what time

We have a 6 year old so tend to eat between 17:30 and 18:00

Depends on te time of year. Because we have the horse, we tend to eat a little later than the norm. In Winter, the horse is sorted reasonably early so we try to get dinner on the table for about 7. In he summer, Sue will take advantage of the light evenings and often go for a ack so we tend to eat later.

in the winter we tend to eat about 7pm in the summer anytime after that... daughter today was shocked to have dinner at 6pm (my fault didn't look at clock).. moaned non stop it was too early..

If our little one was staying with the in-laws we would eat around 19:30 or just after

Don't talk to me about horses making me go hungry.. :(

To answer the original question anywhere between 18:45 (maybe earlier at weekends) and 21:30 (latest if she's out riding/teaching riding till late in the summer).

This time of year between 8 and 9. The rest of the year, anytime from 9 onwards.

[semantics] Dinner is the biggest meal of the day rather than the evening meal! [/semantics]

It depends here. Two evenings a week, my wife doesn't get home until 8:45pm, so we don't usually eat much before 9. 3 mornings per week, she heads out at 6:30am so I'm starving by noon and again at 6pm! Luckily, on two of those early stary days, she gets mome at about 5:30pm so we can eat relatively early (7 to half past) but on thursdays (early start and late finish) I usually have to have a little snack mid/late afternoon.

WRT post #4, easy answer - bin hers and tell her to sort her own out at her convenience! She has to learn that she's NOT the centre of the universe and that you're not her personal slave/bank/whatever!

funny that i think i remember something like that coming out of my mouth.

Another reason i asked is allot of people i know "in the real world" just don't understand how i can eat so late.

Before I moved south, it was always 'tea' and we ate about 5-30 - 6, which was what I was brought up with, but these days its 'dinner' and depending on our schedules, can be any time between 7 and 9pm, if its later than that, I prefer to call it 'supper' so I dont feel as bad about eating so late :D

It varies wildly because of hubs working hours. This evening for instance, it will be gone 9pm by the time we eat.

When the wife and little one are away I just eat when I am hungry

Pleb!

Tea is at 4 pm and is a cuppa, possible with some cucumber sarnies (crusts removed, natch!). High tea is a little later, 6pm or so and can be anything. Supper is little more than an amuse bouche shortly before bed-time. :p

I tend to have the dinner ready for myself and mother at around 3 pm to 5 pm most days. Just that I don't like the way food is still "sitting" in the stomach when I get into bed if I eat later on the evening as that would then cause me to wake up in the middle of the night feeling bloaty and sweaty.
Besides, once I've done and had the dinner then it leaves me with the rest of the day to relax and if I do get peckish in the evening then I'll munch on a packet of crisps or cheese on biscuit.

I'm a grazer rather than dinner tea etc but I do sit down to eat at five with the wife.

On early shifts, dinner is anytime between 5 and 6:30. Later, if I'm still hungry, a bowl of cornflakes at 7:30. On late shifts dinner is at 4pm then again at around 7pm after the gym during my break. I never eat after 8pm.

You're a Hobbit. Hobbits eat at least seven meals known as breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner and supper.

Eating smaller meals through out the day is the healthy way to eat. It gives the body time to digest what it needs and doesn't need to store anything which will likely turn to fat.

Dinner! if only.....

Our household is chaos, two self employed adults, dogs, horses, nothing seems to happen when it should around here, annoys the **** out of me!

Anyway, if I had the choice, I'd have a big lunch and a tea time snack, much better for you :)

Indeed....IF they're small. I know him

6-7pm typically, I don't like to go to bed while still full, which is why I get annoyed with evening meetings in restaurants where we meet at 8 and don't end up eating until gone 9.

You can eat at 3-5pm and not feel hungry for the rest of the day?!

We have dinner in my house at 7pm, and I'll usually have a sandwich or something around 9pm because I hate being hungry in bed!

surprised at the number of people who eat so late, 9pm!! thats crazy.

granted if its a meal out or a curry takeaway etc then I will eat that late but regular eating time has to be before 6pm surely. I thought it was really unhealthy to eat late at night?

A lot of it is down to other time constraints. Most days, I don't get home fro work until 6pm. My wife works in Central London and has to go and bring in and feed the horse so 7pm is the very earliest we can eat but it is often later as I really don't want to start preparing dinner as soon as I walk in the door.

As far as a healthy time to eat is concerned, I think that may depend on what time you go to bed. For us, it's around 11:30.

Well Joe, husband started work at 9am this morning, and will not finish until 9pm this evening. He will not get the opportunity to eat anything but a snack during the day, so what else can he /we do? I eat with him when I can because it's time we get to talk, but as my habits have to be a tad more structured that's not always possible.

8pm I can't believe how late some of you are eating. I'm onto supper by then!:) 5-5.30 here.

Weekdays, between 8 - 10pm, usually about 9pm.

At the weekends we try and eat with the kids so about 5-6pm.

5-5.30 here.

Blimey, I'd be lucky to be cleared up after lunch by then

But we eat our main meal of the day at lunch time.

This time of year, dinner would be between 8.00 pm and 9.00 pm (ish) and in the summer usually after 9.00pm. If eating dinner out with Spanishers then we probably wouldn't sit down to dinner untill about 10.00pm at the earliest.

In fact, I remember a few years ago when the girlies were about 5 and 7 leaving the house at 10.30 pm to go out for dinner, chuckling at the thought that if I was in the UK the net cutains would be twitching and people would be wondering what on earth I was doing out with the kids so late at night

I guess it is a sign of the times that the main meal with the family takes a second seat to other priorities in our lives. It's a shame that we have lost that identity.

If my life meant I couldn't eat till that late I would seriously have to make a change somewhere, which would probably be to eat a larger lunch and just have a sandwich in the evening or something. I couldn't be eating at 9pm and if I was in my bed at 11.30pm every night, way to close to bed time. Once in a while I will on a takeaway night or a meal out but couldn't do it regularly.

Well I suppose no having kids makes it a little easier but, when I was a kid, both my parents worked. My dad was freelance so had anything up to a 2 hour journey each way and my mum worked in Central London so we would all eat together at around 7:30 so I guess i've been used to it for a very long time. Sue, however, is from a family that used to have "tea" by 6pm but she couldn't eat that early now.

I've never had a regular regime, but try to avoid eating a dinner after 8pm

Dinner at 7 has always been when my family sit together and eat. If it was up to me it'd be later but the parents like it at 7, and they pay for the food so who am I to argue?

I'm sure people saying they couldn't eat at x time is just habit.

unfortunately without working there wouldnt be food to put on the table..

100% agree. Currently our priority is paying bills and keeping the house, therefore we work long hours. We're "lucky" to have no children and so have only ourselves to please.

Same here, my hubs is a doc so we never know what time we'll eat.

It's cultural. People dine later here when it's cooler. Also working hours are different, taking into account the afternoon siesta.
