The official (Bah Humbug) Olympics thread

I see some of the torches are on ebay already!

Stupid thing is up this way soon. Torch carriers better be careful they don't trip and brake their legs on the crappy potholed roads.

Can think of a great iphone game. Shoot the torch bearer ;)

One torch per runner? And you can see how the billions can be spent so easily. Surely half-a-dozen torches would have been two too many?

I might just go watch the torch locally now, just so I can heckle the waste of it all.

there is even a picture of a torch for over £1000. Where's me camera.

im not looking forward to the olympics one bit

My shift pattern has changed for 3 months due to it, where I will be constantly working.
The country cleary doesnt have the money to splash out on this, and I cant really see it bringing in to much

Im embarrased that the rest of the world will be focusing on area's such as Woolwich SE London for the events. It has nothing to give yet it has areana's there

Personally i'd have said that half a dozen was about 4 too many - you need one torch which can be handed from runner to runner , and maybe a back up in case of technical malfunction - and thats it.

Also how did the totches become the runners property to sell off for stupidly large sums - nthey should have remained the property of the olympic body , then any such sales could have been used to defray some of the expenditure

Because the geniuses that organised all this decided the runners could buy the torches as keepsakes (for ca £200 IIRC). Not obvious what'd happen really

The Torch finally arrives at the streets of East London . . .

'ere! Both his feet are the same way round!

Well spotted! I've only just noticed that, hahaha.

Anyway, you know that eBay bid on the Olympic torch?

I got a nice set of films and TV series collected ready for when the crap starts and all the soaps get moved to the other channels.

The paraded an Olympic torch around work today, a colleague of mine insisted we had our picture taken holding it so I did....... Is it wrong that I'm still very "MEH" about it?

Pity you hadn't known it was coming - you could have taken your kit in and may have got some decent photos of it....

I'm having fun with our H&S Hitler, oops representative.... It passes our office quite early one day.. I want to be on the roof (it's got railings) and 400mm on a tripod - take pics... apparently, I have not been "trained" to walk on a flat roof... well ok , I'll wear a safety harness and anchor myself to something..

Surely it's like normal walking, just don't lean over too far...

Anyway back to the thread.. really cannot get the slightest bit excited about the Olympics

ooohhh just one cornetttoooo , giiiivveee it to meeeeeee
a waste of resources
for the economeeeeeeee

HAHAHAHA!!!

My wife said it looked like I was holding something else.......

My cousin said that Beckham had a torch and was known as Golden Balls and that I'll be known as Golden Nob!

I see the Government are crowing that they're £476m under the Olympic budget.

What I don't understand is how can you be *under* budget when you're £1.5bn into a £2bn contingency which is on top of the £7.3bn budget?
Not even mentioning how many times they've increased it...

Sounds like a lot of spin and creative accountancy to me.

I heard that too...
And I agree more spin than a washing machine on speed
;)

I like my sports and will be watching - this is at least REAL reality TV. Wanted tickets but then trying to organise it for 8 people wasn't working out great since I could have 'possibly' only acquired 6 at a time. Then adding up the costs, well, lets just say it would have been cheaper to have an AI holiday somewhere Caribbean. So TV entertainment it will be. I'm glad its in Londonium anyway, saves disruption to my neck of the woods. My concerns are for what will become of the place afterwards, just like Greece, Spain and Beijing - all pretty much ghost towns and bad tourist 'tour spots'. Barcelona was very disappointing, just a concrete desert ..

Just read what is protecting the games 13500 troops
Six sites supporting surface to air missiles
Hms ocean (the biggest we have) in the thames
4 typhoon fighters
Army puma helicopters complete with snippers to take out suicide bombers
Decembers figures of people to provide security was 23,700

I reckon the terrorists have won already by doing nowt
I did check the date and no it wasnt at the start of April
Just think what we could do if the country wasnt broke

Is it wrong that i'm picturing helicopters with massive pairs of pruning shears that can reach out and surgically behead a bomber

Was the Olympics the first step of buggering up the Greek economy?

Is that as ridiculous as the rest?

Ive had words with spell check before

Apparently they reach out and stop them reproducing (permanently)

^^^ Certainly enough to make your eyes water!

I've seen figures as high as 17000 troops involved, rather more than we have in Afghanistan. Cynical or not I doubt we'll ever get the true figures. The private sector in the shape of G4S at it's best! Somebody is no doubt making millions out of this but guess who's paying for it?

I love that film. It's so funny

So, for their money, in addition to allocation of the best tickets going, the sponsors get: exclusive branding opportunities in the torch procession and across the Games, access to the Olympic Lanes across London, exclusive selling inside all venues.

Meanwhile the UK taxpayer pays for the Olympics through tax contributions as well as through ticket prices and is going to be subjected to travel hell, and gets to buy all their food and drink from the biggest McDonalds in the world.

And all the time we're told, "It's unpatriotic to criticise the job I'm doing organising these Olympics", "The only fair way of concealing how many tickets went to my mates, and the sponsiors is by a closed ballot", "The Logo (like everything else) should only be criticised long after the Taxpayer could ever get a refund", "Criticising the crass commercialism the Olympics have become is disrepectful to the spirit of the Olympics which was about amateur excellence free of crass commercialism".

When do we get to call for an enquiry and take Lord Seb's salary back?

Fed up of the bloody thing now (mind you I have been for some time!). The cost, inconvienience and the fact that it is a moneymaking scheme for the crooks in the IOC and major corporations leave a very bad taste in the mouth. Oh, I also can't stand athletics or most of the other fringe sports that are involved. Although I do find lady high jumpers strangly appealing.

Down with the olympics!

Maybe you should try looking at the ladies beach Volleyball?
Thats curiously apealing but I have no idea why

Yep and roll on the end of August

When is this olympic twaddle actually on?

I record the paltry amount of tv that is worth seeing so I don't see any of the adverts for it :)

When is this olympic twaddle actually on?
I have it on good authority, that its "sometime soon" :D
And apparently lasts about a month.....

The Golden Cheesegrater has passed through my town today.

This is my take on it . . .

As always Ian

I have got no interest whatsoever in the Olympics and not looking forward to getting it rammed down our necks from every angle once it starts.

But then again I am a miserble old git.

Did anyone read where the security had to take their chocalate bars out of the wrappers and wrap them in plain paper, in case they transgressed the advertizing rules

It was later said (after publication) that someone was being extreme and the order had been cancelled
Its not a farce these games you know someone is serious somewhere
