The Ultimate Car Rig Photography Thread!

now has 3 clamps, 24ft of alu tube which slots together from a friend in the army, and my magic arm with camera bracket...going to focus on imaging monday so waiting till then to see if i can get some f1000's there otherwise will order monday night :-)

I'd look at getting one cup from Car Camera Rig, and one F1000, as the CCR one is rated to 30kgs not 2kgs, then use the F1000 as the middle and the CCR as the outer one, most the stress will be on the outer cup.

Awesome shot guys! Found your photos from this thread while searching for rig-shots 'n DIY RIGs and here I am - registered only for the purpose of sayin' how tremendous work you guys do!

I'm at the stage of improving my DIY RIG, but I'm hoping to publish some of my rig-shots tomorrow since the weather is getting better.

The car rig cups are the same price but don't have the adaptor to connect to the super clamps. I'm sure I can buy or get manufactured something to fix that

Yes I know but they seem to be much much better. You can buy the similar thing as the F1000s on their site too but it pretty much doubles the cost, or buy a extension tube which they also sell.

Thanks ;).

Unfortunately, my first RIG shot was a big misunderstanding... :bonk:
1. My rod is to springy (tried to stabilize it with a thin cord, but looks like it is also too springy too... Maybe I'll try with a thin steel-cord next time) but it's just a cheap (~$10), 1.5 to 3 meters long painting rod.
2. The weather today was so windy, that I was afraid of attaching my camera to the RIG, despite a really solid mount.
3. Maybe the exposure time was a bit too long...
4. My lenses and camera body do not have any IS :(

But, that was just a first time and I'm definitely not discouraged!

Problem with springy boom solved - got some aluminum 2x 110cm & 1x 100cm, fi 28mm and 1,5mm thick tubes from my father's bank, where whey were used for a bank's flag mast. The greatest thing about them is that they have this fast-plug buttons.

Certainly getting busy in here now, had my second venture out with my rig and the newly aquired Sigma 10-20mm, will post the resutls when they are done.

Just a quick question to all, how are people ensuring suction cups don't mark the paintwork?

Make sure they and the paint work are clean, apply some window clean to ensure they fix properly,........?

i'll be looking into PL inscurance so what has everybody else got? supplier? etc.

Cheers
Scott

Ive been at it again at the weekend ;)
I really can't believe, that such a long boom with suction cups placed so close to each other, does not cause bouncing . Especially, that I saw your video on YT how you do your RIG-shots... That's awesome!

They'll always be bounce in a circular tube, it's not that strong of a shape.
So what you suggest is buying a square or rectangular profile? I read somewhere that there's no difference, however while searching for some RIG pictures I've found many square-profile RIGs :gag:. Pro RIGs that can be bought are round as well.

I've also read, that using a boom with bigger diameter and thicker edges would do the best :suspect:.

Here you go - not edited photo of my rusty old friend :bonk:. Today the weather is so sunny, that I had to use 1/20s f/22 ISO100 @ 18mm and a circular polarizer and there is still some burn.

Still some bouncing appears, but after taking photos I realized, that one of suction cups was a little bit too loose. I will also think about putting some screws on the joints to stiffen it.

Dont get me wrong there is some bounce but its not severe, there will always be some bounce with a camera on the end of the pole. i make sure its steady before the car moved and 99% of the time i hold the boom anyway as i walk along.

You're right - that's what you said on the video ;).

Still, I'm wondering, how you managed to set your camera to 2.5s, f/20 and the photo you've edited in the next video has almost no burn :suspect:.

(Sorry for being such a pain in the ass about these RIG techniques :bonk:)

Nice

ah those are GFWilliams photo's / videos not me.

My video is the one i linked above
Geez... :bang:. My mistake, I confused you guys, and God only knows why :bonk:. Anyway, I was referring to your photo of Ford Focus and a really long boom before ;).

Just thinking: I use these clasps to attach a boom to suction cups - maybe removing there rubber elements would reduce bouncing as well? Even though I twisted screws really hard, these rubbers can transfer the shaking .

I wish my stuff was at his level...one day.

Im yet to post the final photo of the RS on here.

I would look to invest in some decent suction cups and some superclamps, either Manfrotto F1000 or F1100 cups.

as those connectors look strong i wouldnt trust them compared to superclamps

F1100 Cups

Yeap, you're right, but my DIY amateur-set was constructed only to see if I can manage to do some RIG-shots which I prefer over a panning-from-another-car shots. So these elements are not as good as designed for photography ones.

RIG shots also require me to buy some wider angle lenses, since my KIT 18-55 on crop is not satisfactory...

Anyway, it is worth investing in this equipment you've linked above.

BTW. Love this Focus shot .

Thanks, its my best so far.

yes i would invest as my F1100 cups can cope with my rig quite comfortably, im looking at getting some ball joints for more flexability

Thought I would re ask as no one saw it previously.

Mike where did you get the extension on top of the suction cup? I think that will be my next purchase for the rig as the majority of shots are very low down.
