WAMT....what annoyed me today!

Working in science and engineering and with the Military, it would have been too time consuming to avoid acronyms and abbreviations. When the team involved in the work are already familiar with such short cuts then why waste time. Of course there is always the risk a newcomer may misunderstand.

FIRE! meaning Financial Independence, Retire Early but WW3 could have accidentally been started.

Dave

Surely it's far easier to simply ask what an unknown TLA (or more) means rather than get annoyed by it.

Man liveth not by kindness alone. Getting good and mad at stupidity does wonders for the circulation! ;)

The sunrise I know its odd but its the background to it.
Last week driving to work beautiful sunrises all week. Saturday I got up got ready grabbed the camera and got to my view point a few mins before sun rise. Stood and waited and waited nothing worth shooting flat light grey skys. Went home had coffee and breakfast. Sunday got up early got ready grabbed the camera went down to the view point and waited nothing went home most discuffed.
This morning driving to work beautiful sunrise grrrrr dont think the sun likes me or maybe its camera shy.

There's also superfluous tech.
My last appt. was with Rheumatology and at the entrance was a touch screen to book in to your appt. I logged in and when to the indicated waiting area. The noticed a handwritten sign say, let a nurse know you're here. I did so and asked why I needed to, only to be told that their computer isn’t linked to the touch screen system.
Similar situation for me recently. You’re asked to check in at the hospital via the touchscreen. Go through all that process and it then tells you to report to the check in desk…..where they tell you exactly the same information that’s printed in your appointment letter.

What is even more annoying though: I have to have regular MRI appointments as I’ve got a growth on my auditory nerve that has to be monitored once a year. I struggle to hear without hearing aids. EVERY SINGLE TIME, the operators do the same thing.
“Are you wearing hearing aids?”
Yes.
“Can you take them out then please, they interfere with the equipment ”
I do that.
They then give me earplugs and get me to also put on headphones, even though I tell them those are pointless as I won’t be able to hear a bloody thing.

THEN, they start talking to me !

The last time, I had to take off the headphones, remove the earplugs and really concentrate to hear what the operator was saying. Which turned out to be….”are you alright?”

I took a hearing test some years ago work related, kitted out with headphones and sat in soundproof booth, after a few minutes operator comes in and asks “ you taking the p***?” I told him there was nothing happening and I was waiting for the test to start, He told me he’d run it and was annoyed since I hadn’t responded at all, “ heard nothing mate” turns out the headphones were faulty, not pleased at having to apologise, even worse when I suggested he tests the gear before handing out, t***.

I'm sorry, as I would be for anyone, that Charles (king) has been diagnosed with cancer during his recent prostate gland operation but the BBC used all but five minutes of the 35 minute 6.00pm news bulletin this evening on it ,the remaining five minutes for other news. Of course Nicholas Witchell..royal correspondent, had a say. Totally irrelevant stuff, even showing film of the coronation. You'd think he'd died. The Palace didn't say what cancer he has but did say it wasn't of the prostate. My wife, who knows about these things, suggests it's cancer of the blood.

He's our monarch, our head of state. I would have been surprised if they didn't devote most of the programme to this particular story. It's called public interest, you just have a different interest to "Joe Public". Didn't bother me, other than the constant repetition of the same facts.

Do what I did and watched something else, the chase on ITV +1

I tried that but was 'asked'...lol..to put it back to BBC.

I like The Chase and watched it earlier. I switch between that and "Flog It" when the ads come on but both finish at 6.00pm when the news comes on but, as I say..I was overruled on changing channels..lol. However, that aside, my point was that it was an inordinate amount of time considering what's going on in the world . Ten minutes, at the most, would have been fine.

I saw it announced on Twitter and we went to it on BBC. They were asking some science and technology editor about it, who obviously knew as much as I do, so we switched to something on planner.

Well, you highlight a valid point..repetition. They were just stringing it out. As I said, the nature of it was such that you'd think he'd died..I mean going back to the coronation with accompanying footage. ? Why ? What has that got to do with a prostate operation and the cancer diagnosis ? All that was necessary was an update and mention of who would take over his duties as medical staff told him not to engage in any public events.

I'm not complaining about it heading up the news bulletin, as you say, he's the monarch but 30 minutes ? You say that I have a different interest to Joe Public..I am Joe Public. Support for the monarchy has dropped to 56% ..so ,of those polled it's reasonable to assume that 44% are a mix of Republicans and the indifferent.

What's planner ?

Edit. We don't use it but thinking about it I assume you have a list of programmes you intend to watch at some time and chose one of them. I hadn't heard of that although we do gave an LG smart TV so I assume there's a planner in there somewhere.

I almost posted about it on the annoying adverts topic as that is how it felt to me... But I do think the BBC news have a strange culture when it comes to such editorial decisions (e.g. When the Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier sailed into Portsmouth the BBC south new bulletin spent 30 minutes showing it moving slowly across the solent at the expense of any other local news).

(I do have sympathy for HRH, but would do for anyone having had both a parent, and a parent in law go through cancer treatment in the last few years).

I answer to no one :woot:

It's just been ' suggested' to me that I log out ...and put out the light....as we have to be up at 7.00am for a 7.15 brekky to get to the airport..Birmingham..about a ten minute drive ,from this hotel..for the 11.00am flight. :D.

Yeah, sorry, a bit obtuse. I meant the sky Q planner, where we record stuff.

The second part of Silent Witness postponed due to "football"....................... again! Far better watching bodies being forensically examined rather than........................... Oh! Just a minute! I forgot about the ladies!

It should be available on iPlayer

Poor quality products. My ebay purchases are showing more returns and refunds than ever. Some of them are downright dangerous. An engineering tool fell to pieces in use, in front of my eyes and in my hand!!! (First use out of the box!). No quibble from the seller after a pic of the broken pieces and a description of the occurence. Didn't even have to post it back! Country of origin unknown but I can guess! It was a very good (visual) copy of a tool that I had for years!

I gave up with eBay sometime ago. Even PayPal cut ties with them. Amazon seems to be a considered but better option, but only slightly and if avoiding Marketplace sellers.

TBH Amazon aren't far behind.
I recently replaced a halogen PIR light, that I'd had for many years, with a LED one.
It failed in less that 6 months, with only a couple of the LED's working.
The replacement failed after a couple of days, the sensor stopped working.

Did Amazon replace the failed 6 month light without any hassle?

No it was through a small business ( that'll teach me)
I contacted them, no response, Amazon asked if it had been rectified, I said no, and that was the the last I heard, from either.

I looked for a decent, reliable flood LED PIR for ages. After several failures I went for a Stanley one from B&Q. Its been great so far, 8 months in.

The last 2 exterior lights that I have used, I have sealed with silicone sealant (one mating side greased to aid bulb/led renewal). The previous (far eastern) lamps literally sucked moisture in past the (soft? plastic)seals on the cable and the glass panel, corroding the internals and wiring connections!

Pay cheap, pay twice. Some of the prices of these things make no sense, no idea how people can make money unless they ae substandard.

WAMT Yet another run in with our health service re my mum. After her breaking her arm in a fall at her house, I took her back to the consultant at the hospital (the journey was a nightmare due to her not being able to see or walk well, having high blood pressure and the pain that she was in, getting nauseous, being sick etc.) . The consultant suggested that I asked for a home visit by the physio to save her any more distress (she's 98, 99 next week, has type 2 diabetes, macular degeneration, almost total hearing loss and high blood pressure). I had to do the "round robin" of telephone numbers, of menus, sub menus, you are number 12 in the queue etc., until I got to someone who tried to "bully" me into taking her to a clinic for treatment, then got passed back to the doctor's surgery, who said that they don't do home visit referrals and gave me the number that I started with. I was then asked to take all mum's paperwork to the surgery, which I did. Long, long story short, the secretary was going to speak to the doctor and has put a note on the file - the story continues .......................... I went onto the website regarding the home visit scheme and it is full of self praise and lists all the awards etc. How to get the help is another story. I was always brought up to believe that we had the best health service in the world!!!

Solicitors.

I have a "contentious probate" issue. I need a solicitor who deals with these and is willing to do more than take £150 off me to advise me what to do or tell me they don't get involved in this.

Finding one relatively local to me is not as easy as it sounds. I've seen three so far and have today googled and phoned another eight and hopefully I've now found one who can and will do something other than tell me what to do or pass me details of another solicitor who might do something.

Grrrr.

I dunno where you are based but my wife works at Wake Smith in Sheffield. They have a dedicated contentious probate team.

Middlesbrough / Redcar area so unfortunately Sheffield is too far.

I've seen two solicitors so far. One gave me some duff info which caused me a big problem so I'm not going back there and the other gave some advice but when I went back to get them more involved and actually do something themselves I was told they don't do "Contentious probate."

I'm now waiting for a call back from two. What I don't want is a repeat of my time wasting experience with the other two so before I agree to a face to face for which they'll charge I want a phone conversation in which I'll give some basic info and detail the direction I want to go in and ask if this is the sort of thing they can indeed do.

I was amazed at the solicitor who wouldn't let me ask questions as they "Don't give free advice." Er. No. That's not what I want and that's not what I said. I want to know if the solicitor can provide the service I want before I hand over any money or waste more time on a solicitor who can't.

If you go on the law society website you can search for solicitors in specific areas of law in your geographic area.

Irwin Mitchell have a .Middlesbrough office, they do contentious probate.

This plus in my limited & needing some insight and guidance, the solicitors gave IIRC 30minutes free of charge consultation.

Though clearly on @woof woof experience that seems to have changed.
