Hi,

Can anyone shed some light (no pun intended) on which type of lens hood is more effective: the petal type or the full cone type.

I've heard the flower petal type described as 'less than useless' and 'purely for aesthetic purposes' on a few different discussion websites and was just after some insight into which works more effectively.

Depends on the lens, a proper cone offers the most protection but also the most likely to vignette, especially if you have a zoom lens where it will be unable to provide the same protection at all settings. Petal hoods are designed to remove vignetting, but at the same time the removal of the corners means a greater chance of lens flare from that angle.

Go with the manufacturer's one for the lens and you'll be fine.
 
As above, use the lens hood specifically for the model of lens

It's the Tamron SP AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR DI LD ASPHERICAL II.

Could someone possible point me in the right direction before I have to make one out of cardboard and sellotape :)

According to the Tamron website HERE it's the DA09, a quick search brings up several suppliers but it does seem to be an 'order only' item.
