Batten Down The Hatches (* * * Fresh Snow Warning Added * * *)

We got some at last

WooHoo..

Had some earlier that had settled, now its started again, its gonna get heavy about 3pm tomorrow afternoon, be great fun driving home from work on poxy biscuit tyres.

We had a good snow shower about 15:45 today (while me and Crusher were having a cuppa!!!)

Came down very hard for a few minutes, and was settling.
Didn't last long enough to build any snowmen :D

Just a shower at about 6pm, and there is hardly a covering on the car now. Damned cold though and the wind was just adding to the chill. Will be interesting to see if I wake up to anything more or if I am going to have to get over to the pennines to see anything significant.

I'm in the same sort of area as you and there is a bit coming down, looks like about 1/2" has settled so I'll see whats there in the morning!

Bring it on!

The whole country will be on it's backside after a dusting. We all seem to have that so it may as well hammer it down and give us some decent picture opportunities :D

Just got up for work and we have a "light dusting", shouldn't be too bad on the roads hopefully, those Snowdonia mountains are going to look stunning again though..trouble is getting to them

It smells like it might snow here.

It smells like it might snow here.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who comes out with that phrase! People look at me as if I'm mad when I say that but you can smell it in the air. :)

Yeah quiet a lot here, the very local roads here havent been gritted so are very slippy, wheel spin in 1st 2nd and 3rd gears with no acelerator kinda slippy in the van. Sent back home on standby for the rest of week for extreme emergancy work only due to a lack of resources, and nature of faults, and safety aspects as we work outside. Expecting 30-40mph winds later.

Just got back from the Livery Yard. Getting down the long winding driveway wasn't too bad but getting back up was extremely dicey. Even the yard owner had problems and he drives a Landrover Defender!!
The 4x4 owners are going to get caught out most - moreso the ones who have never actually driven off road (Not saying that your livery yard owner falls into that catagory though).
While 4x4's have more grip in general they can be harder to control when they do let go! Couple that with your typical 'Jeep for the school run cos it's safer' type of owner and metal will get bent!

Ah but that won't happen will it ? In adverse weather ie the recent snow
the schools get shut, the 4x4's stay warm and snug in the gararge :D

Agreed. Yes, our yard is also a farm, but there are those with 4 X 4s who will be lured with a false sense of security and will think they can drive as normal in these conditions! :bang:

The result of a successful forecast :D

Mind you, that was taken at my work place near Etchinghill (180 meters above sea level).
Folkestone at sea-level only had a brief flurry yesterday and a blink-and-you'd-miss-it type snowfall this morning before it turned to rain and stayed that way for the rest of the day.
And I think that concludes this thread as things slowly return to normal with sunny spells and wintry showers over the next couple of days.
It looks like Surrey recieved the worst of it where up to a foot thick level snow cover had settled down there.
Of course, it goes without saying that there is a huge risk of black ice and frozen slush on roads first thing in the morning as temperatures fall to as low as -5 C tonight.
There are subtle hints of an another wintry spell by the end of the week and into the week in the form of a northernly blast but confidence is low on that one at this point.

Spot on job of forecasting Ian, thanks for the very informative thread.
Shall keep my eye's peeled for the next one as you seem a bit more reliable:D:thumbs:

Well Ian, you were spot on mate, again!!

Yesterday morning was horrendous.
I work at an airport, and we were closed down due to the snow.
I spent 4 very long hours shovelling snow from the aircraft stands and walkways.

We have had the heaviest snow I think I have ever seen down here.
And it has just started again as I'm typing this. VERY HEAVY indeed. I've really not seen anything like it......

This shot was from about 0930 this morning:

Ian,
Just checked the met office and they are predicting a 'moderate risk' of an even greater snowfall in the south of England this Thurs and Fri. There is also a 'low risk' of 25cm or more!!!!

Do you concur kind sir?

It snowed pretty much all day here yesterday, and I was so excited about getting up today and going for a walk in the hills in all the snow ...

...but it's raining :(

Here's what it looked like as I typed that last post:

Clear blue skies now, not a snow flake in sight :cuckoo:

Ian,

Just wanted to say thanks for the trouble and effort you went to to keep us all informed. It's very appreciated!

:) Why, thank you. It's nice to feel appreciated.

Well, if I really want to be honest about it, I'm having mixed feelings about it. The potential's there for some prolonged snowfalls over England and Wales but not all the elements are there needed for it.
For a start, I'm not really happy with the "upper air" temperatures over the southern half of the UK for tomorrow, Thursday and Friday. It's a bit on the high side. The air at 5000 ft and higher (where cumulus clouds usually forms) needs to be below freezing in order to produce snow. Ground temperatures being at freezing or below won't count for anything if the air aloft remains above freezing.
Secondly, the low pressure center that will settle over the UK for the second half of this week actually originated from the Bay of Biscay, so it's got bits of mild air wrapped around it in any case.
So, all I'm really seeing is rain, freezing rain (when rain freezes on contact with a cold surface) and sleet with perhaps snow over the Pennines and Chilterns as we go towards the end of the week. Having said all that, it does look to be a bit on the wet side but I think the 25 cms snow predicted for parts of the UK is a bit overcooked.
BUT, having said that, the risk (I stress the word "risk" even though I really want to be as accurate as possible) is there, but confidence is a bit on the low side. Unless that low pressure system does decide to suck in some cold air from it's northern edge and turn the whole lot into snow. It does sound like I'm covering my ass, but I'm just not "feeling" it (the weather ahead, not my posterior!).
As we go into the weekend, my confidence is high for colder air to advance southwards to cover all parts of the UK as a northernly airstream takes over and clear away all this low pressure muck. Embedded in that cold northernly airsteam are "troughs" that will show up as narrow lines of "thundersnow". Those are sudden 20 minutes bursts of snowfalls, a bit like when we have sudden rain squalls in the summer. That will catch people out as they are very unpredictable things, you'd soon know about it when one of those crosses over your location.
But otherwise, it's really a case of plenty of winter sunshine and things staying cold with a widespread and hard frost by night.
Next week looks like seeing to a breakdown as the Atlantic begins to stir, but confidence is very low on this one.

Will have another look at my charts tomorrow and see if my confidence about the whole thing changes. It's really a case of keeping one eye on the forecasts and the other eye out through a window. :)

Managed to get a pic on telly tonight on ITV's local weather forecast. Sorry for the small size.

Thank you so much Ian!
What an informed and in depth report! Why cant all weathermen/women be as good as you?

Thanks again! I look forward to hearing more!

Leg-end!

Great work Ian as usual.

But M8 can't you predict some sunshine for a change?!!. We need something to brighten things up with all this economic doom and gloom!
