WAMT....what annoyed me today!

A few years ago I had a heated discussion with a doctor at Uxbridge hospital. It all started because I'd turned up for a scan, and the appoinment had been canceled. The receptionist at the desk suggested I go to the department that had organised the scan. Turns out it's because they used 2 different databases, and they just raised it on the wrong one. Now me, being in IT sales at the time, remarked "That's stupid, I'm sure you can get the data from the two systems onto one". Oh we were told that would cost £500k to get done..... I said I could have 2 DBA's down there within a week , and probably get it done for around £100k tops.

Oh, but it's outsourced, you'd have to go through our IT partner. Yeah, let's rip off the NHS and all get rich.... Again, total mismanagement.

Things must have gone downhill since I was doing IT for hospitals, about fifteen years ago, now.

The three hospitals I was sent into, to do some specialised database development, all had very good IT departments with good or very good staff. They only brought in people like me to work on stuff that was new to them but which they expected to have handed over, along with a skills transfer, on completion. It's very sad if they've really lost those skills.
 
WAMT..and every day at 11.30am is b****y rap music for those in the hotel pool doing aerobics. How about ABBA ?
 
IT specialists made redundant to cut costs and require to rehired in their new business project?

I don't see how you can blame Barnsley Council for drivers ignoring a traffic sign. More importantly you are blaming the wrong council, unless of course Barnsley begins with "W".

Regardless of what council it is and assuming what the poster says is accurate don't you see a problem with traffic coming from two different directions both having priority?

You miss the point, Both directions have the same sign. Both saying they have priority.

You cannot blame the council for the fact that drivers ignore road traffic signs. And that is something that is NOT unique to Haigh Lane. Vehicles travelling uphill have priority over the oncoming vehicles at the railway bridge. The signage on BOTH sides of the bridge clearly and correctly displays this. Haigh Lane is part of Wakefield Council and NOT Barnsley Council. If you have any proof to the contrary please post it. The boundary between Barnsley and Wakefield is the river Dearne - Wakefield to the North and Barnsley to the South.
 
Regardless of whose responsibility it is maybe the two clowncils should get together and sort it out.

I will reply, against my better judgment. I accept it could come under Wakefield, not that it matters.

The google map you posted as 'evidence' of your childish 'gotcha' is 2 + 1/2 years out of date. The site looks nothing like that now, it's been completely reworked, with new speed calming measures.
As part of this they have replaced the priority signs with the new oblong ones, instead of those old round ones shown in your silly map screenshot.. What date it was done I have no idea.
What I do know is that for at least part of one day they were incorrect. They may have been rectified quickly, the same day, or not at all, for all I know.
I haven't checked, for a couple of reasons.
1. It's a 30 mile round trip.
2. I don't care.

Now go and play.

Ok, so it is my understanding there is a right of way sign at each side of the narrow road section causing problems, or have read the posts incorrectly?

There was on the last occasion I went through. He's just doesn't believe it.
Why? I have no idea, just trolling I think.
 
I sent some lenses to a dealer, they made acceptable offers for some and I got the others back. All this was fair enough but they said that the front section had come off one lens and it'd cost too much to repair. This disappointed me as I thought it was a nice lens and couldn't really understand how it had come apart. Anyway, when I got it back I found that it hadn't really come apart, what had happened was the ring on the front of the lens which carries the lettering had come off. This is a non structural cosmetic piece which carries the lettering and covers the screws underneath. It had been held in place by three spots of glue which I assume had dried out over the years. So, I took it into the kitchen, opened a drawer and took a tube of glue out and applied three spots to the ring and put it back in place. This repair took about two minutes and cost me three spots of glue.
 
@Eucris @Cockney Stop it. One of you lives locally, the other passes through. I think I know who is most likely to be right. Either way I don't care, it's the way you behave on TP that I'm concerned about. Consequently a warning has been issued

I don't know if this sort of thing annoys or baffles me but it probably annoys me more as if it all goes wrong I'd have to live with it.

Today I was doing 70mph in a 70 limit, in the RHL. I'd previously seen two guys on what looked to be quite old motorbikes when they overtook me in a 50mph limit and I saw that they were now behind a lorry in the LHL but they showed no sign of wanting to overtake so at 70mph I I decided to carry on. The lead guy pulled out without indicating or looking and at this point I eased off expecting idiocy and I was right as the second guy did the same at what looked to be about 3m in front of my car. If I hadn't already eased off expecting idiocy I don't know if he'd have seen me. It was pointless hitting the horn but I did it anyway not that he noticed or cared.

I'm past worrying about people like this. I'd feel for their families and for myself but that's where it stops and Darwin can take over. Another thought that crossed my mind is if I'd hit him my car might have been written off and I'd get less than replacement value. Why should I or anyone else be out of pocket and faced with hassle and trauma as a result of these numb heads? Sorry if this reads as unchristian, I'm worn down after seeing too much stupidity from people like this.
 
WAMT: tourists in the Highlands completely oblivious to anyone behind them. As I go to overtake a car and caravan, accelerating nicely, just as I'm alongside the tail of the caravan they start to pull out without looking. Had to slam on anchors very hard, at least I was on the ball and the brakes work remarkably well. They see my lights on beam - easier to hit than the horn, and wobble back in.

And a general rant... It seems so many people leave their brains behind when they visit. Pootling along a decent trunk road looking at the scenery, a queue growing behind them and they sail past lay-bys. Forget them using passing places on single track to let anyone behind get on their way. Or indeed having much idea of how passing places work at all. I've had some look at me utterly bewildered as to what they should do. Yeah, more than once I've had to reverse 100 yards because they couldn't reverse 10. And... chill.
 
My parcel - due for a FedEx collection today - is still here. :(

I was once driving a coach over Kirkstone Pass in the Lake District and on a twisty bit met a car coming the other way and there wasn't enough room to pass on the bend..... the lady driver sat there making gestures for me to reverse..... Since I couldn't see clearly behind due to the bends in the road I refused to move and gestured for her to reverse..... Eventually she did start reversing but she was all over the road in her efforts to reverse to a straight bit where she could safely let me through.....
 
Oh yes, I know Kirkstone. Lol at the reversing! yes, I've seen that too. How hard is it to figure little inputs go a long way.

We had something similar end of last year, speed limit going from 50 to 70 and first biker took off but well in front of us so plenty of room, second biker then changed lanes by moving right and hit my car in the passenger door, fortunately he stayed upright and we got together upright, we got together on the hard shoulder were a witness from behind joined in-yay-biker wisely kept his helmet on or my wife might have treated him to a slap or two. When I called my insurance to report accident I was told ALL cars bike accidents are considered to be the fault of the car! regardless of situation. Fortunately having a witness and an on the ball contact at my insurance company it went in my favour, we did have to threaten going to court to get payout from bikers insurance though. Always get a note signed by the guilty party admitting fault, don’t know if it helped but couldn’t have done any harm.

Reminds me of my sister in law
She lives up a quite narrow road, one day she met the bin lorry and rather than the lorry reverse the 10 yards or so the lorry driver insisted she reversed much further which she did though not happy.
Next time they met the same bin lorry driver was gesturing her to reverse again but, being a bit feisty, she got the kids out of the car, locked the car and started to walk past the bin lorry. The driver asked her what she was doing and she replied that she lived only a hundred yards up the road and would walk. The bin lorry driver told her she was a mad woman but then reversed. :)

The blame thing is always on my mind and given the chance I'm sure a fair few bikers will just not stop. I've heard many horror stories of people being stuck with big bills through idiot bikers who drive off or make a run for it and also cyclists too. These days I tend to drive assuming that there are idiots on the road but it's difficult to imagine why bikers, motorbike and cyclists, don't do the same as they are much more at risk. I suppose the chance to do whatever you want and have consequence free fun even if that means behaving like an idiot who could be killed is just can't be resisted.

I know we see stupidity and carelessness all the time but those idiots on the bikes were the worst I'd seen for a few weeks. It was only me thinking about the possibility and easing off that stopped him turning into me and of course one way or another or even all ways it'd be me who paid the price.

I did ride a bike for many years and I never did what I see bike riders do way too often. Making mistakes is one thing but acting as if you haven't got a brain and not seeming to realise that what you do could kill you is another.

I did bike, not now, lad that hit us admitted he didn’t look, his pal went for the overtake and he decided to go a few seconds later without the all important look over the shoulder, most important when you’re doing 50 in a 70 motorway, it could have disaster if he’d come off the bike on a busy m/way.

My door mirrors are set up correctly but I always glance over my shoulder in a merge.

If you made it an obvious movement it also makes those around you aware that you are going to make a move, hopefully when safe.

I did my Direct Access whilst living in London and I loved my biking days, but some drivers (cages lol) were insane. Although to be fair some bikers were bonkers as well! lol

One of the most memorable was the car driver who started coming across the lanes towards me in my outer lane (which was a merging/continuation lane). I was ultimately going to be crushed into the concrete barrier to my right and had nowhere else to go. The scary part was that she was looking at me the whole time, literally eyes locked on me right up to the point that she had crossed into my lane.

It wasn't until I pointed at my helmet cam that she suddenly moved back to the left. It gave me the impression that she didn't care about potentially killing me, but did care about being filmed doing so. Some scary people out there.
