I think it is a fair question which doesn't warrant ridicule.

Belgium has three official languages; Dutch, French and German. They actually do not have their own language.

As I understand it from Belgian friends, a fairly extreme dialect of both though - understandable to French or Dutch in the same way as many Scandinavians understand their neighbours.

Nah, much much closer than that. Yes you can distinguish it undoubtedly but more like Geordie vs cockney. If anything it is an older purer form if you like. Flemish normally win the spelling competition with the Dutch. :)
