Batten Down The Hatches (* * * Fresh Snow Warning Added * * *)

lol ok thanks for the warning hopefully the beer scooter will protect me from being blown away :D

how strong will hte winds be when they hit blackpool

Easily gale force 50 mph by midnight, with 70 mph gusts (already doing that at Belfast Airport)

Incidentially, Belmullet had just recorded a 108 mph gust at 4 pm.

And there's strong warnings of thunderstorms tonight for Southern England, with possible slight tornado risk.

Just driven down the M60 from Oldham back to Stockport and it's already causing problems with driving the car in a straight line. Really buffetting the cars and lorries.

Hate to think what it's like over Thelwall Viaduct on the M6 at the moment

Its picking up here as well, just seen a few things flying down the road! Its not going to be a nice day tomorrow, and I was told we get protected from a lot of bad weather by the Pennines!!

im near exeter and its bad going to be some floods i think its lashing down and the wind is............................................................blowing a hooley.

In case anyone's interested it's b*!!&y windy up here. The roofs rattling like crazy and the floors are vibrating. My weather station at 8 ft from the ground is showing figures like 65mph and it doesn't transmit gusts! We live on the west coast of Skye and look directly down the barrel of where the stuff comes from.

It was a nightmare putting the hens to bed this evening. The rain stabbed you face like needles and the wind chill was nasty. We went out this afternoon and moved everything that was likely to become a missile and we are just hoping that we didn't miss anything. The power is hanging on by the skin of it's teeth. My UPS has been clicking in and out quite a bit. I walk around with a torch in my pocket at all times. The Sky dish is vibrating around too much to keep a good signal so the telly's not much help in calming the nerves.

If you come to the Isle of Skye be sure to come in the summer.

That does sound scary. Mind you, knowing me, I wouldn't mind visiting that part of the world just to experience that. :suspect: :D

Over here, right on cue, just as I've been saying to everyone around here, it's coming up to 9 pm and the wind had picked up considerably. It's not exactly "storm force" but enough to make my mum say "Oooh, it's a bit windy out there, luv".
And I could make out a "sting jet" forming just off to the South West of the UK. That had popped up in satelitte images in the past couple of hours. That usually signals the birth of a small bomb depression and usually only lasts a few hours.

Be safe for tonight, everyone.

My Fortins barometer says we are down to 72.14mm Hg now. What's the conversion to millibars?

Actually, I have to admit that you've got me stumped on that one as I've never heard of a Fortins Barometer. Something to google up at a later time.
But taking into account your location and from looking at my charts, I say that pressure at your area should be 966 mb right now.

But you would be interested to know that the very center of that low pressure that's causing all this rough weather is smack bang right over your location right now, so you're literally in the "eye of the storm".

Don't we know it. The wind is moving round to the west now so the pressure comes off the windows but the roof starts to ripple along its length and the tiles rattle something rotten. We depend on the 'wind map' at http://www.xcweather.co.uk/. It's really useful for up to the minute info. I don't know anything else that updates so often. The pressure charts are rubbish though.

A fascinating read, thanks, it's getting very blustery here now, I quite liked the week of -6 we had, at least it was sunny calm and dry

Ian, I reckon your storm's hitting us as we speak. It's blowing a chuffing hooly out there...and we're experiencing severe canine/feline precipitation :D

and its very windy here too......

eeek....how gross. Anyway....I thought you said yours dont smell?

moving swiftly on eh? LOL

We got it pretty bad here at the moment.
The 25 mile M27 journey home from work was, interesting :D

So why is it that Ian predicts the weather on two occasions, AND gets it right both times, while not yet have I seen a TV channel get it right :D

I must say I don't mind this weather - not while I'm safe and warm inside. At least the car is getting a free jet wash from the driving rain (gotta look for the positives)!

Mine's a soft top and it shouldn't be jet washed... :(

Hehe. T'is ok, she's gone to bed now. The chances of her reappearing are slim to none ;)
