Canon EOS R Series Cameras

What is the lend time for canon despatching, and delivering a lens ?
reason I ask is that I am off to a air show on Saturday 06th Sept
Depends on availability, I think. Give them a call or just look on the site?

Well I've now had a few days to play with the R5 mk2 and the R1 and for what it's worth, here are my initial thoughts.

They basically agree with most of the things written in articles by people more qualified than me, but for me there's no substitute for hands on testing and to that end the Canon loan scheme is IMHO excellent, as you're potentially shelling out quite a wedge of cash.

There's no doubt that the R1 is a really solid bit of kit and the R5/2 although very solid doesn't feel as if it would take the same punishment, however I suspect most of us will be pretty careful with our gear so that shouldn't be a problem.

I attempted to have as near identical settings as possible, obviously and shot under different lighting conditions (although all outside)

As expected, the 6µ pitch and 36µm area is always going to be better than the R5/2 4.39µ and 19.3µ area as regards noise and low light and this was borne out in my trials, the R5/2 just wouldn't focus in really low light situations which didn't bother the R1 however I doubt I'd ever shoot in these conditions in real life.

Also although there was a significant difference in noise at high ISO, once I'd run them both through Topaz (and I suspect Adobe would give similar results) it wouldn't be a deal breaker as it's just amazing to me how good these noise reduction programmes are.

I'd say the AF performance is slightly better in the R1 but again not significantly.

For me therefore as I'm looking to save weight it'll be the R5/2 I'll be keeping, the battery life is of course much less on the R5 but a few spare batteries and that's solved.

I'm not now using big primes, I'm limited to the 100-500, however I suspect hand held shooting with a white prime and the R1 would just "feel" better.

All in all then, given the price difference, it's a no brainer for me to stick with the R5/2 however if you are a pro sports photographer I can see the attraction of the R1 otherwise spending the extra cash would be hard to justify.

I look forward to any comments/criticisms!!

One great disadvantage of the R5 series, and I don't know why Canon always do this, is having 2 different memory cards!....a real pain!!

Has anyone got both a R1 and an R5 mk2?

I've moved from a 1Dx 2 series mirror to the R5 mk 2 but I'm regretting not going for the 1 series body and am thinking of trading up.

Trouble is I'll be taking a big hit on the R5 mk2, WEX are only offering me £2450, and I can't decide whether I should just buy the battery grip!!

Comments appreciated!!

Thanks, George.
If the battery grip is the same one used for the R5, I would not buy it as it doesn’t mirror the buttons exactly and means muscle memory is compromised. I have the grip, I just never use it.

Thanks Linda but I've decided that I'll just carry a couple of spares with me as the likelihood of me needing to shoot through a whole battery is remote and I'll be saving the weight when carrying it!!

That sounds a pain though and thanks for the tip!...and yes it's still the BG-20

It took a week or so longer than I anticipated but it's on its way, ordered my R5ii today.

Hi guys. I'm about to sell a 5D Mk2 with a couple of lenses and bits and pieces. I'm not really sure what price I could be asking for. Am I allowed to ask here what the overall price should be if I post photos?

There's a specific forum for price checks on here. If you check the forum lists you should be able to find it

Doh! Silly me, I see that price check forum now. Thanks.

Panamoz? Be interesting to see what firmware is on it?

It'll be standard international firmware - default language English.

Also check the serial no with the Canon UK link, which probably won’t prove much other than it was not intended for sale in the UK.

And makes no difference as Canon will still let you register it as the owner. It just means Canon UK won’t do warranty repairs, but that’s why the 3 year warranty is supplied.

Is anyone using the Canon processing software?
I used it for a couple of years quite happily before going to Adobe Camera Raw, and with Adobes latest shenanigans, I’m considering my options.

Who said it was or wasn't Panamoz?

Firmware is version 1.1.1.
I wonder when/ if there will be the major firmware update which was rumoured for months to address the battery and AF alleged issues?
It’s gone very quiet on the rumour front.

Can you just download the Canon processing software?

Dale, you may be already aware of this but just in case you're not the Neewer batteries work very well and are much cheaper than the Canon ones.
I've bought both and frankly can't tell the difference in performance.

I indulged and got an extra LP-E6P, so I have 2 now. I have a few of the older type but I'm yet to try them, we'll see how it goes.

Thanks for the tip, the Neewer ones would make good back ups.

Last time I download canon software I believe I had to input a camera serial number, or my canon membership number...

Me too, a couple of months ago but as Steve mentioned ^^^ , I think it can be avoided.

I've not taken an image with the R5 yet, I try to make the first one count, it's just a tradition I have with a new camera. Anyway, I have been setting it up and one of the reasons I bought it was that whilst not identical, the button layout is ballpark similar to my R7, so muscle memory should be a cinch. One thing I was noticing though, that the 'Image Stabilisation' tab was greyed out and when I dug into it, I got an info message saying it was 'restricted by the current lens'. I only have EF glass for now (using the adapter) and I had a 16-35 f4L attached.

On my R7, the 'Image Stabilisation' tab isn't greyed out and I couldn't get my head around why it was on the R5ii.

Long story short, you can disable it in camera on the R7 but on the R5, it automatically engages when you flick the IS switch on the lens to on. I'm noting this here incase somebody else might be tryng to figure that one out, there's no need to send the camera back.

Also to add, a non IS lens will be stabilised in body by the camera if the stabilisation is activated in camera. The tab lights up when a non IS lens is attached.

That's how I'm understanding that but I stand to be corrected. :)

I've noticed a couple of little nuances but apart from the IS thing last night, it's very similar and I now have my R5 set up close to what my R7 has evolved into over the last 2 years. One other thing I changed was the light meter being on the RHS of the VF/screen. I changed that back to the bottom but it's default to the side out of the box. I've also noticed this morning, the viewfinder is stunning. It's a nice day here and the difference between the R5's VF and the R7 is significant, not that the R7 is bad at all.

The R5 seems to be a bit of a weapon. (y)

I’ll be interested to see how you get on with bird photography on the R5ii compared with the R7. You will lose the crop obviously but it should be better to crop from the R5ii images and the noise should be lower.

Time to save for the 100-500mm f4.5-7.1 L IS USM RF Lens?

I will probably give the R5 a runout in the hide over the weekend at some point, although it will be intended for landscapes too but I can't be landscaping this weekend.

I did have concerns about all the things being said 'out there' about the R5ii's dynamic range. I'm not worried now though, whilst it seems to have taken a slight hit to the MKi, it's still slightly better than my 5Div, and that's very good, so no worries there. (y)

The R7 can be noisy and in the situations I've been using that camera, deepest, darkest, wooded rivers mainly, in not great all round light usually and whilst also trying to control the little white bits on Kingfishers ......... R7 files could be noisy. I'm expecting the R5 to be a significant improvement. One thing my 7D taught me was exposing to the right and I now do that without thinking about it, whatever camera I have in my hands. ETTR is so much easier with a histogram in the VF too and I am expecting nice clean files off the R5. For now though, I will be sticking with the R7 for Kingfishers, until I get to know the R5 better but I don't think that will take long.

I've been using the 100-400L mkii on my R7, with the 1.4xTCiii, they gel very well together. Apart from the f8 bit, which can be a pain, I've enjoyed using that combo. I've gotten incredible detail out of them together, even when cropping. I have considered the 100-500 RF but I don't think it will offer much more in most cases than what I already have and know, especially on the R5.

I'm pretty sorted lens wise at the moment, albeit EF but I think I'm going to be concentrating on shorter RF primes when the time comes ........... lens purchases are not an option for a while, so lots of time to think about that .............. and drool over them.

Haven’t they announced they’re no longer selling the annual membership via 3rd parties? They insist I add a payment method before the end of my subscription?

I think I need an L bracket now as well as a nice wrist strap, for security on walkarounds.

Any recommendations please?

I have a R7 I looked a generic DSLR L brackets on Amaz*n of which there plenty ranging from £8 to £25
Beauty of the generic one is will fit my R7 or any other camera I may get in the future. The side plate has lots of mounting holes which I will use to mount Rode Mic's, clamps for power packs for my mobile which I mount in the hot to capture video while take stills. Really good for air shows, motorsport etc.

L Brackets, look at Pig Iron, Camolo, Harwerrel, all arca swiss

I preferred the small rig cages to the L bracket Dale as it covers all my needs

If you currently have CC 20gb subscription you should be able to switch to the annual plan just before your current subscription expires. You will not get the Amazon type discounts but it will equate to just under £10pm.

Not something I keep on the camera but I bought Pig Iron one earlier this year for my R6, it is fine.

If you get a generic one make sure you can still access the battery compartment and any required sockets.

Depending on your requirements for screen use you may want to check out pictures, reviews etc of the bracket in use with the screen.

I ended up with an Ulanzi specific one for my R7 as the generic ones have a slot on the upright arm where you have feed in the screen if you like using it to the side. For me this seemed fiddly, didn't allow full movement of the screen plus I could imagine damaging the screen as you manoeuvred it into position.

The body shape of the R5 may not create these issues. I think I did a review for a FB group of brackets (albeit for the R7). If this might be of interest I'll see if I can dig it out and post it

The L bracket interfering with the screen is a concern I have. I tried a generic one I have on my 5Div on the R5 last night and it was preventing the screen opening fully to the side.
