    Focusing

Sorry to be late in responding, thanks for that Phil, it was a very informal set up so lots of people at varying distances from the camera, fortunately a good bright day so f8 gave plenty of DoF and I managed to keep most people in focus (where intended). Cheers

    Focusing

Phil, I am interested in your reply as I have been roped in to shoot some outside shots at a christening, why do you recommend focusing on the nearest eyes and then getting sufficient DOF to cover those behind? As I understood it the 'acceptable focus' area includes a third in front of the focus...

    compact flash adaptors

Yes but they're horribly, horribly slow, if you just want to do landscape then they'd probably be ok, but then if you're not shooting reams of frames you're unlikely to need the extra space :)

    40d is dead

How long did you leave all the batteries out for, give it at least 30 minutes and try again.

    Image file naming enigma

You've set the colour space to AdobeRGB as opposed to sRGB, this is what Canon does to identify between the two. Unless you use Adobe calibrated monitors and printers it's not a great idea to use AdobeRGB anyway.

Does anyone have yesterday's 'I' newspaper?

Was it only in the I and not the full Independent 'cos I've got that :)

    Focusing Question

On the first picture how far away were you as you/we need to know this to get a reasonable estimate on DOF, I see you were using f7.1 at 1/50 at 154mm ISO 100, I don't know if your 70-300 has IS but that shutter speed is too low for objects which can move at any moment so that's not going to be...

    canon 600d "auto bracketing" question

You have to set the drive mode to multiple shots, sounds as if you're just on single frame mode, either that or you have mirror lock up enabled.

    Noob Errors

Well I'd say you missed focus on the bird, the large leaves to the right and in front seem to be more in focus, were you letting the camera choose the focus point? In addition 125 is too slow for small birds and unless your lens has stabilization it's too slow to handhold at 200mm (unless you're...

    Good rain covers for 7D & 5DMkII

I bought one of These which is a copy of the original Canon item but only a quarter of the price. Works well, the clear window steams up but a little anti-fog (Rain X etc.) cured that. Just seen that it's out of stock at Amazon but there were plenty of other places stocking it.

    micro sd to CF adaptors

Never seen a micro SD to CF adaptor, I have an SD to CF one and it is very slow, ok for jpegs on single shot but can't keep up with RAW or burst mode in my 7D and video is a no-no. Ask yourself if you really need 32GB cards, apart from price, if one goes bad that's a lot of data lost.

    Serious frustration!!

You're going to have to post examples for anyone to be able to comment with any degree of confidence, could be a range of things.

    Lens Hoods

According to the Tamron website =&tx_keproducts_pi6[vc]=false&tx_keproducts_pi6[sp]=false"]HERE it's the DA09, a quick search brings up several suppliers but it does seem to be an 'order only' item.

    On tripod = VR off

The more modern Canon lenses (70-200 etc) sense when they are on a tripod and switch the image stabilization off, however my 100-400 doesn't so I get into the habit of manually switching it off for all of them to save remembering which one is which.

How to improve on Sunset photo

Yeah, I wasn't suggesting that the rule of thirds be applied rigorously but that it's a good starting guideline, especially for such shots where there is one point which will always draw the eye.
