WAMT....what annoyed me today!

Wow..How indecisive. She must be like that with other dilemmas in life, too. Not good. Out of interest, was she like that in other situations ?

She was a degree level educated professional woman who held a responsible job with a local council. Seeing her have an emotional melt down over a parking space was quite something. I tried to help by saying "Here will do nicely" but of course she couldn't be stopped. Mostly I did the driving :D

Another security light has failed!!! I have tried several small security lights on the side of my garage, ranging from cheap to expensive but they all seem to fail, either due to faulty seals or the movement sensor just not working any more! They all seem to be made in the same far eastern factory, to the same quality, which is not good. I used to always fit the same, metal lights, when I had my storage yard and the lights would last ten to fifteen years and you could actually change the bulbs, without breaking the screws or seals. These just take the biscuit and turn it into crumbs! How they pass an electrical test is beyond me! The sensor innards look like something out of a childs toy!

Yup. I have the same issue with garden lights thanks to globalism and Chinese quality being all we can buy.

One thing I used to do was CE Approval. I dealt with companies all over the world and the Chinese were by far the quickest at fabricating a certificate and sending it to me. All they needed was an example to copy.

I do have some security lights on my garage which must have been there 30 years or possibly more. I know I have changed the bulbs but the last time I did was a long time ago.

Believe me. I did it for a job. Well. It was one thing I did and people paid me. Including the Chinese.

I do believe you. I was simply pointing out that the CE marks has been degraded somewhat by the deliberately confusing CE rather than C E.

My driving licence was renewed last September until 2027. Today, I got a notification that it is due to expire.. I called DVLA and, surprisingly, got to speak to someone after just a few minutes. I spoke to a lady who had to go off and ask someone about it because she could see I had a valid licence until 2027. She returned to tell me that it wasn't the actual licence that was due to expire but my photo. So..I have to re-apply with a recent photo. I'll use my passport renewal photo, which my wife described as "grim"..lol..which was taken in September , and I have a choice. Do it online at a cost of £14 which will be refunded or get form D1 from the Post Office and send it in by post which costs nothing. I'll send it by post because I can see more phone-calls needed trying to get the £14 back. I went to a local PO this morning to get form D1. They are only avaialble at the main PO in town.

Was driving home earlier when I found the road was blocked at a crossroads. There’s been several accidents there in the past, people that don’t know the junction pull out without realising there’s traffic coming from either side. One car was in a hedge, badly smashed up, another was across the road with the front end stoved in. There was a fire engine, ambulance and several police cars already there, so the accident had obviously happened some time before. What annoyed me? The fire brigade guys were busy putting down sand on an oil spillage, the paramedics were treating various people. Meanwhile not one of the police staff were making any attempt to divert the big queue of cars that was building up down the only road left open. They were just standing around chatting to each other.

Have you tried Steinel? I’ve used their sensors and lights for several years without issue.

I can't recall the make of the one we have at the front and two at the back but I just replace the 300w strip halogen bulb as and when which isn't very often. They last years. We have two on the back wall for the garden..one each end of the house. One of them was replaced about 2 yeas ago and it's died. The installer recommended an LED light as the regular one had rusted at the terminals. He said they..the bulbs... last much longer. Maybe they do but this one hasn't. A replacement bulb costs about £15-20. The regular one..£6. We'll ask the electrician who the kitchen fitters used because he's 'Honest John'. For a long time we had trips on the electrics. We had three electricians look at it..this was before we had the new kitchen and one suggested rewiring the house ..about £4000. Another replaced a socket ..£25, another replaced an RCD and another said the pond pump had a fault.. so I replaced that. We also replaced the kettle, the toaster and the microwave. Fast forward to the new kitchen and that problem still persisted and we thought it might be the new induction hob. The electrician came back and put it on full power and no trip. He then looked at the fuse box and asked who had replaced fuses. I was reluctant to say as they all know each other . He said the wrong fuses had been fitted and the RCD wasn't adequate. He came back the next day with a new RCD . I've just looked at the cost of them ..£49..so maybe I've got that wrong. Whatever it was it was a higher rating and cost very little and he was happy to just put it right for us at no charge. It took him a minute, if that. We gave him £20 anyway.

The CE mark is a distinct thing and the mark to be applied when claiming European CE approval is specified and although some would say that the Chinese CE is visually similar anyone who had any passing familiarity with the European CE should immediately see the difference. Anyway. There was never any confusion what I was doing and what the companies who I worked with wanted as they were clearly seeking to comply with European CE approval and stated so and that's what they were in contact with me for :D My point was that in my experience the Chinese companies I dealt with weren't really to be fully trusted. I hope things have changed but looking at the tat made in China that's on sale in the UK I don't believe it has.

Cyclists who think it's OK to ride their bikes through the door of the train station they've just cycled to, right into the building, totally ignoring the customers/passengers along the way.

Saving the planet one cycle ride at a time does not give you the right to ride across the pavement (not allowed by the way) and into a building specifically designed for pedestrians.

D

Nothing surprises me anymore re stories about cyclists. My wife hates them with a vengeance..Lol

Something military just went over sounding very loud, low and fast. That's not too unusual here as they go out over the north sea to shadow the Russians but the time of day is a bit unusual. Whenever this happens I hope it's just routine.

I was an every day cyclist for many years and I always winced when I saw the idiots in action.

The problem is that there are a highly visible minority, who believe that the deity of their choice has given them the rightI of way at all times. I had a minor disagreement with one such idiot, who complained that my wife and I were blocking his way and ignoring his bell. We were on a pedestrian path next to a busy A-Road dual carriageway. The path has been re-zoned as shared but the council, which performed this "service to the public", hasn't even cut the grass for several years. This has reduced the width from 6 feet to 3 feet. We couldn't hear his bell over the traffic noise and even a lycra wearing fool should have been able to see my wife's walking disability.

As always, it's the stupid few who spoil it for the decent majority.

Local pub having "outside entertainment", noise till late, carrying up to 3/4 mile away. License states no noise at facade of neighbouring properties. Complaints gone in. Council says business is exempt due to Live music Act 2012 to "protect the music industry" so can have noise 8am to 11 pm!!!! Outrageous!

Valuations - I know people need to make a profit, and there are lots of hidden costs in running a business like insurance etc... but a quote of 350 + VAT (420) to value a watch and a ring is just daylight robbery. They even quoted it would be an hour max - thats some hourly rate!!

That sounds like an F16 but, more likley, to be a Eurofighter Typhoon.

The cloud cover stopped me seeing it so I suppose it could have been either but I think the Typhoon has a more recognisable sound. When they go over I know what it is before I look up and I don't think this was one. The main thing is that as we're still here it wasn't Russian.

My bold: They keep pushing the envelope and are escorted out of our airspace. Applies to the coast of Norway too.

Here's the latest.

Yup. I know what's happening and I always hope that's all it is. We also often see a couple of French executive jets which the RAF use for electronic warfare.

I think that "people shouldn't have fun" if it prevents other people having the pleasure of their own homes.

The words "don't be a spoilsport" are a good indicator that the speaker is a bully and probably worse.

My route to work takes me past Lambrook School in 'Ascot' in Berkshire. It's actually closer to Bracknell. It's where the 3 Wales children go.

Lately the local council have installed new sleeping policemen on the road outside the school to reduce everyone's speed because the old one tended to shred tyres and if you lined up at them properly you could pass over them at over 30mph... So, new speed humps. That doesn't bother me, but given the council have used quite a lot of tarmac to create these new ones, could they not have fixed the potholes on the same stretch of road at the same time???

If a product is marked made in China/prc I’ll if possible put it back, getting harder to buy quality stuff that lasts.

He sounds very intolerant to me.... :D
I don't think it's intolerant to object to loud music that penetrates your closed windows.

There's no reason why loudspeakers shouldn't be banned at outdoor events or those in areas close to homes. There's these things called headphones with wireless connections that people could use instead.

Well, it does occur to me that, if you're putting in sleeping policemen, then leaving the potholes where they are is a good secondary speed control...

Until a couple of years ago my wife and I owned a cottage at a ski resort in the Norwegian mountains, 3 hours drive from where we live near Oslo. Access by a 5km long private gravel road. Once I complained to the owner about the state of the road and he said the potholes were there to help people keep to the speed limit which was 20km/h due to ski tracks crossing the road in several places. Cheap and effective solution...

Sleeping policemen, driven over carefully should not damage your car, potholes on the other hand don’t have their position marked and are often deeper than the height of sp’s?

I would surmise the noise level would depend on whether they have been given authority to 'turn the wick up' as high as required without going supersonic at low level.......just how quick are they required to "meet the intruder".

PS are afterburners only for supersonic speeds or also used sub-sonic such has rapid ascent to get on station?

Sleeping policemen (cushions) that are badly maintained can develop ragged edges and rip tyres.

Yeah, I mean why do they need speakers at Glastonbury and other music festivals. Or even at our local pub occasionally or village fete?

It reminds me of someone complaining about the noise from the bell ringing practise on a Weds evening... well here's an idea, dont move to a village with a church which has had the church bells for hundreds of years.

I would have thought that in the majority of cases, a pub for example has been there since before a complainant moved in, so if so allergic to noise, why live near to a pub. Unless you move to an isolate house you will get noise from people, traffic, events etc... As long as its not every night or till 2am what's the issue?

Yes..of course. I'd be up im arms myself. I hate loud music. I was actually having a joke at my own expense...hence the :D .Unless you were aware of my intolerance to quite a lot of things..most times with justification, which has come across on here from time to time , the self-deprecating comment would be lost.

Followed by the "Oh, now I've seen it, I don't want it."

Oh, i hope you get somebody learning Bass guitar nearby. :D

Talking about bass. If people who insist on playing loud(ish) music at home with, in summer, the windows open, if they thought to turn the bass down it wouldn't be so bad for the neighbours. I'm sure you'll know that it's the long wavelength of a deep sound that makes it carry...that and a lower absorption rate into the environment than higher notes You can get away from loud music to a point where all you can hear is the bass. It's why whales are able communicate very long distances across the oceans because of the low frequency sounds they have adapted along with the fact that sound travels much further and faster in water. There's probably more to it than that but turn the bass down and it will save a lot of annoyance.

By the way. Last week, I saw a kid of about 10 years old on TV playing drums. He was brilliant and I wondered about neighbouyrs because he'd need a lot of practice. Maybe did it in a local village hall.
