WAMT....what annoyed me today!

A bit of a medical thing for me...

I seem to have a problem with wax in my ears. It's happened for many years and seems to cause a problem maybe twice a year. This seems to come to light when I take a shower and I get water in my ear and it bubbles away and annoys me. After talking to the pharmacist I either use ear drops or olive oil and a little dropper and then after a while flush it out with water. That all sounds easy enough but doing this always makes me feel very dizzy and sick for about a day. I did my left ear last night and the effect was immediate, I felt really sick and dizzy and so crawled off to bed. I'm a bit better today and it is easing a bit as the time passes and I'm sure I'll be ok later tonight or if not tomorrow.

Mrs WW suffered this for the first time in her life last year and after failing to clear it with drops she succeeded with a vibrating ear cleaner thingy I bought her off Amazon. I might have to give one of them a go. Other women in my life dismiss this as "a man thing."

Does anyone else suffer this?

I have suffered for most of my life from this. I used to get my ears syringed at the GP surgery every 18 months or so. But now they tell me that they have stopped doing that - micro-suction is the NICE approved solution, but that's not available on the NHS. Now you have to go private, it's about £60 for one ear or £90 for both.

NHS: health care, free at the point of delivery - Ha!

I don't ever recall the discomfort mentioned.

But the limited experience of the GP surgery service was:-
..Syringing
...Olive oil prior to syringing
...ditto on the oil but a sort of micropulse syringe.

I hope they still offer the service as need it again!

I was about to mention micro-suction and thought I better check first to see if anyone else has mentioned it.

I need a wax-out maybe every three years or so . It's more than that now and I haven't had them done so far. One year, quite a long time ago, I went to the nurse at the surgery and she'd been told I was just coming for a check but I told her the appointment was for an ear syringe. and that I'd oiled my ears for the last couple of days in preparation. So, she did them but two days later I had awful ear ache in one of them which lasted quite a while. To cut a long story short ...ish....I saw a doctor about it. Nothing could be seen and I was given some oil prescription,I can't recall what. A couple of weeks later I was back to see the doctor. I was then sent to an ENT consultant. He checked and said he coudn't see anything. He sent me to an audiologist who said my hearing was fine but also said..and this bothered me... 'I think I know what's happened here but I'll leave it to Mr.....to tell you " He never did. I was then sent to see a consultant who specialises in the immune system. Can you believe it ?? I had blood tests. She couldn't find anything amiss. I then told her about how the nurse thought she was just going to take a look and if my ears needed doing I was to make another appointment so her time schedule was thrown off course and she sighed and I got the distinct impression, as she went about syringing my ears, that she was rushing and is it possible that bruising of the inner ear or more likely, the drum, had taken place. The consultant immediately said "Oh, yes" and that she de-waxes her father's ears and has to be careful that the syringe is at the correct angle otherwise damage to the inner ear can be caused. She was right when she said it would, over time, be ok.

The parting words of the ENT consultant was that putting water into the ear at pressure is not a good thing and next time have them done using micro-suction which I'd never heard of. So ,I did that the next time they needed doing and ,as you say, not on the NHS, I paid £160 at a private hospital to have both ears done. What annoyed me was that the Dr said one ear needed doing but the other wasn't too bad. Could have saved myself £80.:) Not really, best to get both done, whatever. You did well at £90 for both ears.

Seems I'm not the only one to suffer from this.

It's interesting reading the comment about the nurse rushing it and possible bruising the inner ear as the last time I had this done by a nurse she seemed to be using a lot of force and I did worry about her doing damage.

I don't remember suffering this sickness and dizziness when I was younger but it really knocks me for a day or so and so much so that I now dread it and can't do two ears at once now, I have to do one and wait a few days before doing the other. I'll try adding olive or or drops for a few days before rinsing and see if that lessens the symptoms.

inner ear
It won’t be the “inner ear” unless she was using a “Black & Decker” I would have thought. She would have to destroy your middle ear to get to the inner surely?

Just another annoyance.

I received something from Amazon and it's damaged and has to be dropped off at a UPS point but looking at their map they're still showing three nearby shops which I know don't accept UPS drop off as I went to all of them last time. I'm trying another this afternoon but after last times farce I'm not really all that hopeful and I'm beginning to resent having to drive to shop after shop only to be told "we don't accept those and haven't for ages."

I do wish UPS would keep their list up to date. That'd be lovely.

Waiting on the "live" chat for car insurance renewal as I had to check my payment details (in the queue - No. 37 and falling very slowly !) and being told every few minutes that the screen will be closed in one minute due to inactivity!!! That means that I can't do anything else but watch the screen !!!!!

Maybe the drum then. Any suggestions ? It was very painful for a good while.

No I’ve honestly no idea. I guess she may have just meaning to say the inner part of the external ear if you see what I mean.

Another cyclist on the pavement moan. This afternoon I was chatting to my neighbour out on the front when matey comes riding along the footpath,no hands on the handlebars..they were in his pockets.. and he was wearing headphones. As he approached a mum pushing a buggy with a child in it he just went onto the metre-wide grass verge to pass her and back onto the footpath. He dwarfed his bike and he looked to be about 6.3". In the 20 minutes of chatting with my neighbour probably a dozen cars passed so a very quiet road. It's just unnecessary.

Did you hear an automated message telling you that your call was important to them ?

I've always wondered about it. Looking at my post I see I didn't quite get the wording right for the audiologist, thinking back on it. Rather than say. "I think I know what's happened here but I'll leave it to Mr **** to tell you he said "I've got my own ideas what the problem is..I just wonder if they realised why it happened and and didn't want to say for obvious reasons. The second consultant didn't say it was probably caused by the nurse rushing only that it's a possibility that it wasn't done correctly. Water under the bridge now..or rather down my ear..:)

I wear hearing aids and was advised to use a little warm almond oil in my ears once a week to help the natural process of shedding wax overnight, doesn’t help my ear canals are very hairy. I also like a soak in the bath with my head partially submerged and ears full of hot water, last hearing check the nurse remarked my ears were nice n clear.

Sadly we've just had the bathroom done and the bath is now gone.

I'm going to give it a rest this week as I have things to do and need to drive three days this week but I'll have to have a go another day. I like the sound of almond oil but I think I'd be tempted to drink it :D

The nurse I was worried about really seemed to be putting her back into it. I never went back for another go.

I've been trying to ring Laura, the head of the support workers all day to try and find out the rota for next week as she's only sent up to and including this Sunday, plus I just booked 2 shows at the Lyceum for which she needs to book staff to attend because Mum doesn't like sitting in the Circle due to having bad knees.

Had a new fridge freezer delivered (integrated) by AO. Installer comes in to measure and realises the the door fixing is wrong as the new one has a fixed door fixing kit whereas we needed a sliding one. Knowing what I know now, yes I selected the wrong product but I didn't have a clue at the time. I've bought quite a few things from AO and their follow-up calls have always been very helpful and I would've hoped that they would have ensured that the right product was being sent but he was too busy trying to sell me insurance cover at £7.99 a month! We now have to wait until Friday of next week. The only upside is that the correct model is £70 cheaper and they've refunded the recycling fee.

I didn’t know sliding door versions existed!

I used AO for the first time a few months back when I bought a new lap top. It had a fault on it and I was peeved when AO wouldn't take it back and instead had me talk to the makers support department who after insisting I change some drivers confirmed it was was duff so off it went for repair. I'd much rather have had my money back or a replacement but "repair" was the only option on offer. It came back with exactly the same fault and it was only then that I got my money back.

Contrast this with Currys who agreed with no issue at all to give me my money back on another faulty lap top. I don't know if repair rather than replacement or money back is standard practice with AO but I doubt I'll be buying from them again.

I finally got the rota for next week off Laura, they're sending a guy called Anthony next Wednesday, the last time I worked with him he stormed off and got all mardy and phoned Laura to complain about me because I happened to raise my voice due to a problem, I can't be doing with mardy people so I cancelled the call as the regular staff are on annual leave so they can't come, and Laura herself's in a meeting so she can't cover the call.

I wouldn't mind but this is a problem with care companies in general IMO, they don't got no staff because everyone's either on annual leave or off sick.

Oh dear.

I hope you can get this sorted Richard. Maybe you could see Anthony as a challenge and see if you can hold your breath and count to three and outlast him? Maybe promise yourself a little treat if you can? :D I think I'd pick my treat as one of the marzipan fruits I got for Xmas and am slowly eating.

BT sending me a free and improved update to Norton Antivirus from previous McAfee which didn't work on my computer, had to be removed, only to find that McAfee was now screwed up and it won't let me reload it etc. , etc. Grrrrrr. Another marketing exercise to get me to buy new phones, computers etc., because the old ones can't update!

I've been trying since the day before yesterday to speak to a company called Luv 2 Meet U, a disability specific friendship/dating service run by the same company who produced The Undateables which has been on Channel 4 up to the latest series which finished towards the end of last year.

I know I talk fast in a broad Yorkshire accent but come on, most people can understand me! I've requested that the lady I spoke to rings me at my Parents this afternoon, and I guarantee she won't, I also gave her my main email address, and asked her to email the application form, I know she won't do it because she thinks the email address won't work, I've been using it for most of the last nearly 16 years, muppet! Smh.

WAMT well, for the last week or so, I suppose!) is an old (40+ years) rugby injury which has been a niggle for many years but has now come back to bite me! Managed to get a face to face quack appointment for early next week though so not all bad!

It's the cold weather! I have an old shoulder injury which hits around December to April every year now. The last time it was really bad, was the last time we went to Corfu, before Covid. I was in agony on the flight but after one day in the Corfu sunshine, the pain was gone. I've tried to get Corfu on prescription but the doctor is having none of it!!! :)

WAMT? I spoke to Apple this morning after Googling the UK phone number, I'm trying to sign up to the Apple TV+ service, as I have the app on my Sky Q box, and I read in last week's TV Choice that from today, they're showing a new series of Fraggle Rock and have the rights to all the episodes of the original 80s series... The original Fraggle Rock should by rights be on Disney Plus IMO because almost everything else Jim Henson ever did is.

However, I spoke to some Foreign guy, who did not understand my strong local accent, so I had to put my support worker on (she speaks in the posh version of a Doncaster accent) and you can imagine the confusion! Don't get me wrong I am NOT racist or xenophobic (I just hate most Americans), but I do not have the patience to deal with Foreigners on allegedly "UK" call centres.

I wish! It started getting worse during Spring 2020 but it was liveable with. Kept getting worse but I was reluctant to bother a stretched NHS with it until it started keeping me awake. I have some Nurofen Plus but am a bit reluctant to go down the opioid route since they just mask the problem, not to mention the possible consequences that their binding effects could have on my diverticulosis/itis.

I suggest that you dont bother making any calls to anyone based on that, then perhaps you wouldnt be WAMT

Erdinger Dunkel has gone up from £2 on my last Waitrose order 05/01 to £2.25 a bottle for the next 26/01
Anyone else thinking supermarkets are using Covid and Brexit to increase their profits?

Still £1.80 at Tesco, even better its in their 4 for 6 quid offer.
Not keen on a lot of their foodstuffs, but I think a beer delivery might be forthcoming.

Anyone else thinking supermarkets are using Covid and Brexit to increase their profits?
In the sense of excuses - no.

In the sense of both circumstances, along with massive gas price rises, forcing them to increase prices, then yes.

WAMT? Trying once again to sign up to Apple TV+ for Fraggle Rock, I do have an Apple ID, but because I haven't had an account on Itunes since about 12 years ago, it won't let me access the service.

Pointless anyway because I can't access the Itunes app on Chrome OS, and I can't afford to scrap it and buy a decent Windows 10 or 11 Desktop.

We bought a Panasonic solo flatbed (no turntable) microwave at Currys on Thursday I didn't want to buy it there but they bought out Comet years ago so it's the only store of its kind here. It wasn't in-store but they would deliver it to us when it does come despite not usually delivering small items. It isn't small, it's quite large at 53cm (20.5") Width - 28.5cm (h)..11.25" 42cm (16.5") depth. It's much larger inside than the normal turntable oines. It's solo use so no roasting etc. It would take about 5 days to arrive.. Yesterday we had a call from Currys .Not the shop but a customer centre. The person calling asked for me as I'd bought it so my wife came to me wearing her Apple watch and put it to my ear  Whatever next ?? When I realised who it was I gestured to my wife to take the call as it was awkward speaking to a watch..lol...She carried on the conversation and I could hear the lady asking if we'd received the microwave. My immediate thought was that as we'd been told that it would take 5 days to be delivered why is she calling us. To sell a Currys Care Plan (warranty) came to mind ? We 'd declined the offer of it instore.

At first she asked if the microwave had been delivered .Shouldn't she have been able to see that on her delivery progress screen ? My wife told her that,no it hadn't arrived. Then the lady said that we'd get a text to alert us that it was on its way. Normal practice for any deliveries. Then came the sell. "We can give you an extended warranty that covers electrical parts damage etc etc..is that alright then ?" They work to a script as we know. The wording was deliberate. The way it went shoud elicit a "yes, Ok" answer whereas "Did you want to take it out or would you be interested in that ? ?" would most likely get a 'no thanks' answer.

Another item will soon be delivered and I have no doubt that we'll soon be hearing from this Customer Care.. dept again and I shall have my response ready.

Even 2 years later it's still going on https://www.theguardian.com/money/2020/feb/26/currys-scam-calls-genuine

I’m not an old bloke who constantly moans about modern day trends, but the current unbridled use of the word super in front of any adjective and verb is making my ears wince.

I am super annoyed about this!

Back in the day if you had to describe something slightly better than normal you would use: very, really or pretty etc. … now all are replaced with super xxxxx.

If something was greatly better than normal you may care to use: extremely, amazingly or incredibly etc. … now these are replaced with super super xxxx.

As well as replacing those words before adjectives, such as super sweet, super annoying etc they are also getting to be used with verbs, such as I super want that to happen, or I super hate that.

The only potential bright light on the horizon, overuse of word tends to have a limited life span. God help us all if some botox’d You Tube, TikTok or Instagram influencer makes the connection that Latin – super and Greek – hyper mean the same … or is that just super-hyper worrying?

Super duper post

I blame Mary Poppins for that with her super califragilisticexpialidocious.

So, the one that really gets me is people starting a sentence or an interview reply with "So"
:D

It's not quite so bad when used in that context, i.e. a question.
But when used as a prefix to a statement, if I had any hair, I'd be ripping it out.
:p
