Not making light of the 3rd offence here, but 2 year ban for a bite as people are suggesting is ott
While not excusing it, it is not as bad as tackles that can put a player out for a season or even life. Even if it's a 3rd offence surely it's not right to ban someone far far longer than say a 2 footed leg brake.
To a certain extent I agree with you. As a solitary incident the reaction would be OTT, I don't know if FIFA will view this as solitary incident and not take domestic incidents into account - I guess we will find out soon.
If we look at the following, which are the worst? Be interesting for people to order them in terms or worse and suitable punishments.
1) Spitting at someone
2) Racially abusing someone
3) Potentially career ending tackle
4) Biting someone
5) Headbutting someone
6) Homophobic abuse
7) Punching someone
8) General abusing of peoples families etc.
Clearly there are others incidents, just top of my head. For me they are all bad, and you could argue the case for one over the other dependant on your point of view. I'm not sure why biting is viewed as worse than some of the above, I guess it's just more shocking than breaking someone's legs as it's so unusual. With Suarez of course he is guilty of more than one.
For all my joking previously I hope he get the help he clearly needs. He deserves a decent ban due to his repeated issues. On the plus side for Liverpool fans if he gets an international ban only he'll be fresher for the season ahead. I can't see Liverpool shipping him out, he's too important - unless he did get some huge domestic ban, in which case they might consider sacking and suing him, but not a hugely likely scenario.
