Fuji x100

Mine has real problems focussing in Macro mode and MF is next to useless!!! I still LOVE the camera though and can't wait to use it in anger in decent weather. Roll on summer!!!

My other one was fine in this regard..its also terrible at f2 almost as if there is a fog over the image.:shrug:Most odd as the few shots I have taken with this one had been fine up to now..Its also doing this "when close focusing in macro mode at f/2.0 and f/2.8 the camera will get achieve/show sharp focus just before the focus point box turns to green . When the camera focus box turns green, the camera goes out of focus and the out of focus image(diffused, not sharp) will be recorded."

You can only use evf when in macro mode or the rear screen

Yes mate cant believe it..have thoroughly tested it today and its far from right.Contacted clifton as its only been a fortnight and they said send it back to them.Just not sure if I will go for a third one tbh..love the images and the camera but its doing my head in now..

I dont blame you, twice bitten!
Its a shame you have had such bad luck cos overall the build quality is ment to be top notch. The firmwares a bit glitchy but the lens shouldn't go wrong like that.
If you get a good one its gonna be a classic you'll probably keep forever.
On the other hand if you get another bad one you'll probably throw it out the window!! Lol

:lol:Your not wrong!..I love the camera but not amused with this.:shake:

Your having some bad luck Stuart. I don't seem to have any problems in macro mode, or any other really.
I took this today at ƒ2.8, with dozens more, all were in good focus.

Yeah Allan seems like its not to be lol..never had this issue with the other one but have had it a few times on this one but thought I would test it out properly today incase it was user error, which it most definitely wasnt..when it works its superb but certainly something a miss somewhere and looking around seems a few have had the focus issue where it looks sharp then goes out of focus just as the af area turns green. Got this after a few attempts lol

I really don't know why you guys persist with this camera - it seems that owning one is a similar experience to a Japanese endurance game, only for the driven masochist. I kept mine for a week and got rid.

Beautiful but very flawed. And you can get the same IQ from cameras that work perfectly in every mode. Not sure that tricksy OVF is worth the baggage.

Now, when the X200 comes out.......

Most of my shots of my daughter are taken in macro mode (also in mf with the back button focus which auto enables macro mode) and I've been quite impressed with it. I've not had many issues locking on, and when it does it's generally in low light.

Is it really as bad as that? Been very tempted but would welcome hearing your thoughts on it?

I certainly wouldnt say it was that bad at all..think I have just been unlucky.I tried with the af lock button in manual focus as well but had same result a couple of times.Funny thing was it would show as in focus on screen or through the viewfinder but when it played back the image it was blurred!

Thanks Stuart, I'm still not really decided either way :(
Going to go into Jessops tomorrow and have a play, been contemplating picking up a 20mm and 45mm for my EP2 rather than going through the hassle of selling my EP2 Kit.

I think that's a bit unfair. Can you elaborate?

Re: Macro...no problems for me auto-focusing in macro mode at all, but F2 is extremely soft at the edges and slightly soft in the centre. F2.8 is perfectly sharp. Not getting the 'foggy' effect. Sample variation perhaps?

Took about a dozen of these on the beach, with a moving crab. They all focused perfectly:

Just a thought Stuart, what settings are you using while getting the focus misses?

Looking at a case for my X100 and there are some on the bay that 'look' pretty good. They are arround £15 -£25 and some include an NP-95 type battery.

Anyone tried one of these? Here are a few links....

I had the black one for a while but it was too inconvenient in terms of the tripod mount and getting to the SD/battery door. Also, the top bit doesn't fit on when you have the filter adaptor fitted.

I ended up going for just a half case like this one:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-HB-Le...ags_Covers&hash=item3a7179f1d8#ht_6498wt_1159

Takes some time for shipping but it's excellent quality and hasn't left my camera.

That is perfect! I really only wanted a 1/2 case anyway. It's been ordered

Thanks for the linky!

Just need a spare battery and I'm sorted. I will order one from work.

Getting used to the frame lines was a bit odd, I kept forgetting about them so had to turn on the auto review!

Allan,

I notice you have the X10 and X100, which do you find yourself using the most?
I bought an Olympus 45mm lens yesterday and been out with the EP2 again but I'm still contemplating if I want either an X10 to go with my kit or a full on swap to the X100.

I don't really have a preference, although I suppose I have been using the X10 more lately, but only because I only bought it last month after I had been using the X100 for a couple of weeks.
I took the X100 out yesterday though, weather was awful but I got some nice shots. I was with a friend with his D90 and 50mm lens. Both lovely cameras, but I reckon I got more keepers first time round than he did.

Hi everyone.
I'm wondering if you can help me decide what to do. I want to ditch my d90 and various lenses for a smaller compact system.

I only shoot photos of my children and find that lugging the d90 around is just too much and the camera ends up staying at home.

I think I've narrowed it down to the x10 or x100

I want the nearest quality to my d90 as possible. I like sharp photos especially in the eyes etc. I also love to blow the background out from behind my subjects.

I want to go for the x10 because of the zoom but am wondering if the picture quality will come close to my d90.

I think the x100 would match the quality of my d90 but not sure if I will find the fixed focal length limiting with fast moving children

Any input would be appreciated. I'm going to post this on the x10 thread aswel to get some varied opinions

Thanks in advance

It's not the focal length that will limit you with shots of fast moving children, it's the AF. I still get shots of my daughter but it doesn't compare to using servo AF on my 1Ds2. Apart from that it ticks all the boxes for me :)

Its the fixed focal length thats making me think about the move over although part of me would like to get both the X10 and X100....

I've been looking through my shots and most of the stuff I've done since I got rid of my "full" DSLR kit is around between 30mm and 50mm (35mm equivalent), not since I've had a Sigma 10-20 on my Pentax have I shot wider and while I'd like to get a telephoto I know its not something I'd use a lot so for me it seems than an X100 would cover most of my bases for photography while providing it seems excellent IQ and also take away my ability to keep buying lenses!!!!

I would like to stay with m4/3 and add lenses to it but I really find the lack of a built in viewfinder annoying, as good as the clip on is I'm always worried about losing it and the only Olympus with one built in is the currently uber-expensive OM-D.

That said I can't help but feel buying an X100 might just make me start looking further up the X series at at X-Pro 1 :shake:

Thanks, those shots above are fantastic.
So how bad is the autofocus? Obviously it's not going to compete with a slr but does it manage or struggle with moving objects?

I think the AF is pretty good to be honest, it's pretty accurate and the hit rate is high. I trust it so when taking a shot in single shot AF mode I mash the shutter button all the way to quickly get the shot. The continuous AF mode I'm yet to really use. When selecting this mode you get a big cross in the centre of the viewfinder. This doesn't suit my style so I haven't used it much yet. Others may be able to give more feedback on that mode?

Thanks. I want a camera that is going to give me good subject isolation. I'm ditching my d90 as its too big for me and just not getting used. So im looking for a small camera to replace my big setup

I'm toying between the x100 and the x10

This is the type of shot I'm after

I just need to figure out if the x100 is worth the £230 more than the x10
