weekly Michael23's 2012 52 COMPLETED! WooHoo! Slide show added

Straight - 'why so serious' that is a serious look, the edit works but I feel it is still lacking something.

Letter - like edit #3 the best. The SC works well. Similar idea to what I have in mind when I eventually take out the camera to the location of the letter box!

Contrast - odd isnt it, I am with Lynne. Not sure I get the theme though I know the contrast is big/small. Lovely photo though, nice tones and subjects.

Hi Alex, it was one those in between laughing moments, I asked Caitlin to pose differently for me and she didn't like it! I love these moments though, the frowns and serious looks are just as good as smiles. You may well be right about it lacking something, but it was to be in keeping with the general mood about the weather at the time. As for contrast, pleased you like the picture.

I think it would have been better if you'd got the back of the small spider. I like the processing :) The theme was lost on me until I read other people's comments tho :(

Hi Michael. Forever catching up. I like the edit on straight with the face brighter.
Letter - The final version is my preference as this brings out both the colour of the box against the brickwork. Still needs a slight straighten though.
Contrast - Good work on getting the subjects, off centre composition works as does the toning.

Desperately playing catch up, so sorry it's brief!

Straight - Not obviously on theme, but with the explanation fits well. I prefer the second edit but find the text on her t-shirt and the logo on the umbrella distracting.
Letter - Very obviously on theme! I'm not sure any of the edits are quite right for me - I'd be inclined to go for bright red on the box and desaturated bricks?
Contrast - I can't look at this too long without getting a bit wiggy! I do like the shot, but again I'm not sure that it's quite on theme.

Hi John and Vicky, thanks for popping in  I might look at the processing of the letter box again if I get chance and see what I can do with it.
As for contrast, I am quite happy with this one, but may well revisit this theme on a future reshoot.

Had a great day at the National Memorial Arboretum today. If anyone is thinking of going, it is well worth it  Great to put faces to names. Whilst there I took a walk up to the quarry, with thanks to a moody and stormy sky making a great backdrop, I got this weeks photo. Only just a very minor tweak, but virtually sooc raw to jpeg

Week 31, Mineral by scilly puffin, on Flickr

Hl, Michael, bit miffed I didn't photograph the quarry. I sat in a shelter next to it as well.

It's the contrast between the sky and land that catches my eye.

Not easy to compose, I suspect.

Tad of the bottom would draw the eye to the moody sky and machinery.

Cheers.

Very good Michael, excellent moody sky, and the conveyor is an interesting looking thing. I have to agree with a minor crop off the bottom....

Does for me ;)

Hi Michael

Contrast - like the idea. Good tones. Rather like the idea of the large one on the wood and the small one on the web, because the large one does not seem to be in need of a web to catch its prey - just jump on it! A said before, pity that the small one is showing its underside.

Mineral - on theme, crop is better. Good sky and nice diagonals. Presumably a Sunday so the machinery was not working - would be a bonus to see the mineral on the conveyors.

mineral - like it, good take on the theme too :)

Good take on theme and like the pile bottom right, a good addition. Agree the crop works

oooooo Another TP meet photograph. Well done for getting over there are taken this. It fits the theme well and those clouds have nicely helped the image.

It was a great day and will certainly be going back, thanks to Mother Nature for giving me those nice clouds

A good idea for mineral Michael, we kept looking at the stone memorials thinking mineral and didn't even think about the quarry! The sky and crop hel to make this and the road takes your eyes up the picture!!:)

Thanks Sarah, this was towards the end of the meet, while my mum, dad wife and daughter popped into the cafe, I decided to keep walking round to see what else I could find, somehow made it up there with aching everything! But was well worth it :)

Hi Michael

your cropped version of Mineral works much better , love the moody sky ...well spotted mister

Good shot. There's a salt mine up the road from me, but I couldn't get to it.

you are getting quick at this.

Out of the 2 the second one for me except the bit in the top left I know its unavoidable but maybe a small crop and maybe clone whats then left of the structure out looks very interesting whatever it is

Thanks Allan, number 2 bugged me in pp. I tried a crop but then it felt unbalanced. Tried to clone it out and that didnt look right, so stuck with the one you see here. It was over the river in Lincoln city centre.

Hi, Michael, #1, I've done these myself and do like the silhouette style. You've done well with the exposure, but I'd like to see more of the stem.

#2, composition's a bit....off for me, not sure why, though. I really like the detail on the clouds, though.

Cheers.

Thanks Andy, I would have gone foe more stem on number 1, but there where far too many distractions which didn't work with this style. Number 2 is an odd one, tried all manor of crops and stuck with my original pov.

mmm I like them all but the power station is my fave because it's dark in more than one way - dark from pp and dark because industry in the countryside is 'dark' - um, well I know what I mean

Michael, now your second dark is a vast improvement. Great detail in the smoke and reflections.

Rest has been covered by Summer.

For crit, I'd like to see the full smoke trail and reflection and perhaps a little more detail in the blacks, even though the theme is dark :D

Cheers.

Hello

Mineral - the practical side of mineral. Good shot and capture. The crop works well and the sky is a nice backdrop. Would be a great place to get up close and personal with, bet there is some good opportunities.

Dark - #1 doesnt scream dark to but, #3 is the best one for me out of the set. Dark and moody, really nice with reflection.

Dark - like it a lot. Trumps your others for me.
Would have been a bit better if the 'horizon' wasn't in the middle of the frame - but I guess it is too late to crop. You definitely need to keep the full reflections of the towers.

Very good image for the DARK theme. Spot on with that one!

Thanks for the comments all, everything noted and taken on board  I am going with the power station one for this weeks picture

Hi Michael, I'm glad you're going for the power station one - it is by far my favourite one! The reflections really help to make this shot!:):)
