WAMT....what annoyed me today!

H should be pronounced as haitch, not 'aitch, although it can have either a soft or hard her depending on the word. This isn't france, where the H is often silent. Tell you what - I'll put up with you pronouncing it your way and you can tolerate me doing it in mine. ;)
Never found the need to pronounce the letter H or anything starting TH either
Surely that's what the letters A and F are for?
A colleague at work came from up norf and we took the pee out of each others accents.
My mentioning of the elf food shop never failed to amuse her.

I recall asking someone from your neck of the woods what his surname was and he said Smiff. He looked bemused when I asked him...... "is that with one 'F' or two?"

Just looking on Amazon for some new sandals and this was under the sizes options
"7 UK is your recommended size based on millions of customer orders"
Fat lot of good to me because I take a UK 11
One of the most idiotic things i've seen for a while, not really annoyed, more bemused.

I had a blood test yesterday at my local hospital. Today I was asked to do a survey, the second question was "how likely am I to recommend their service to friends" I responded saying I thought the question wasn't really relevant, as I can't chose anywhere else to have blood test nearby.

We had a knock on the door today by a couple of fellows offering to clean our roof (house+garage) for £1800. Their vehicle was an overseas registration. There was a great deal
of to and fro conversation and eventually he offered to do it there and then for £800 and I could pay next month, they even gave me a quick demo on the corner of the garage roof.
They also gave me a leaflet and kept insisting that they were a registered company.
This didn't sound kosher to me, why give a price initially and reduce it massively? In the end they pretty much stormed off not very happy with me.

I must admit this whole episode quite unnerved me, I'd like some other views on this situation, what particularly got me was just how quickly the price
came down!

Many industries work on inflated prices then come down to make you think you are getting a good deal. In some cases it’s genuine as they may genuinely have free time so something is better than nothing.

But normally it’s just a sales tactic. In this case it would be travellers and should not be touched with a barge pole.

They will always come down quite a lot when you say no. We had a couple of blokes call at the house offering to do the same type work. My wife tells me to just say 'no thanks'. She's far more amenable to deal with on the doorstep than I am..lol. Anyway, I told the lad, he was about about 20 years old ,that when I want a job doing I don't have it done because someone knocks on the door offering to do it and I don't have jobs done by anyone who comes door-knocking, anyway. He didn't take too kindly to this and as he turned to go up the drive told me 'F-off.' The next day, to my dismay, I saw that young man on the garage roof of the house behind...bottom of our garden but to the left . It's a cul-de-sac behind us. What he did was to get on the roof with a high pressure hose and blast the tiles. As you may know, roof tiles are coated with a textured surface for weatherproofing and durability and a high-pressure hose blast will strip it off. The grit and dirt went all over the place including onto our fence and back lawn and it also went all over the adjacent side of our neighbour's house and their conservatory roof. I have to say that my neighbour tries to get everything done on the cheap. Needless to say, they left the job without washing it all down. Infact, I offered to do the conservatory roof as it was not easy for my neighbour to access all of it . I did, infact do that and got a box of biscuits for my trouble..Lol. When I went round to see him shortly afterwards, to give him the name of the brothers we have who do our gutters and downpipes each year, he wanted his doing, he pointed out that these two herberts had high pressure-hosed his drive, too. The garage roof cost £200 and the drive..£250. The road outside his house is the turning circle of the cul-de-sac and guess what ? It was covered in the grit and dirt from the drive. He was going to hose it down.

The roof looked awful...still does. It's now 'raw beige'. It has an apex, so sloped both sides. I suggested to him that he should never give work to people like that who cold-call. They were probably travellers who, as we know, rarely travel other than round local neighbourhoods ripping people off, especially the elderly and vulnerable. Get recommended local workmen.

Just as a post-script. The neighbour asked me who does our gutters because he wants his done at the back...which faces us. I told him, we have our gutters and downpipes cleaned each year by them (brother)and they are are excellent and trustworthy and we recommend them to people who have actually had them do jobs and are now on their books for annual visits. That neighbour behind did have the gutter done but by someone-else. Fair enough BUT..the gutter front needed cleaning and the young man had actually cleaned a third of it and I shouted up..no too loudly..lol.."Nice to see the gutter front being cleaned. He shouted back..also not too loudly, that my neighour had just told him not to clean the gutter front just the inside of the gutter. It was to save money..he won't pay said the lad. Hard to believe, really. So, the lad stopped. One third is clean ,the rest is still dirty. Not long after I was talking to my neighbour over the fence and he said they'd just got back from a holiday in Dubai. Was it good,I asked ? Yes, but quite expensive and he said they'd been a few times. He then went on to tell me his wife was up north visiting her parents and an elderly driver had come out of a side road and crashed into their car and it was going to be expensive to fix it.. paid for .by the other party's insurance ,of course. I commiserated with him saying it was a pity as it was a lovely 5-Series BMW. No..they'd changed it. It was an E -Class 350 Mercedes..Lol.I suppose you can afford holidays like that and cars like that if you don't have to pay for the gutters to be cleaned as well as cleared..Lol.

People can be very strange, can't they...

What's wrong with you folks?. This was not a genuine negotiating technique, it was scammers.

I would describe that as 'knowing the cost of everything but the value of nothing'.

We don't buy anything 'at the door' and as much as possible rely on neighbour recommendations.

It's not only dodgy blokes who deal like this. Some years ago, a very well known (and expensive) double glazing company gave us a quote and offered a 50% discount if we signed up there and then. Took a threat to call the police on him to get him out of the door and a call to the company complaining about his behaviour followed.

I could smell smoke this afternoon and when I looked towards the local hill it was blanketed in smoke. This evening the smoke has cleared and I can see three separate fires. I haven't heard any sirens but I don't know how they'd get a fire engine up there anyway so I expect they'll be left to just burn out. Mrs WW was amazed and asked why there weren't helicopters putting the fire out, well, maybe because parts of the UK are poorer than your average third world country and we just don't have any fire fighting helicopters.

So I have two annoyances, the political uniclass who seem to be hell bent on ruining the country and whatever idiot set the fires. If the cops could catch them and if the courts would be interested in putting them away I'd say lock them up for life as they're either too bad or too mad to be loose in society.

I used to love going up the hills but it's pretty much a no go area now, just full of balaclava wearing types on off road bikes and quads who will do their best to intimidate. They're up and down our road several times a day with complete impunity. The times when I'm embarrassed for my country are now outnumbering the times Mrs WW is embarrassed for hers.

Years ago, I once ordered workmen out and their reply was amazingly "We don't work for you." My reply was that I was the one holding a hammer and they had to leave very quickly but my language was more colourful. I don't know if I would have and I suppose they could have called the police but I think what was in my mind was that I'd asked them to leave and they wouldn't. I don't know what planet some people are on.

Guess that's Eston Hills Alan, a favourite haunt of mine as a lad in the 50's and 60's. As a teenager used to hike from Eston over to Roseberry Topping, stopping off for a drink at the Cross Keys on the Guisborough Road.

Yes. Parts of it have been just ruined by the bikes and quads. Mrs WW now refuses to go and has banned me off going by myself.

PS.
Just looked and they're still burning.

Presumably you called the fire brigade?

Looks like Universal Studios has the go ahead to build a theme park less than 5 miles from my front door :-(
But think of those 28 thousand jobs it's going to create ... :exit:

I have a pine bedside table. On that table is a Lumie light/sunrise/sunset alarm. The Lumie has buttons on the front for many adjustments. I push several of these every night.
My dear wife, who I love nearly as much as the Lumie, has what can only be described as a dusting fetish.
This time she decided to dust and mr sheen my bedside table. It is now so slippery that instead of registering the command, pushing buttons only slides the Lumie along the table. Adjusting the Lumie is now a 2 handed job.
Is this grounds for divorce?

BluTak or similar should stop the creep!

Leighton Buzzard, but mum lived in Bedford until she passed away in December. We're currently in the process of selling her house, but I attend the MS Therapy Centre in Bedford every week. Wondering how busy the A421 will get.
Ah b****r sorry to hear about your mum.

Re the A421, that's exactly my worry, I live in kempston and work in Luton, so the A421's a bit of a lifeline. Im sure that there will be little change in actual road infrastructure until 12 months pre opening of the park so next 4 or so years likely to be a nightmare :-(

Our local Dr Surgery.

Mrs WW is like me vegi but possibly not doing as well as me as she often lacks energy plus anaemia seems to run in her family so off we went for medicals and her haemoglobin is "borderline." That may or may not be a serious thing in itself but coupled to being vegi and lacking energy and family members having health issues makes us think she needs further investigation and possibly advice about her diet.

I rang the locals this AM and surprisingly we got her an appointment for this AM. Wonderful. Within half an hour she received confirmation via text msg and then cancellation as her blood results were "normal" and there was no one available to see her anyway. So, I rang up to remake the appointment because of our concerns and the receptionist bent over backwards to not give her an appointment. I ended up saying she was making me feel like I was begging for an appointment for my wife which was exactly how it felt. Mrs WW possibly because of her far eastern respectful upbringing doesn't want to put anyone out and she became increasingly distressed to the point of tears and we had to end the begging call.

I'm upset and also raging. We shouldn't have to plead for an appointment to see a Dr. I have mixed feelings on complaining as in reality what's the point? No procedures will be changed and nothing will be done also Mrs WW is terrified that they'll treat her differently if we create a fuss. As I said to Mrs WW, "What if you die because you don't want to be a bother?"

I asked her if she'd go private and she not keen and instead she'll go to the Dr when she's in Thailand later this year.

My old dad would have done that. One car and he would go and park next to it, I never understood why.

It is easier to reverse into a spare space between 1/2 car, sometimes the lines are not that good.

Maybe, but this was simply ignoring 100 spaces and driving up next to the only other car, and parking.

Mum had a stairlift fitted last September. Sadly, it was only 2 months later she went into a home.

We're now looking to get it removed as we have a buyer for the house. webyanystairlift have offered £175! It cost £4,000!
A customer of mine had a similar experience. His wife was in hospital and they were told she'd need a stairlift when she came out. So he had one fitted. Sadly she never came out.
The stairlift had never been used.
Stannah said they couldnt do anything with it as they"re all custom made.
It was dead straight.

From time to time, this comes up in this thread .It's been suggested that it's about social cohesion or a driver feels it's more secure to park next to another car rather than away from it in an isolated bay. Another theory. Indecisiveness. Too many free spaces and a driver can't make up his/her mind which one to park in so parks alongside one of the few there solves that dilemma. Another suggestion is that people like to park close to the entrance/exit ,saves a walk...and that's where other drivers park and, likely, for the same reason. Maybe, because there's no need to see if you're parked inside the white lines, which are often faded anyway, just pull up alongside another car. Can't go wrong..lol.

It is strange, though and quite a common occurrence. We like to park away from other vehicles.

An ex of mine used to park in one space and then move to another and another. I've seen her in tears because she couldn't decide where to park.

Wow..How indecisive. She must be like that with other dilemmas in life, too. Not good. Out of interest, was she like that in other situations ?
