Canon 600D Slight Build Quality Issue?

I've just got the Kiss X5 (Japanese version of 600D) and it feels very solid, no clicks or creaks at all. Mine is made in Japan.

    Lens pen

I've just watched the video on Amazon and it says that this is normal. The pad contains a carbon compound that will come off on your hand because it's not completely smooth, unlike a lens, or something like that. I might have to try mine out later! Never had a problem getting my lenses clean...

    Anyone spend crazy for xmas?

Over the past month or so I've gone through the following: Olympus EPL-1 Sony HXV9 Canon S95 Also got a very nice 40D from ebay with only 1300 actuations. I've sold the Pen and the Sony, plus my existing 450D, so just left with the S95 and 40D now. Oh yeah, and the TZ7 that I've been meaning...

    which compact for DSLR users?

I had an EPL-1 briefly and it did take decent quality pictures, but I didn't like the slow AF and the size. I have a DSLR so wanted a compact that would take good enough shots while still being able to fit in a pocket - the S95 fits the bill nicely.

    which compact for DSLR users?

I got the S95 last week after being underwhelmed by the Sony HX9V and so far very impressed! It does feel like a "proper" camera in a small body. Got mine from ebay for £181, it was a refurb but the only way I could tell was from the plain box and the US/UK adapter for the charger.

    New dSLR and first

Personally I'd go for the 600D because the swivelling screen would be useful, and it has better video options. Any camera is going to be superseded by a newer model but at least with the 600D it would stave off "upgrade-itis" for a bit longer! The 55-250mm is a decent lens IMHO. It's no L lens...

What photographically speaking would you like for Christmas?

Something that doesn't exist... I want a camera with the size and weight of a 450D but the AF system and burst rate of a 40D! I've got both at the moment and am torn as to which one to keep.

    Canon v sigma v ? Walkabout

I second the 18-135mm suggestion. Easily got for around £200 2nd hand and decent enough quality for the price. The range is pretty versatile so you could use it outdoors and indoors. Mine stays on my camera most of the time. Given the money I'd swap it for a 15-85mm but that's twice the price!

Canon 55-250 USM / IS II, what's the difference?

As far as I can tell, the only difference is the ring with the zoom markings. Silver on the old one, black for the new one. Either way, it's a decent lens for the price!

    Mid-range zoom lens recommendations

I had the Sigma 17-70 briefly and it was nice, but didn't seem much different to my Canon 18-135mm in terms of sharpness.

    Canon 550d lens help

The 55-250 is a good lens, but if you get tired of swapping/carrying two lenses, the 18-135 would be my choice. It costs a little bit more than the 55-250, and the picture quality is about the same. I have both and the 18-135 is what's on my camera 90% of the time.

    taking pics when wearing spectacles

    a) yes of course. All were pleasant, helpful and happy with their results. b) no, you have a choice whether you want to be contacted in future when you sign up for the procedure, so obviously they had all done this. BTW I'm aware that it isn't for everyone; it's something I'd been thinking...

Lowepro - Fastpack 250 OR RedSnapper CompuCam Backpack?

I have the Fastpack 250 and it's a decent bag. The quality is good and it has lots of room for all my kit. I haven't used the laptop compartment to carry a laptop as I'd imagine that would make it damn heavy when loaded with camera stuff too. It is useful for newspapers/magazines or an ipad though.

    taking pics when wearing spectacles

Actually I had very detailed stats when I had my consultation, including full info on the surgeon doing the op, and lots of graphs and pie charts showing their results for the last few years. They also give you the contact numbers for 5 people who have had the treatment and were a similar...
