weekly Michael23's 2012 52 COMPLETED! WooHoo! Slide show added

I think the power station works better too. agree with the horizon comment

Thanks Allan, had a look at the other few that I took, they all had the horizon in more or less the same place. I had one which was a little wider, but didn't give the impact that this one has.

All good Michael, but the power station trumps the rest for me (although those statues are rather interesting). I don't think the mid horizon is a problem here as it kinda needs to be for the reflections...

The power station shot stands out above the others for both the them and impact of the shot. In this case I don't mind the horizon being in the middle of the frame. Good one.

Hi Michael, sorry for the lack of comments for a while.

Letter I like, but not keen on the SC; I think it's that rather than the actual subject that's too obvious. I'd like to see the bricks desaturated just enough to emphasise the post box.

Contrast is stunning. Nothing more to say really!

Mineral is great, especially the edit. I love the lighting you've captured, and the composition. I didn't even realise it was possible to get that close to the quarry!

I'll come back to dark once I've done mine :)

Cheers Mark. I keep meaning to have a fresh go at the pp of letter to see if I can improve on it, failing that it is a candidate for a future reshoot.
Pleased you like contrast, it worked well.
The lighting at the time was excellent at the quarry. I walked up and there were some handy spots to photograph it.

I like your last one for dark a lot Michael, its got a lot going for it. The B&W conversion works well with the subject as does the contrasty feel to it. I don't mind the central (ish) horizon, the reflections in the water pulls everything together.
Have you tried a long exposure with this subject? I think it would be quite dramatic IMHO Iain

Had a busy fe days visiting a fe places, but our trip to flamborough head on Sunday had to be one of the best. When we arrived we saw the RAF rescue helicopter fly over, managed a quick few grab shots. Went down a load of steep steps to a secluded little beech, and a little later on the helicopter was around again, and we could hear it hovering just the other side of cliffs, walked back up with a bit of excitement and trepidation at the same time to see what was happening, saw the helicopter hovering just level with the cliff tops, walked over and the winch was out, the people were all in uniform so I assume it was a training exercise. But what an opportunity it was to see these guys in action, to feel the down draft off the propellers and to watch such skill, all of this just seemed very apt for this weeks theme

Hi ya

your last image for Dark win's hands down , the 1st 2 don't do anything for me though see where you're coming from with them . Given that you're showing reflections the central horizon works perfectly for me , great detail in the smoke without any blown bits...good work mister

Time...beautiful shot of the 'copter , lovely n sharp & a different slant on the theme...the icing on the cake would've been seeing what was on the end of the winch....possibly a bit of an ask though...welll spotted & really well shot

Nice shot. As has been said it's nice and sharp. I also think you've given it just the right shutter speed to put some blur on the rotors.

brilliant pic - took me a while to connect it to time tho - then I read the pic title

Hi Michael

Contrast - Excellent Image, great detail and lighting, liking the pp work done, love the colour

Mineral - Crop works well, leads the eye through the picture nicely - great photo !!!!

Dark - No:2 for me too, great clouds and the erm.... stand out very nicely - well spotted

<EDIT> Correction, make that no:3 - love that shot

Time - Perfect timing too, great action shot, nice amount of motion in the rotars, well caught

nicely caught pic though a bit central maybe a bit of space to the right or a bit wider view or as blondie says it might have been nice to see what they were winching. nice explanation of the theme

Your final picture for dark is a winner both in context and theme. Breaking the rules with the horizon in the middle works because of the reflection.
Dark - Good idea but needs the explanation to tie in with time. Great shot. Just being picky would have liked seeing the winchman in the pic although the line out shows there's action going on. Your other shots are brilliant.

Thanks for popping in John, understand what you mean about having the winchman in, didn't think about it at the time.

I now have a piece of welding glass so I will do the power station with it at some point.

Ah the mighty Sea King, I've got a photo of his mate on my Flickr ;) It's definitely a training mission as they're winching crew up and down on the double strop (under arm and legs) It's good fun, I did it from a Wessex at RAF Valley.

It's a nice photo and you've done well to get motion on the rotors, particularly the tail rotor. I've taken hundreds of helicopter shots and only now just figuring that out:bonk: It took me a while to put it with the theme though:nuts:

I know a lot of the SAR fleet, maybe next time you go I'll ask the crews to winch Fluffy up?

A great series of photographs for this weeks theme Michael. Well put together, they tell a story. Not an obvious take but one that works nonetheless. Not got anything to crit, they are technically very good. Well done

On my phone but on theme and they look sharp with cracking colours. Little central but I suspect that you had to act quickly.

Cheers.

This weeks theme has fallen into place quite nicely again. Today we did our annual trip to the British Birdwatching Fair at Rutland Water. BTO (British Trust for ornithology) were doing there bird ringing demonstrations.

Here we have a juvenile Blackcap, which we can tell by the bare patch, showing its body off. I thought it was quite fitting for the theme and I fancied putting in something a little different.

Week 34, Body #2 by scilly puffin, on Flickr

Now, I am not sure which to use as "the picture" for the week in my final set, I like them both and edging towards number 1.

Lighting was awkward, shade on one side and blinding sun on another, it looks like I mangaed to find a decent spot. Plus it was a very popular demonstration, so was making sure I wasn't depriving anyone of views

Michael, now, I'm going to revisit these tomorrow because I've 'had a few' :D

On clicking the link on Gmail I was presented with one of the sharpest images I've seen for a while

Great tones, colours, contrast and depth. The detail in the Blackcap's eye in #1 is great. #2, I can almost hear it saying, 'OK, you've had your fun, now let me get the hell out of here!'

Now, I wasn't sure about the connection between the theme and the photographs, but if the body of the juvenile is bare for genetic/biological reasons then

#1 or #2....not easy. I'm going for #2, bit with 3/4 inch of the top and RH side.

Oh, and BTW...slow down and give the rest of us a chance ;)

number 1 for me nice sharp image number 2 not really saying body to me

all good pics but the bare belly fits the theme best I think, poor ikkle birdie

Hi ya

great set of really sharp images there Michael , the detail in both the Bird & hand are excellent .Of all of them I'm edging towards montage 2 but they're all really good

number 1 for me nice sharp image number 2 not really saying body to me

all good pics but the bare belly fits the theme best I think, poor ikkle birdie

Thanks all  I went down the montage route as I couldn't decide which one, and I still can't.

I still think your 1st shot is the one to depict body. Showing the belly etc. although the green lump in the background is perhaps the problem. All sharp images, and like the montages which I would favour the second.
