps it.

hi Michael

Trying to catch up - you set a fierce pace for my laggardly self.

Dark - Like both although they are both a bit grey. Good technique on both - probably would go with #2, altho the top left is a bit distracting - you have explained why you left it in.

Time - very good shots which tell a tale, altho for me the theme is not that obvious

Body - excellent shots  very sharp, good colour and tone and excellent focus. Both on theme for me and would go with #2 becase comp is better and i am a little queasy about the bare belly on #1 - it looks so raw.

Liquid - good shots in the circumstances. #3 for me because I like the wider angle, the super muted colours, the movement in the rain and the people top right looking at the rain, almost in desperation.

straight re shoot -:clap:. great exposure, lines running towards the brightness in the sky, the silhouettes - good reshoot

Hi John, thanks for popping by. The shot with the brolly in is going to be my choice now, It has grown on me quite a bit. Thankfully there was a nice under cover bit so I didn't have to get wet.

Hi Alan, thank you for taking a look through the weeks. I seem to have been lucky with the themes and pictures these last few weeks. The bare belly does look a little weird doesnt it  Straight is one of my favourite pics of the year and this project.

Liquid - I do like that first one but closely followed by the reflection shot.

Reshoot Straight - Great stuff. I really like this one. There's a very dramatic feel to it.

hi Michael

Liquid.....love the reflection in the 2nd shot for Liquid....beautiful image in B&W , crystal clear....straight is better, losing the 2 onlookers would've been the icing on the cake but you may not have had control over that:)

Fabulous reshoot for Straight.....I'm viewing on a very small netbook screen so can't see the whole image but the horizonhs does seem rather central which shouldn't work but it does, for me at least. Great in mono, love the clouds, very slightly lighter patch rhs where the lines come together but thats only minor crit.....framed & large on the wall me thinks:thumbs:

Straight reshoot is very nice the sky is amazing! How long was your exposure?

Thanks Marsha :), the exposure was 30 seconds at f5.6 and iso 400

Hiya Lynne, thanks for the comments, I was very impressed with how the reflection shot worked, considering it was off a compact camera too.
The horizon is rather central on straight, but it really does work doesn't it. I managed to get the train tracks just to the left of centre which I think actually helps with the composition. The pale patch, was wondering about that, as I adjusted levels to black it out so to speak, I also lost the railway lines, so dropped it back a bit and settled for this version. Certainly is a candidate for a print.

Up We Go!

Week 36, Up! by scilly puffin, on Flickr

Managed to get to see the Red Arrows today at Chatsworth, they were doing a display for the country fair. This is the first time I have photographed anything like these on digital, plus it's a long time since I saw them display. Truly awesome flying which made me tingle like mad :)

Hope you like ;)

Hi Michael, well they are extremely photogenic if you're clever enough to catch them on camera! Mind you 600 of just these is some haul! I make it a rule now to not shoot in high bursts (except for the synchro pair which I still miss) as it makes editing a nightmare!
I like the composition of the shot, although the aircraft at the back on the left looks like it's nose is welded to the tail of the aircraft in front, poor flying if you ask me :rules: It's just a shame it's silhouetted as the red of the jets and the paint job on the underside of the aircraft has been lost. I have learnt to push the EV to at least one whole stop or further if they display (as here) with the sun behind them!

Unfortunately when they plan display lines at public events they don't take into account the position of the sun for the tog's :bonk:

With that said, it's still a nice shot and all the aircraft are in focus! Which is something I failed to achieve when they were visiting here last week!

Oh and it's very sad to see only seven aircraft. This weekend they're displaying at the Bournemouth air festival where they lost a pilot last year!

Thank you Marsha, the lighting was a real pain and they were flying straight into it! The best of it is, I have used the 1 stop exposure method when photographing planes at east midlands. I didn't even think, I was just that excited plus my daughter was jumping around and running shouting awesome! And there's your pic for up! I would have liked my position to have been better, but still very pleased with the outcome of this one. Goodness knows what I am going to do when going through them all :bonk: And yes, a big shame to see them with only 7. I found myself counting whilst getting the pictures.

Ooh arrows! I love those guys. Fantastic shot, definitely says "up"!

I've shot them a few times now and I know what you mean about the lighting, it's a nightmare. What I found was that with the dodgiest shots a bit of high-contrast B&W PP did wonders :)

Hi, Michael, second plane submission....poplar. I actually thought about a long exposure of planes taking off at Leeds and Bradford Airport but think the cloudy sky may prevent this :shake:

Now yours, composition is great and the colours on the trails, as Marsha says, just the touching planes.

Cheers.

Thanks Vicky, I will give some of that pp a go when I get the chance. Thanks for popping by

That sounds a good idea, worth a try in any case  I reckon it was my position that caused that. Look forward to photographing these again.

The Reds are really the best in the world and I always enjoy watching them. I like the composition of them flying on the diagonal but unfortunately the lack of colour in the planes brings it down a tad. BTW I came back from a few days last year at RAF Coningsby with a whole stack of images. Took ages to sort through.
