WAMT....what annoyed me today!

WAMT was that two couples, at different tables, smoked cigarettes after their evening meal at their table in the outdoor dining area of the hotel and right. by the lake...here in Italy. My wife tells me that even in the UK they would be allowed to do that. ...ok outside but not inside. Cigarette smoke is obnoxious to smell and 'it drifts' Smoking should be banned in any eating area. Germans seem to be amongst those who smoked the most. One German man..in his late 60's, smokes each morning after his breakfast ...at the table. I make sure we're well away from him if I see him before we choose a table. The breakfast eating area is outside in a narrow strip just outside the dining room..so, technically, outside. I might mention this to reception before we leave .I doubt it will change,though.
 
temporary car insurance.

I just want to insure myself on my wifes car while she is out of the country. She's not back till sep so we let the insurance lapse on it. However the battery is dieing now and i need to run it to keep things working. So getting some temporary quotes of around £200 for a month! that's more than i pay for a year for my car which is twice the size. Cheeky sods!

Repayment of excess payment. Why is it a direct debit can be taken immediately from your bank, but a refund takes 'up to 10 days'. And seems to.

A direct debit is already set up and is automatic.
A refund is an adjustment that has to be processed separately, and if they have a lot to process, then it takes time.
It is still annoying though having to wait up to 10 days....
 
I should have qualified this further. They shouldn’t have taken the payment in the first place. Scottish Power.
 
Yesterday was busy for sport F1, Tour de France, Test Cricket etc. so I opted to watch F1 live and record the cricket highlights on BBC4. Reasonably happy that two UK drivers were in the top 3 and settled down to watch the recording of the cricket at 2000 by which time I had heard that England had won. As the recording played the related info stated that it was the 4th day of the 3rd test but it was showing piano music. It now appears that the BBC rescheduled the cricket without warning but nor was it on iPlayer. I used the general search on my Virginmedia box and it took me to a channel I knew nothing about Sky Showcase on which the highlights were being shown. It seems that the BBC does suddenly move programmes fairly often now as my wife has also missed several programmes due to this. I want the BBC to continue as a public service network but they seem to be doing all they can to lose this status.

If you're parked on a drive, an Optimate (or similar) battery conditioner will keep it topped up. An Oxford solar charger will do the same job given a little Sunshine!

Last couple of weeks really, but today was particularly bad.

Why are there so many horseflies this year?

Even more annoying lorries doing 56.1 MPH overtaking lorries/ caravans doing 56 MPH on an overtaking lane that last just long enough for them to complete the manoeuvre.
 
Odd that Citronella is allegedly completely ineffective as an insect repellent! Works for me as a spray (Avon's Skin So Soft [although that does make me smell like a tart's handbag!!!]) and impregnated coil bracelets. Mrs Nod gets the occasional bite through DEET.
 
Trying to get a doctors appointment.

You have to ring at 8:00 and wait in the queue. This morning I started before 08:00 and kept hitting redial until I could join the queue and waited 40 minutes and was then told there are no appointments for today. When I asked for another day I was told there's nothing for 2 weeks and was offered 20/7.

When I go to the surgery these days it's almost empty. Yesterday there were two cars in the car park when I arrived and a maximum of 5 people in the waiting room whilst I was there. In pre pandemic days the car park and waiting room waiting room would be full with people having to stand as there were no more chairs available and I do wonder what's going on and why throughput seems to be a trickle of what it was.

I had assumed that the on-line appointments system had ceased as it always stated no appointments left in the period. My wife wanted an appointment and logged into her PC at 2 a.m. and got an appointment in the following week. Even when I did last see my doctor, he suggested that I did not really need to see him and a phone call would have done (I had doubled the dose of one of my pills using some excess pills my wife had kept)? It seems and am OK now to manage my own symptoms and medication.

I wonder what the Drs are actually doing these days.
It'd be good if they put in a 40 or even 35 hour week like everyone else.

I think we're really lucky down here. If I call before 09.30, I expect to speak to a doctor on the phone later that morning and if they feel it needs a visit, I will see them either later that day or the following morning. And I live in a little town with I would say an older than average population. If I need a blood test that's usually a 2 day wait, but they often ask if I can "pop in now" as they have 5 minutes free. Cracking service....

On line appointments ended here long ago as there was some sort of problem with it so we're back to calling at 08:00. Today the phone queuing system didn't come in until about 08:10 and before that I just got a phone line provider type message but I can't remember what it was. Maybe someone was just 10 minutes late turning the machine on?

I have to go to the surgery quite often to drop off my mothers repeat prescription and it did strike me how empty the car park has been. Entering the waiting room and sitting there it did hit me how empty the place was and I do wonder what's going on.

This seems to be the "new normal."

I send my repeat prescriptions on-line and the actual prescription is sent direct to the Pharmacy. Unfortunately, they do not neatly align so I have to go to the pharmacy at least every other week. I believe some pharmacies will manage your repeat prescriptions for you including requesting from the G.P. though to delivering at your home address.

I don't mind going to the surgery as it's an excuse to go on a nice walk. They send the prescriptions to the pharmacy at our local ASDA and I pick the medication up from there when I do the weekly shopping. I've avoided all these automated and post your medication to you offers as I'm worried about not receiving the correct medication in the correct quantities at the correct time.

We have had issues over the years. A doctor once changed the medication and my mother was in the emergency dept that night. The surgery have also repeatedly changed procedures and sent the prescription here there and everywhere without informing me. Everything that can go wrong seems to so I don't want the extra worry of any automated service and the post :D

We have a pharmacy on the local high street but their service is so appalling and the staff so appalling that I've avoided setting foot in the place for years. I've had one problem with ASDA staff but dealing with ASDA is a dream compered to the local high street pharmacy.
 
I had planned to cut the grass and do a bit of tidying up in the garden this afternoon.
One torrential down pour later, and that was the end of that :(
 
Give it another half an hour and it should be dry enough for the tidying (and the mowing with a decent RCD!)

If it helps I managed to cut our front and back grass (well the tall weeds) and next doors front grass. It is now torrential rain.
 
British Gas........... again! It seems that my boiler service is due and that there will be an engineer available next week, if I would like to confirm the day and time. I had to pester them and threaten legal action when my service was way overdue a couple of months ago! (They did it within a few weeks, so No!) My boiler does NOT need another service! Hopefully, my boiler will run more efficiently than the company! I'm sorely tempted to let them come and service it again!!! :)
 
OS drive on my desktop died last night. :mad: Repair man can fix it today (replace with new drive) but it looks like I will now lose my LR 6.14 and PS Elements and have to go to subscription. :mad::mad::headbang:

While I was in his shop he showed me the monitor for his new Smart Meter (he had to have one as his old meter was malfunctioning). He had run just the monitor for 24 hours (since the meter was fitted) and nothing else was switched on in the building, it cost him 17p for that 24 hours according to the meter (which was the only thing drawing power.

That's £62 per year for the privilage of having the Smart Meter..................... :mad::mad::mad:

I reluctantly signed up and now use PS2023 and I have to grudgingly admit that it's so much better than anything I've used before. The recent updates to noise reduction and object selection are like science fiction :D I hope that if you do have to subscribe you're happy with the new software.
 
One of my neighbours has started to park his car half on their front and half on hours. They've lived there decades and he's only started doing this in the last couple of weeks. This makes it difficult for me to park on our front and keep our drive clear (we both have 3 cars, I never leave any out for long.) We don't get on at all and tend to avoid each other but yesterday I was so annoyed I knocked on his door and asked him to park on his own front and he did agree so I'll see if he does. It's doubly annoying as his house is the last in the row and then there's a couple of hundred metres with no houses so he could park there and cause no one any issues at all.

You are lucky. I'm only one. And 2 neighbours have 4 cars each. One with a drive for 2 cars.. but no. They have to park on the road.. but leave half a car space each side.. I was trying to load a broken chair and 5 trips to the skip today. In this weather.. I was so annoyed I knocked and asked them to give me a hand because I had to park way down the street or would they kindly move their car up. One foot.... ggggrrrr. They moved their car...
 
The good news is that he did indeed only park about a foot on our front yesterday. That's ok.

Todays annoyance...

In a part of town in which I haven't driven for years I came to a T junction, me being on the long leg of the T, there were two signs, one said No Right Turn and the other said Straight On Only. This was a T junction and I was facing a pavement with a fence beyond. It wasn't even a slight left or Y junction, it was a hard right angle left. When did straight on become Left?
 
Bl.... hearing aids :( decided they weren't working with bluetooth :( NOT helpful. Did all the fiddles I knew to try and get them working - no success.

For some unknown reason - they have just decided to connect to bluetooth and are now working again . MOST IRRITATING

Yes - I need to get into see my guy and get them adjusted/replaced BUT I'm still covid positive so can't
 
Watching Alcatraz play Dontlikechips in the tennis thingy in Wimbledon. Andrew Castle is commentating and is boring me to tears!

If you're in a university town, maybe some "helpful" student has turned the sign through 90°. Not unknown here. They do traffic lights too.
