hey peeps, looking to buy a 40d, how good are these bodies? i see there the same mp as my 400d, does this mean the shots from a 40d are the same quality as the 400d, or does the 40d produce better images?

Thanks :bonk:

not sure about the image quality but the 40D is a very nice bit of kit. Solid build, good AF, good FPS, it's definitely a step up in build quality.

The 40D is a very high quality camera, both in terms of build and image quality. It is quite a step upwards from the 400D.

i'd say go for it. i have one and its a nice solid piece of kit. plus i'm sure they're good value used now.

Image quality is similar. Not much else is though.

i second that. its more the increased usability you're paying for.

At higher ISOs, the 40D is a little better as well but the main difference I noticed when switching the very same cameras, was the thumbwheel which is far quicker when selecting AF points etc. for wildlife subjects

Other than that, I echo what the others have said :)

How about a 50D? I'm interested in one as an upgrade from my 450D especially cos of the lens microadjustment feature, and better ISO range, maybe wait until next year for the 50D replacement?

40D is a great camera
if you're on a budget you can't go wrong.

functionality, build, options, etc all much nicer on the 40D. but it uses CF cards. does the 400D use SD?

50D? has some features I'd like on my 40D but I'm in no hurry to replace.
after the 50D? I'm hoping the 60D is more of the same but with less MP and nicer ISO ability.....
where is the Canon fairy when you need her?

if you can't stretch to the 50D, 40D is deffo a big step up

40D from 400D is a great and worthwhile upgrade - I convinced myself to do it on the strength of the high-ISO performance alone; that said, the handling (big hands didn't really suit the 400D to be honest) and build quality were big plus-points. Also, the increased bit-depth of the RAW files off a 40D give you more to play with in Photoshop/Lightroom/(insert software of choice).

I have a 40D and I have to say that I found that the 400D / 450D felt a bit like toys by comparison in terms of build quality! I think I would pick a used 40D over a new 450D.

Are you carrying lenses over from your 400D or will you be using the 40D kit len (17-85 I think)?

In the unlikely event that there is anything wrong with the focusing of your lenses, get them properly calibrated by the manufacturer. Should be done free under warranty.

50D is pretty much the same price as the 40D at the moment. see www.camerpricebuster.com for price comparisons.

I have recently upgraded to the 40D from a 350D. The difference is massive! I love my 40D and am really pleased i made the jump. Now i just need to continue to build up my lens collection!!

The reason i didnt go for the 50D was that it was a lot more than the 40D when i upgraded and there were too many negative reviews on noise issues. So i went with the highly acclaimed 40D. Its brilliant!!!

I just switched to a 40D from Sony, and aside from that slight dirty feeling of switching brands, it's been great so far. The biggest surprise for me was the "feel", the 40D is a very well made camera.

Buy a mint second hand one with a low shutter count, I doubt you'll go far wrong.....!

Ive been offered a 40d with a shutter count of 5000, plus extra's for the sum of £385..... DEAL OR NO DEAL........

Depends what extras..........?! :p

A 40D is worth every penny of £385, and 5000 clicks is only 5% of the expected 100,000 life of the shutter......

Sounds a good'un!

Buy! I've got one, and before I had the 400D. Love my 40D to bits, nicer to use in every way.

Loving all the posts in this thread.
I sold my 1000d last week for €30 more than i paid for it and bought used 40d off hsuffyan. Only 7989 clicks and should be here tomorrow :D

Hi
The 40D is a very good camera, the FPS and AF are excellent and the build and feel are a major step up.
I had one for 2 years and some of my best shots were taken with it.
