Blondie606's Photo52 2011-Wk 52 Glass & Nature,Challenge Complete

Hiya Lynne,

So glad to see you broadening your photography skills .... if anyone has learned a lot in this Photo52 I think it is you.

You have really pushed your boundaries at times and I respect you for that

Your latest photos are great and a subject I have wanted to tog ... but just don't seem to know where to start and am also slightly apprehensive about doing. Although it is something on my Round Tuit list

I can see how this fits with the theme of 'explode' ... and in my eyes would also suit the current theme of 'rapid' .... after all I suspect one has be pretty quick on the trigger for this type of capture.

I envy you for the fantastic first attempt ..... and I sure hope I can achieve such pleasing results when I have a go. Hey there is an idea ... maybe you could visit some time .... teach me how to do this type of photography and in exchange I will share my knowledge of fungi photography and take you to see some great places for togging local to moi.

Right .... now for the critique .... I like both images but feel they are strong enough to stand alone ... rather than in a diptych. The second image has more impact for me because I feel the sense of motion and the implosion/explosion of the water drop, not to mention the bokeh is absolutely amazing on this one. It has a very festive feel to the image.

I notice your response to what you used as background .... very inventive

Well done on both and I look forward to seeing the next few weeks .... I can't believe we are almost at the end .... it seems like just yesterday we started this project.

Good on you girl for keeping up with the pace and producing some amazing shots.

Dawn....many thanks for you very kind words...not sure about learning lots...but it has def given me the push I neededd to try togging different stuff & attempt to use pp ( still not very well I hasten to add ! )

If you ever find a few spare hours have a go at water drops...but be warned....it's ADDICTIVE  It'd be great to come over & show you the very basic method I used...picked up on here by the way...but Neil has them nailed so maybe we could drag him along as well ? Fungi hunting is def to do...just text when you're gonna be off to find them

I did think about putting them on separately but quite liked them together...I think ?

I also can't believe we're in the final stages of this challenge...already looking forward to next year:)

Lynne,
You have nailed the water drop shot. The right hand shot does stand alone. Well done!!!

Keep it up.

Adie

Rapid...after thinking for a short while I decided what I wanted to do...Rapid = speed = cars or Bikes & went off in search of a suitable model...couldn't find an Aston or a Ducati :'( so plumped for an Audi R8 .
Unfortunately car showrooms are full of yucky stuff ( window decals , display stands not to mention horrid reflections etc etc ) so failed to get the image I wanted....

Got a couple of shots I liked & decided to have a play in picnik....not to everyones taste I know but in an strange way I quite like the finished images:lol:

Hiya Lynne,

You are welcome and as said I think you are doing a fab job with your project

Water drops is defo next on my agenda for togging .... I've had a few 'togging sports' listed for the approaching winter months and light trails and light painting are two I seem to be favouring at the moment. Water drops will be next on the list when it starts to get too cold to go outdoors.

As for fungi .... it has been a bit of a weird season this year, and very brief to say the least. There was a manic spell at one point a few weeks ago, but now they seem to be a bit scarce. Think it may have to do with the strange season change we have had. But I will keep my eyes peeled and if there is activity I will let you know. Otherwise we may have do make a plan for a good old fungi forage at the start of the next season

Onto your rapid shots .... I have to say I  the first image .... excellent processing.

TBH I'm not as taken with the other two shots, mainly because I think the 2nd is too tight a crop and the 3rd just doesn't say 'rapid' to me .... but then again that may be because I'm not as much a motor-head as your are :D

So for me .... #1 gets my

Cheers

Dawn :)

If I'm honest Lynne, and I always aim to be, I think the processing has ruined these, sorry.

A good colour shot of the car with no blur processing would still hit the theme, especialy for thos who know what an R8 Spyder is. Find an angle that works well with some DOF and gets the model name in and that would have cracked it.

As they are, the colour is flat and the blur is distracting.

Sounds harsh for which I'm sorry, but there is no point giving false C&C.

Thanks for the positive reply Dawn...had a feeling the PP effects might appeal to you :)

The top one of the 2nd 2 images.....nightmare:bang: Couldn't crop any wider as other cars,a couple of display units & a person had intruded & my pp is not that good . I chose the rear view as thats where the engine is...which leads to the 2nd image...trust me Dawn...a V10 is very Rapid

Fungi this year or next sounds good to me...by the weather forecast I think next year is the most probable :D

& its a big thanks to you & all on here for pushing me out of my comfort zone with what I like to shoot

Hiya babes

I didn't mention this in the last post .... but you, me and Kev met up in one of my dreams for a meet ..... which sadly went disastrous. We all had different tastes regards togging and if it wasn't for Posiview and Mentalblock coming to our rescue we would have had havoc  (OMG the things and thoughts this 52 has done to my mind ..... attempting such a feat should come with a mental health warning )

Regardless, I am soooo looking forward to meeting up with you all for the end of 52 meet .... and hopefully there will be a few more joining us at the end!!!!

Neil :boxer: always appreciate honesty & in general I agree with what you're saying....however..... I did put this at the start :

"Unfortunately car showrooms are full of yucky stuff ( window decals , display stands not to mention horrid reflections etc etc ) so failed to get the image I wanted.... "

I've posted below the original image so you can see what I was up against :

DSC_0581.jpg

In an ideal world...& indeed my desired shot ,was exactly as you say......Motor magazine style shot was the intention , all sharp colors & lovely backdrops :) I had thought about an RS Ford in the lime green or orange as everyone recognises those 2 versions...however I don't know anyone who owns one of those so settled for the R8 . I didn't have the facility to take take it out of the showroom ( not taxed ) so had to settle for what I could get :p

I Know theres many on here - yourself included that could have created the image I wanted from the original shot...but as evevryones well aware my PP abilities are next to non existent

My apologies if I'm coming across as a little a***y , just need you to understand why I did what I did.... I felt the blur may added to the Rapid impression.
Anyhooo...I'll get back in my box now...hope I have'nt offended you with my response :)

Can't wait to see you all again soooooon!

Firstly, I never read these things as a***y, so don't worry about that and certainly no offence taken.

I must have missed your first bit about the showroom environment, which explains a lot. But on reflection (pun intended :D) would you go in for a close-up of a feature to try and avoid all the clutter? What metering did you use? Spot metering on the car may have helped expose for the car rather than that terrible back lighting from the window.

I thought you may like this linky. I like this guy, he offers some great tips, some may help if you're near that Spyder again

As for my PP skills, they ain't that good, but if you have that edit box ticked I may have a go:lol:

Okay having seen the last post of the original take .... I have to give due credit to Lynne for stretching her post processing techniques!!!! A defo improvement on the original!

True, Lynne's done a good job of taking out the showroom as there were plenty of things going on in the original.
I'm probably going all around the house here, but my point was/ is/ should have been go in close and avoid the problems.

Now someone take the spade out of my hand please.

Further info....I was using my 18-270 lens - just bought it & wanted to try it ! I was approx 2-3 ft away from the front of the car & sat on the floor
,maybe going right out to 18mm would have worked a bit better ( exif shows 30mm) but seem to recall I tried to lose the top n sides without sucess ....

on the upside.....the car is in our sister branch's showrom so a reshoot is def a possibility.....& if I try really hard I may be able to borrow their demo for a more picturesque shot :D

oh yeah...knock yourself out with an edit.....I can only learn

Hiya Lynne I quite like the 1st picture of the r8.

Hi Lynne,

I like the first shot a lot and I think it does convey the rapid theme with your post processing

After seeing the original shot I wouldn't even attempt to do the same.

Thanks Stan... ignorance of what can & can't be done is bliss sometimes:lol:

Hmmmm....lacking in pp skills I don't think so....

Rapid 1 for me is spot on for the theme.....well done...

Cheers Jeff...as said to DDDDDDDDDDDDawn...press some buttons & hope :D

R8_Spyder_NOT_MY_IMAGE by HaplessClicker, on Flickr

The background was difficult, looking at your edit I see you managed to get rid of it too.
I opted for making some new trees with the clone tool. They're not perfect, but sort of work.
The killer bit was the windscreen. I tried to add some trees here too instead of the signs and reflections, but had to rebuild the drivers head rest.

The halo around the right hand side I'm not happy with and I'd rather the window ledge wasn't there, but I wasn't sure how best to deal with that.
The ledge also helped keep the car in a showroom which is eveident by the reflections on the bonnet.
These were just too much, so I didn't bother touching them. But with less going on in the background and to the right they don't look as bad.

A play with levels I think has helped bring out some more detail in the front.

Overall I think your PP work got to the same place (bar the trees), but then you added the blur, which has helped mask the edges but IMHO was not needed.

You're a lucky lass getting another chance to go snap it.

Let me know if you want the image down.

Neil.....I could really go off you  love those tree's...really need to go on a training session for this type of stuff cos your version is more the sort of thing I'd originally wanted...understand the "words" of how you did it just can't get my headd round "how" to do it myself :'(

#1 is the best of the set. Regarding your PP...I tend to start of by going to the extreme...then I tend to pull back until I get the desired effect.

Of yours and Neil's edit, I prefer yours and it would be even better if you could get the black's Neil has.

Not an easy place to photograp with the lighting, etc.

I don't see rapid in Neil's edit, even though it is a fast (and superb car). It's static and I know by way of implications it's a rapid car.

Cheers.

BTW ordered a grip...to be delivered to work....Jackie's keeping an eye on me...:bat:

Lynne, IMHO, the fundamental problem(s) with this shot relating to the theme are:

1. PP filters can't save a bad photo. Ever. (When I say bad, I mean by being in a static showroom, there was no way it conveys movement like you are trying to show with the filter, NOT that it is badly photographed ;) )

2. The filter you have used gives the impression that the car is reversing very fast, as the blur lines are zooming out in front of the car. It's a small thing, but the brain does make those connections.

Sorry, but I think the starting photo and PP don’t work in this instance.

Sorry

Lynne... i have to say i'm with adie on this one...(don't try to mess with jpgs either..they just seem to look worse ...as i have found .. stoopid compression) ...

..that aside.. you could go laterally ... i posted this for my 52 ...and this for the Oktoberfest here ... my first hinted at speed, the second the reputation of speed (of rapid acceleration and being pushed through the back of your seat in less time for a mother in law to realise you've sugared her (yeah made that mistake too)) ...

i don't like front on shots... like faces, tend to look distorted, go for low and down the sides, get more angle to it..

the offices for maxpower were round this way...and i was realiably informed the guys would hang out of the windows as they sped down the dual carriageways to take moving shots... not avocating. but motion blur without using a filter..

No worries guys....Adie...thanks for the detailed comments...I agree with you completely.......but I still like it :p

Cheers Kev....I couldn't persuade anyone to take me for a drive to get that type of shot...but there's always next year

Weave 1 by llj666, on Flickr

Nice n boring...very old conservatory furniture...thinks it says "Weave "?

Staretd thinking last night ( after seeing Dawns tapestry )...many moons ago I used to enjoy doing cross stitch...found my storage box & a picture that never quite got finished....'tis a form of weaving....

Weave 2 by llj666, on Flickr

The 1st image is a close up of the claw area..the other shots serve to remind me I really should finish the project :D

Hiya babes,

Firstly, I am so blown away by your grasping the different techniques of photography over the past few weeks. You have really shown your strengths as a versatile photographer. Especially as the last few themes are out of your comfort zone .... yet you impress

With the first of the weave shots, I would say that the one on the left stands fine on its own as a single shot and is on theme. The right side is OOF, or should that be not in focus on the right spots. So I would have gone with a single shot for this one.

As for your 2nd Triptych .... well I have to say I love this one  The detail and progression is fantastic. My only slight crit would be to clone the little gold 'c' at the bottom right. There is also something happening at the upper right, perhaps a slight straighten might sort that out.

I would have also focused more on a crop of the eye of the dragon for the first shot to add to the progression through the series.

Other than that, after having met you .... I would not put you at a person to do cross stitch (must have been in one of your moments of madness )

Great ideas though!

Cheers

Dawn :)

Both your weave entries are on theme and really well done

My favourite? Your dragon shot. The three parts explain the piece well

Thanks Tina

Hi Hun

thanks for popping...especially as I'm playing catch up ! All the shots were taken with the tamron macro...still getting to grips with it & struggle to get the focus right sometimes...been practising with manual focus ( thanks for showing me how  )...getting there slowly ! Seems to be harder when shotting at an angle rather than straight on ?

The big dragon shot....still finding my way round picnik...the little gold bit bottom right & the purpley bit top right are part of the frame of stitch's....couldn't resize the triptych to get it all in...think this maybe another area you maybe able to help with ? Went for the claw close up as more detail in the threads ...still gotta finish the outline stiches rounds the left of his body including the eye .

If I can ever put the camera down I may just get round to finishing him...used to do lots of the stuff...have about 6 ready for framing & at least another 3 patterns to start :D

Glad you like it though....all harks back to Anne MaCaffrey & her excellent series:thumbs:

Hiya babes,

We need to organise a weekend or so where we can sit talking about cam/techniques/pp etc

Will be in contact with you regards same soon!

Cheers

Hi, weave #1, nice and literal, but #2 for me. Nice idea for a triptych and I'm glad you did them in that order. I'd like to see all the weave in the first panel in focus and I'm not sure about the border. Can't think what I'd prefer at the moment, though.

Oh had an idea (don't get 'em often) for your audi pic...

If you go to by the signs then take several portrait style shots of the tree line, stitch them together (autostitch?) and then you will have a clean line for the background. Shrink the panoramic down until its around the same as teh tree in the pic, use a mask to show the car through where you want it to show.

As to reflections borrow or buy a cpl filter to reduce/eliminate the reflections.

Keep up the great pics!

Hi

I think your weave shots are good. I'd go for either the of the first two images in each set... and just have single shots... If that makes sense?!?!

I've not done any macro photography for years used to do it on a pentax k1000 with a 50mm prime and extension tubes... and the focus was actually defo the hardest thing to get right. The one thing you really need to understand with it is depth of field! I tended to shoot 100% of macro off a tripod as that allowed me to shoot at f16. Also it gaurded against soft shots due to camera shake which when shooting so close in subjects even a very slight movement can soften edges. I always cused a cable release too. You mentioned shooting at the angle too... that is hard but just a function of needing more DOF. A macro lens is defo my next equipment purchase in the next year.

Keep at it though and great images.

As for your rapid shot... I like the edit in #644 best ... The car itself does all the speed suggestions the shot actually needs. Adie is right I dont think PP filters ever work to create an efect... they can enhance one but rarely can you use them to create effect that where never in the original shot. (in my opinion)
