If there's low light there's low light. In Av mode the camera will set the best shutter speed it can, for the other settings, and dialling any exposure compensation will affect the shutter speed further. So if the camera thinks that to get a properly exposed image at f1.8 it needs 3 seconds...

Ideally I think you need to pivot from the lens barrel rather than the camera, sure I had an article on this somewhere but can't seem to find it at the moment. Will post if I can find it. (Sorry - this isn't helpful really is it)......

They may be recoverable - Have you got a card reader ? Worth trying to read them in a card reader rather than the camera. Failing that, a format and some recovery software might also allow you to get them back (provided you don't take more photos once formatted).

Definitely a book, magazine or a newspaper - It's just not the same with the Kindle.......

I use mine on the Fifty, it's great. More recently, have also used them on a Tamron 17-55 f2.8. On both you end up practically on top of your subject to get focussed but still get some great results.
