Another vote here for the Siggy 12-24. Also, I'm a big fan of the Canon 85mm f/1.8 USM - great on a crop body as a short, fast telephoto for indoor work (I used one a lot for theatre work).

40D from 400D is a great and worthwhile upgrade - I convinced myself to do it on the strength of the high-ISO performance alone; that said, the handling (big hands didn't really suit the 400D to be honest) and build quality were big plus-points.
