First Year of University - My 365

I have £2k in my bank as well from Student Loans and all that, but I'm gonna have to pay it back to Student Loans sadly =[.

Yeah aren't we all :(

I meant this week lol. Left University after a couple of weeks, hated every second of it, and the course was not what I wanted to do. Looking at being a Chef or a Police Officer, not a Computer Games Developer.

What does your girlfriend do whilst you stay in:
a)pine at a photo of you
or
b)hang out with her roomies etc?

If its a, you should split as you have no intentions of bieng what she wants you to be
If its b, you should split as you both have your uni lives to live and it appears you are bringing each other down

Dont mean to harsh your mellow, but as you are workshy loafers you should both enjoy it until you have to enter the real world.

This is just a bit of advice from some-one whos been through all that, presented jokily, dont take any offence.

My advice would be drink more, get rid of the lady friend and have lots of lady friends ;)! Having a steady lady in ones life can be a great thing, but when your at uni... you gotta take advantage mang! Wish I had, just didn't realise at the time... 10 years on, gutted, see all the lovely young people walking past my house every day! And don't ever not do what you want to do because of a woman... don't see any of my ex's sitting on my lap now ;), bit of fun, get serious when your happy with where you are in life! Ohhh so jelouse... want to be 18 again with all the knowledge I now posses ;)! Hmmm that's still pretty limited to be fair!

thats a shame, sorry to hear that pieface.

Aye, at least I experienced the "best" bit of Uni, Freshers Week. Also got Freshers Flu to prove it >.< but at least I know now and not 3 years down the line.

You've gotta love students though, haven't you? You know, the people who come to live in your town/city for 3-4 years, make all the pubs "theirs", turn speed limit signs (and other road signs) around for a giggle, move temporary traffic light into the middle of the road, throw up all over the high street, cr@p in doorways, pee wherever they want, park wherever they feel like (although the traffic wardens (or whatever they're called now) are making a fortune at the moment. :) ), drive like aerosols (including when too p155ed to walk), leave rubbish out whenever they feel like it for the seagulls, rats etc, take garden gates, wheelie bins and anything else not bolted down for a walk and leave it anywhere, ideally in the middle of the road or someone's garden...

Rant over - at least there are some pretty girls among them for us old men to letch at while we wait for them to cross the road while the red man's telling them not to.

The one positive is they displace the chavs, that do exactly the same, but with more violence.;) They also bring money into the city, not take it out.:p

You sound like you are doing the right thing for the start of uni, making friends instead of spending the entire time with your GF (which would make you sooo antisocial), however maybe that's why she feels you are not caring about her as much, perhaps she isn't enjoying her time as much as you?

Having said that you could just have a mental GF (sorry if i'm being harsh) in which case she will be ****** annoying to your friends as well. My HM had one like yours and she did my head in almost as much as she did his.:p

God, living in halls, I was lucky that I didn't get into them so stayed in a house for my 3 years, having spent the occasional night at a GF's hall I feel your pain (we decided it was better to go to mine instead, double bed for the win!). Halls seem so impersonal too.

You should try "woktails" next time you do a night in, get a wok and fill it up with a little bit of booze you have, then as the night goes on people take drink out, and add some of whatever they are drinking... Normally it tastes pretty good (people always have fruitg juice/coke), but can be lethal if people have been pouring copious amounts of spirits/wine in.:p

lol @ kev

and I have a double bed :D

Masters degree but in engineering not photography

Undergrad, not proper masters I take it? 30 hours? Wow, my civil eng course was only 20 and that was considered a lot.

I only have 5 hours lectures a week then 3 seminars of an hour each, its a nice easy life, just need to find a job now to pay the bills

English student?

I don't even see why you go to uni!:p

(You pay the same amount to do it as well, I like to think you lot subsidise the "harder" courses);):p

Day 013 - 01/10/2009

Had a digital media lecture yesterday. Was really cool but me and a student who is at least double my age got into a heated debate about whether there was a future for printed media.
I said no (albeit a long way off) as with each generation things become more and more digital. There won't be much of a market for printed media in say, 150 years time and so people will stop printing.
She said there would be as her generation prefer physically holding something. I explained that this was exactly my point - my generation are pretty much indifferent.
She said that she thinks people will have a choice, and I said not if the big corporations stop printing they won't, and used the French Government as my example - they want every home to have internet access. What if people don't want internet access?

Haven't been out in a few nights and yet to have any work to do so the nights are beginning to get boring...

Really enjoying the updates... brings back memories. Re: above sentence, why don't you take your gf out?

Day 014 - 02/10/2009

We had every intention of going out last night, but we didn't. We all just got hammered in the halls.
Today I feel bloody terrible, and I have 6 hours of lectures today. Woe is me.

Nah, Military History it is a fair point though working it out to an hourly rate we end up paying far too much for a year ( about 24 p/h of actual teaching)

Day 015 - 03/10/2009

Yesterday the brummy down our corridor had his mates come to stay. He'd been partying all week and thought he was ready for his mates. Turns out he wasn't. He needed somewhere to sleep for half an hour so I let him. He was in there for an hour and a half aha.

Today I'm doing my first bit of work - organising my assignments so I know what is due and when. Meh.

Day 016 - 04/10/2009

So, we decided to go out last night. Oceana.
We were at the bar. Now I'm sure you all know a in a club bar works differently to a bar in a pub. It's not first come first served, it's the person who can attract the bar person's attention in the most discrete and least rude way possible will get served first.

I was at the bar for about 20 minutes, and there was a few people who came after me and got served before me, as is the way of the bar. It's cool, just be patient and smile and make eye contact.

Being a saturday, there were a lot of middle aged people.
Not to offend anyone here, but clubbing is really for the under 30's. It just is.
There were people there who are easily 45. All looking to pull some under 20's. Gross.

Anyway, there was a fat old bald guy at the bar next to me. There were a lot of girls around and at this section of the bar it was just me and this guy who were blokes. The bar lady came to serve me first because I was smiling and not waving a 20 in her face. The guy kicked off and was having a go at the bar lady saying that he'd been waiting there for ages, and having a go at me for not telling her that he'd been waiting longer, saying it's not very English of me and properly getting angry about it. I said to the bar lady to just serve him, I didn't mind, and not wanting to get in a fight with a guy easily twice the size of me, I just apologised and asked her to serve him. She refused, she looked really ****ed off. Can't blame the poor girl. She stood up for her saying "If you're going to continue being a ****** I'm not going to serve you at all."

Anyway, she said "Look, I'm serving you, what do you want?" fair enough, ordered a few drinks and left the bar.
That was the tone of the club really.

Don't think I'll be going out at the weekends here. Just all the middle class scum looking for a fight.

My brummy mate got punched on the dance floor for accidentally walking into someone on the dance floor. He knocked him to the ground and legged it as the whole dance floor turned into a massive fight.

Wasters.

We had epic chicken and bacon burgers for dinner.

Day 017 - 05/10/2009

I think everyone is coming down with a cold. I've started to cough, so I've pumped myself full of vitamins and I'm hoping for the best.

I need a haircut, and the funny thing is, it would literally be cheaper for me to get the train home, have my mum cut my hair, and come back again.

I'm running low on supplies so I think I need to do a shop today.
Wet wipes (don't judge me), squash, garlic puree and tomato puree.

yeah undergrad masters, same degree though, just a massive lack of real world experience

I only every Saturday club at the SU club (lemmy) in exe, there might be a student night on a Saturday somewhere?

The good thing about mine is that since it's a HND the focus is really on getting out there and doing stuff that we'd do in the real world. Pitching ideas, doing presentations, coming up with ideas, working with clients, working to a brief, things that are all going to be useful. Just a massive range of things, and no exams. My assignments are around 25% essays, 25% reports, 25% group or individual presentations, and 25% portfolios.
Next teaching period we'll be pitching, organising and marketing a real event.

BTW, what uni are you at again Foodposion?

Southampton Solent University.
There are 30,000 students who go there so hopefully no one will stalk me :p

Dreaded Freshers Flu....

It's just everyone has been drinking non stop, so everyone's immune system is all screwed up, then someone contracts a cold and that's it.

also its people from diff parts of the country thrown together with compromised immune systems,
each area has its own flu so a northerner might have no antibodies against a southern flu - each difference in virus is slight but can make it more potent - not counting foreign students

There are loads of people with coughs, runny noses etc at uni here - although I don't have any of that as I had a flu jab before I came (evil laugh - ha ha haaa).

Day 018 - 06/10/2009

Group bolognaise. Georgia, one of the girls in my kitchen, managed to burn the pasta. God knows how.

Last night was absolutely epic. It was 'whammed' superhero freshers festival - 6 different clubs dressed as batman.
The crawl was meant to start at 7pm, but we decided to just do our own thing until 10pm. It was nice, green and yellow kitchens united and it was a good night. Absolutely tonnes of funny stories - those are the best nights. Probably the best night out I've had since I've been here. Batman tshirt, skinny black jeans, black skate trainers, fat Bench belt, and a homemade cape. Awesome.

For my birthday my girlfriend got me tickets to Enter Shikari, who are playing tonight at the Southampton Guildhall.
I'm absolutely psyched. It is going to be epic. Enter Shikari are one of my favourite bands, and they're easily my favourite live band.

At the moment I'm waiting for the crappy counter-top oven to warm up.
Curly fries and toasted bacon sandwich. Lush.

I'm becoming quite an artist in the kitchen in comparison to what I used to be. it turns out I know substantially more than I thought I did.
Last night I cooked a Reggae Reggae stir fry - sharwood noodles, broccoli, red pepper, chicken breast and most importantly, a healthy dash of Reggae Reggae sauce. Tonight I'm going to cook something simple for me and Sophie - pasta with a homemade pasta sauce consisting of chopped tomatoes, tomato puree, a bit of garlic and basil and some bacon to top it off.

Loving this thread Sean!
But where are all the drunken pics?!? Would have expected at least one by now! Obvs with you being sober to use camera or with a P+S??
Glad things are smoothing out for you dude!

I am loving this tread to bits. But not being through a uni here; I am lost in a few of the nuances.

For example: what is the green and yellow kitchen business? Can anyone please enlighten....

Glad to hear it :)
I own a P&S, but I'm not even sure I've brought it. Not really a 'take pictures on a night out' kind of guy. All the halls drunk pics are taken by me. As is the way of having a 'really good' or 'big' camera :p

I live in Student Halls of Residence. We have 5 floors. I live on the third floor and on my floor are 44 rooms. There are 4 kitchens divided by all of them. I'm in green kitchen and a bunch of other people are in yellow, which are next to each other. There's sort a satirical, jokey 'war' between the two.

Ah ...got it.

So is the war about who cooks the best, or who cooks the......

And do these warring factions get invited once in a while to sample each others 'effort'?

Foodpoison, you need to either get yourself a compact or start taking your SLR everywhere with you. This as started well, but the way it is going, by the end of the year, all you end up with are static photographs of objects around your flat then you might as well go shoot the rest now and spend time enjoying uni rather than planning shots.

I am telling you this is because it does sound like you are having a good time, but where are the photos? If photography is important to you then you should photograph it, so get a compact or don't be scared taking the SLR out, because I can tell you now, if you don't, you will look back and wish you did. You are missing out a LOT of good photographic opportunities.

Don't worry Raymond, I will be. It's just these first few weeks. This city has a lot of potential and I fully intend on making the most of it. I've already seen thousands of potential shots and that's just from A) my walk to uni and B) the walk to west quay. You'll be seeing a lot more of it throughout the year but for now you're just going to have to make do with some static halls shots as they're all i've had an opportunity to shoot :)

Day 019 - 07/10/2009

So as this thread evolves, it's going to become more and more about the photographs. At the moment though, for me, it's about the experience.
It's about telling you guys what's going on and for some of you it's going to make you smile because it reminds you of your uni years and for some of you it's going to make you go "Oh my god that happened to me last night!" because you're in the same boat as me. I guess others will enjoy it because we're a digital generation and this is what we enjoy looking at. I certainly do.

Today I have nothing really to do. I'm going to do some washing. Then I'm going to the cinema to see Ricky Gervais' "The Invention of Lying". It's going to cost me £2.30 because of Orange Wednesdays. Then I'm going to buy some folders from Staples and start organising notes. Then I'm going to cook myself some dinner. Then I think I might go over to the other Residence and see some of my mates from home (they came to the same uni). I've had a 45 minute lecture today in "Digital Media" about Second Life. Creepy.
