WAMT....what annoyed me today!

Almost always the way!

Algebra - today and every day.

Why use gobbledegook when you can write it out in a concise computer language (together with meaningful comments) that a ten year old can follow? :naughty: :exit:

Being asked to pay £160 to replace a satellite dish LNB, 15 minutes work max.

I paid up, sadly one of the hidden costs of getting old & being too unsteady to climb a ladder.anymore.....I can still remember many years ago my 70 year old uncle cleaning the gutters of his council house, he died of a head injury when he fell off the ladder.

Hey im 46 and think twice about going above first floor windowsill level, especially when its doing something sketchy like holding a satellite dish at the same time. Id pay the money.

I have, at times, this strong anxiety about my future health or that of my wife. In the back of my mind there is this thought that one of us will be diagnosed with Cancer, parkinsons, altzimers, have a stroke or chronic mobility issues. We spend a huge amount of time outdoors walking or paddling and to think that one of us may not be able to do that scares me silly especially when thinking about what we will do in retirement. I now factor in the consequences much more than I used to so hanging off a ladder trying to fix a dish is off the table

Having lost my footing, near a chimney, sliding down the slates on the freshly ground out dust from the old mortar and ending up with my heels wedged into a rotting 6" x 4" gutter, before inching my way back to the roof ladder, I am now happy to pay for someone else to do the ladderwork! ( I was three storeys up at the time and my landing spot would have been a York stone pavement)

I've been using a garage for decades but lately I haven't been happy with them so I tried another, They seemed to sort out my MX5 but then I saw a patch of oil on the garage floor so it'll need to go back as it wasn't leaking a drop before. Next was my Hyundai which they did an MoT and service on including changing the wipers and two rear indicator bulbs which very strangely must have failed while they had the car as they were working when I dropped it off, I didn't press the point as the indicator bulbs were only £10. The rear wiper though was only contacting the screen in middle few inches with 2/3rds of the wiper not touching the screen at all so it had to go back for that and today I see it too is leaking oil so will have to go back again for that. So, that's two cars MoT'd and serviced and one had to go back for the rear wiper and both will need to go back for oil leaks. Oh, and a big question mark over those rear indicators as they were both working when I backed the car out of the drive.

Deep sigh. I'll take both cars back for the oil leaks but next time I think I'll go somewhere else.

Reminds me of years ago when my old Mk2 Cortina failed the MOT with worn steering ball joints, which I paid the garage to replace. A year & 6000 miles later the same garage 'failed' it again for the same reason. When I pointed this out to the garage that they had replaced the ball joints a year earlier, they said they would check it again, & surprise surprise it passed........

I subsequently had them checked elsewhere & they were fine. I never went to that garage again.

Cables. :headbang:

One thing I wanted to address with my new PC was the cable situation. I tried last week when setting up the new monitor and keyboard but no, it's still like Spaghetti Junction.

I thought the day's of "trying it on" had passed, sadly not it seems.
I'm lucky, the guy that owns the garage that I use, is well respected among his peers,
and if they can't sort it, they send it to him.
He may not be the cheapest in the area, but he gets it right first time.

In regard to cars & servicing ..

I have a 69 plated Ford Kuga and use a Ford dealer for the servicing.

Now as others may know Ford (and all other dealers?) have fixed/set prices for their interval services. For the Kuga that is 12 monthly or 12500 miles, whichever comes sooner but as my mileage, even at the 3 yo point, is only a bit over 11000 of miles I go by the 12 months.

However, outside the fixed price services there are optional/advised extras that the service desk guy brought to my attention....
Brake fluid advised to be done every 2 years and Air Conditioning servicing every 3 years.

These seem 'prescriptive' IMO as the brakes meet all brake test performance demands and there is no 'at brake pedal' evidence of the brake fluid degradation.......and I will likely opt to change it at next year's service.

As for the A/C, I am unsure whether that advice is smoke & mirrors (so to speak) because AFAIK provided you use the A/C system even in the winter months the seals & system will remain well lubricated......and for should not be drained and regassed (including "adding a dye to see leaks in future..") on a prescriptive basis!

Wear and degradation is a combination of age and 'wear & tear' due to usage....so when usage is (mileage) is lower that should be considered when options are offered!

On another note....I had a stone chip damage that resulted in an over night propagated crack. Insurers redirect to their nominated windscreen service. Who try to upsell new wipers, saying they should be replaced once a year or following a screen damage as the wiper may/might have picked up some glass and scratch the new screen. The added cost if I wanted them to do it was £43, I declined saying I could do that myself and bought a pair for about £27 odd.

Now, the windscreen fitters were careful and the current wipers are still doing their job well... NB I made sure to clean the blade edges before using them......so may send the new pair back for a refund

But its not the 15 mins you are paying for - it goes towards knowing how to do it (quickly and safely), van, ladder and tools, insurance time spent on admin etc... just like when people moan about the cost of a tog as all they do is push a button!

Dont know what version of the MX5 you have but if you have clear lens on the indicators as the latest model does then your indicator bulbs need to be sufficiently orange. The paint degrades so while the bulbs may be fine the colour may not be.

WAMT.... for the second time now I've smashed my hand full force against the wall whilst playing The Walking Dead on my son's VR. It really does immerse you to the point of forgetting reality, unfortunately at the cost of bodily pain. But otherwise a good bit of fun! :D It's incredible where technology is at.

The indicators weren't for my MX5, they for my Hyundai Getz and I don't believe they were blown. If I can get the oil leaks sorted I think that'll be the last time I go to that place.

Anyway. Todays annoyance is Windows updates.

Some time ago I noticed that my PC wasn't recognising some buttons on some sites as being clickable and then some time later they were again and have remained clickable for months but now they've gone again.

Ordered a couple of Tritium key fobs through Amazon and they appear to be dead as doornails so they're going back. Last ones lasted about 15 years but are completely unbranded and there's no chance I (or Mrs Nod!) can remember where they came from - I have a feeling it was a stall at the county show.

LOCAL NEWS - In January, seven people under the age of 18 were arrested as a part of an operation to tackle knife crime in the city. :(

And the "knife angel" was here for a few months, ( it left a couple of weeks ago) that worked well then

Just the internet again.

I must stop relying on directions off the internet. We were going to go somewhere today we'd never been before and the directions looked so simple I didn't even need to write them down. Just get off the A road at the stated junction, take the 3rd exit at the roundabout, go down the road and the destination is on the left. The only problem was reality was completely different and when exiting the A road at the stated junction there was no roundabout, just a T junction. Maybe 20 years ago the directions could have been vaguely right but today I might as well have been looking at a map of down town Mogadishu. I don't know why but in the last year or so I've had some rubbish directions from the net.

You might remember that Mrs WW as racially abused by stone throwing "children" a while back. We got a follow up visit from the police and he warned us that these "children" often carry knives. This was unheard of when I was a kid or even a teenager.

I’ve had that problem too, in my case it was directions to a pond for damselflies
the directions were quite detailed but unfortunately missed off a right turn
I had a feeling that I was quite close but couldn’t work out where it was from the directions luckily I also had an OS grid reference so stopped and got out my hand held garmin GPS and figured out where to go
I had driven a long way so could have been frustrating but worked out all good in the end , found a new species to me , Small Red damselfly :)

Feeling old! Better than the alternative but doesn't feel like it ATM!!! Spent a lot of yesterday clearing the MiL's loft and 6'1" doesn't fit too comfortably into 5'6" max headroom. Only a morning's work up there left to do though so worth the effort. And Cuprofen works on me.

As an ex surveyor, I used to spend a lot of time in lofts! They say a lot about the folks in the house. Mine is a shambles!

FiL should have stuck to working with metal. Some of the loft "boarding" is done with 1/2" low density chipboard... Only went through once but luckily my shin was still on some decent ply so escaped with a barked shin rather than a Nod-through-ceiling scenario!
4 estate car boots full to the tip so far but I think that's just about it for the dump; the rest is worth charity shopping.

ABE? I thought this place was better than that...

Wales losing. :(
I don't follow any of this, but I did hear that the fans weren't allowed to sing Delilah,
Did that put the mocha's on it?

But did they sing it, that's what I need to know :D

The crowd were very subdued during the game but I did hear a few renditions of it in the build up. The choir though weren't allowed to sing it.

Being Welsh, I have to follow RU, it's the law.

WAM Yesterday.

I took my mam to the supermarket. There were long queues at the three working checkouts whilst 6 more were taped off and unused. I could have gone to the self checkout but I had some unpackaged and therefore unbarcoded veg items and didn't know what to do with them so stuck it out in the long queue.

Not to the shop manager... At the busiest times how about putting some more staff on the checkouts.

Won’t do it, trying to get us all to self serve and let them cut staff, I was directed to the diy tills yesterday, I declined and told them, “I don’t work here, nor do I get a discount for self service!”

We are still using click & collect , I refuse to waste my time scanning a trolley load of shopping or queuing for one of the last remaining manned checkouts. We occasionally use the self service tills if we only have a basket with a few items.

All but given up on click and collect and/or home delivery - got fed up of tired veg and shorter dated stuff that we would usually avoid. Don't like the self service tills much - every time there's a problem or something else that needs staff intervention (alcohol for example) means waiting for someone to be available. Been short changed by them too (used cash because I needed parking change.)

We use the online delivery service. Apart from some of times when we are away from home when we go into a shop, I can't rememeber the last time we went into our local supermarket and did 'real' shopping.

I have used the self service tills in the past, but every time I did something went wrong, and I had to wait for assistance, all the time watching the
queue I would have joined. Every-time it was much slower than joining a queue.

Recently, I was without transport for a few days, so I tried the Morrisons prime thing through Amazon.
Same day delivery if ordered before around 2pm and free if I sent 40 quid.
But I was careful to only buy stuff that " couldn't spoil"

The rest I got from the local convenience store 5 or so mins walk.
Obviously that was a bit more expensive, than Tesco. But probably not a lot in it, had I driven there.
