First Year of University - My 365

Really? I find IS to be fairly useless at such a 'low' range, I wouldn't consider using it till about 200mm. Why do you think the IS would be so useful on that lens?

Also if I've read it correctly - the focusing is your cameras fault? so why not spend a bit of money on getting that fixed instead?

James

Have just sent an email to Sigma and Canon regarding the issue

I'd rather, personally, have the money there if I get in a lot of trouble, then when I've finished uni, minimize my debt...

Having said that, looking at previous sales, I could probably get a good copy of the 24-105 for £550. Sell my 24-60 for £150. £400. I have a £500 overdraft, £150 in my Natwest account, effectively meaning I have £650. Add the £150 from the 24-60 means I have £800. Buy the 24-105 and I have £250 left over.

But it's early days. I may well need that money if I find getting a job really difficult.

Someone with sense please tell me the truth. Not all you students who find it easy to spend other people's money :p

I'm trying to look at it as if it's not my money.

It's not your money, the bank would LOVE you to take advantage of their generosity and to borrow their £500 at a fairly extortionate rate of interest.
How long will it take you to pay back the overdraft? How much interest will you rack up during that period? How long will it take to pay back the loan and interest and the interest on the interest? How much will that £500 eventually cost?

I'm guessing that you're not having much luck finding work in Southampton. It may be too late for this year but next year, go back fairly early and do the rounds before all the other students grab the best ones. And don't be too picky - wherever the wages come from, they can be spent on beer, wimmin and equipment!

There is a psychological barrier with loans, overdrafts, and credit cards.

Effectively, the money is not yours; but as has been said, banks want you to use it up and get into that whirlpool ... once you're psychologically happy to use these funding means, you will forever be using them. Hence why they are an addictive means.

If you can see what they're doing, then do your best to avoid it. The last thing you need is to have the weight of debts on your shoulders for the rest of your life.

Keep in mind, this isn't about the student loan, it's about the whole issue of using funds that's not yours to throw-away.

You're a very sane and rational young-man; stay that way :)

Interest free student overdraft

I had the issue of being too picky last job hunt. I didn't want to 'be a nerd' and work in Jessops, so I didn't hand in a CV there. I finally got desperate and so handed one in, and worked there for 2 years and loved it.

student overdrafts are free but I know what you mean

Yeah I totally get that. You don't feel comfortable spending money that's not yours, but once you get past that, that's it. You're done for.

My 24-60 has always been an awesome lens so I think I'm just going to get it fixed.

Had an email from sigma, fairly quick!

Day 025 - 13/10/2009

Things are on the up. It was mine and my girlfriend's '12-months-anniversary-of-the-day-we-met' last night. (anything to please the girlfriend :p) so I went to hers for a very nice thai green curry (never had it before).

Will be getting my lens fixed which pleases me greatly.

And I have today and tomorrow off. It's like a weekend.

 Good plan FP, stick to sense mate, its the photographer not the equipment they say, so restricting yourself with sense is only going to aid your talents in the long run I reckon...

Anyway its just stuff, it don't make you happy for long...But succeeding in something feels good forever.

...Ive been told. ;)

PS, Oh and sorry for being 40years plus and nicking all your women ...what can I say ...I never thought it would be this good at your age. hahaha haha ;)

Haha absolutely. Stuff makes me happy, but being good at something makes me happier.

And last bit, what's this related to? Confused and feel sad about missing the joke :(

Ya bloody ageist the pair of you. :p

No, I'm firmly in the Old Fart category. All's fair in love and war, so it's acceptable for some gals to complain about bellies and baldness yet run after the right car and cash.

I have no style, and walk to the pub without much cash. ;)

Day 026 - 14/10/2009

One of my hall mates uses a bottle to hold his door open, so me and my other mate reckoned we could kick it. I went first, and after the amount of vodka I had had, missed completely and fully smashed the door frame with my foot.

Absolute d*** head.

Anyway, hurts today, Jon the sports guy thinks I've busted a few filanges and then stretched/strained ligaments trying to compensate. If it's still bad in the next few days I'll go to the hospital.

Good night however, went out with the same few girls as the previous night.

Wahey! Nice one Sean! Great to see some pics out and about! Keep em coming!
As for your foot - I recommend more of the good stuff you consumed before said 'door attack'

Keep having a great time dude - it truly is one of the best bits of life

Those pictures were from a fire alarm - hence the group of people outside the hall.
Taken all within about 10 minutes. Saw the building with the lamp-post, aimed, composed, focussed, expose, check histogram, adjust, expose. Saw the second building (the blue one) and saw a similar composition, and same again. I brought them in, looking at the raws I was fairly disappointed with the lack of a wow factor, but I didn't give up on them. Smashed the white balance, colour balance, contrast, blacks, saturation all over the place until I got something I liked. Safe to say they didn't look like this at the time :p

I was going to go out with my camera tonight but I'd rather not with the state of my foot.

I've just read through the entrie thread from the start

Dammit this brings back some memories of my student life - good and bad. Sounds like you are doing it right, and having great fun!

I'm only going to offer one piece of advice - don't build up unnecessary debt. Banks can be an absolute sod to students when they just withdraw the overdraft the extended every time you got close to the limit...

My Dad is putting in £150 per month into the bank I have an interest free overdraft with. Judge me all you want, my Dad wants to help out and can afford to do so, so I'm not going to turn extra help away!

Anyway, what this means is that if I withdraw from my overdraft I'll not pee the bank off too much. Thanks for the advice :)

Day 027 - 15/10/2009

Unfortunately I don't have an image for you today. Will double up tomorrow I think.

Today has been a rubbish day.
I got up at 11am, did some washing, had some bacon sandwiches and started watching "The Hurt Locker". Seen it before, epic film.

I left 15 minutes early for uni taking into account my foot. Left at 12:30 instead of 12:45 for my 1pm lecture.
After about 2 minutes of walking my foot was in complete agony. I turned around and came home, no way I could be walking for half an hour.

Andie gave us a lift to the hospital, was there for 3 hours, turns out it was bruised. And I had to pay for my prescription because I'm 19. That was a bit of a slap in the face!

Did some shopping at Tesco, came back to a room that stank of wet clothes. I'd lent someone my drier and they weren't in this morning so I just had a basket of wet clothes on the floor of my room all day.

Tonight is Carnage and I didn't get a tshirt in time, and now they're all sold out. Georgia has gone home, Andie is at work, and most of the people on my floor are going to Carnage. Bad times!
Tonight is fajita thursdays though, so that's a highlight.

Edit!
Sudden burst of inspiration. Everyone is out, empty, moody corridors... Camera time!
Yes, it's inside, it's halls, never mind eh! Over the weekend me and April are going out with the cameras so expect some fun stuff there.

Day 028 - 16/10/2009

Foot is agony, but today has been okay.
Once again, digital media was condescending. We did 'typography'. We used words like "smile" and "tall" and expressed them by manipulating the words :|

In photography we were given our assignment brief.
Part 1: A 1500 word illustrated essay on the effect of the digital revolution on photography. Easy peasy. I talk about this stuff every day on here.
Part 2: A portfolio of 10 original photographs and an 800 word report on them, plus a 10 minute presentation on a photographer who has influenced me. Theme for 3 of the photos is "A Day in the Life", another 3 is "Promotion" and and the final 4 are negotiable and self-assigned, i.e. I choose my own theme so long as my tutor agrees

Anyway.
It seemed fine, 800 words is rubbish though. In A-Level I did more than double this amount of work in photography. I guess I'll have to learn to put my point across better.

Sun shone through the windows today, while Kate and Georgia sat on the computers. No doubt on facebook :p

hah, their rooms are a lot messier than the ones i've been into here. I much prefer the shots with people though, the guitar one is great and makes me really wish i brought my camera because we regularly sit and play the guitar together.

Keep it up!

might be to make you work harder on keeping it short, A level history limited our essays to 3k which was hard to keep down to as the essay was 3 months work :D Had the same with a report being limited to 4 pages here, buggers

I really want to get an acoustic. sitting and chilling strumming away, it looks so relaxing.

Well yeah but 800 words to explain the meaning behind 10 different photos under 3 different themes, who influenced me and how I got to them is a minuscule amount.

800 words? I wrote 19,000 for my A level exam...

But your course isn't a dedicated photography course is it? I'm guessing the photography only counts for a tiny part really?

Enjoying the pics - keep them coming

Exactly. It's nothing.

And no, photography is only 1/5 of the course. But still for A-Level it was 1/4 of my course and I did about 3x the amount of work.

I wasn't saying it was a lot, I was saying its too little, they do it to make you condense your ideas grumble grumble

your uni got a photosoc?

Sucks doesn't it :(

I condense my ideas fine, but I can't put like, 2 months work on 10 different images and 3 different themes into 800 words.

As far as a photography society goes, I'm not sure, and I don't really want to be part of one anyway. I find that (please no one take offence from this) most people in those sorts of societies are very snobby and I can't be dealing with that. I was looking at getting in on photographing club night life or potentially things for the student paper. If there is one. One of my friends has her own radio show on Radio Solar on mondays at 11am-12pm so she's pretty excited about that.

I want to join a society, but I missed freshers fair and there isn't like a list anywhere about the societies so it's quite difficult to figure out what's going on.

Day 029 - 17/10/2009

Went down to Ocean Village harbour tonight. Cold and my back hurts from walking dodgy on my busted food, but I managed to get some good shots off.
Dossed a lot today. Got up at 1, cooked some soup, then before we went out I had a few sausage rolls. Got back and had tinned spaghetti bolognaise.

My friend from home is making an appearance tonight in Southampton so I'm going to go out. Not particularly looking forward to spending money but I'm hoping to only spend £10 so long as entry is free.

Day 030 - 18/10/2009

Today my parents came to visit. We went for lunch at 'The New Forest' pub, had a burger. Easily the nicest burger and the nicest chips I've ever had. It's on the way to Lyndhurst from Southampton, by Ashurst. Well worth a visit.

Went for a wander around Ocean Village in the daytime this time. Was nice to see the rents. Mum brought me a lasagne, a big cake and some shortbread biscuits, and took my bedsheets home to wash. N'awhh.

give the society a go they might have a darkroom to play in, but like camera clubs some are good some are ****

I did a quick google and got facebook flickr email a committee member and meet up with them see if it could be good for you (if you came to one of my socials I'd have you nabbed for teaching stuff and helping in darkroom lessons as you know your stuff)

i didn't know there were two southamptons, I only joined for the darkroom tbh now I'm running it and having a great laugh, btw my last mach loop trip was done on expenses ;)
