The Fabulous Fuji X owners thread

A question for Lightroom Classic Users. Like many, I love the JPEG output of the Fuji cameras and consequently often shoot in jpeg+raw. The downside is of course ending up with 2 copies of everything to manage. But I notice that if I shoot raw only, on import, LR will initially show the preview image with jpeg settings applied. So for example, if I'm shooting raw only but with camera set to Acros B&W, then initially I'll see a B&W preview image but that then reverts to a generic colour image once LR has fully built it's previews. Is there any way for LR to retain the jpeg recipe on the initial import rather than it applying its own reset to the image? It obviously has the data on import.

Not on my computer at the moment. I think you can tell Lightroom to retain camera settings on import.

Thank you. I think I may have found that option on the preferences menu. Under presets, I've changed the Raw default to camera settings instead of Adobe. I'll see how that works.

I quite like messing around with film recipies on my XT5 so I have watched some videos about Fuji film simulations in Lightroom. If you go onto the colour proile at the top of the edit panel and select custom you can see all fuji film simulations on there and apply them to the RAW. Apparently however, they are Adobes best guess at replicating the Fuji film colours and not an exact match. So it may the be JPEG preview you see is Adobes guesstimate rather than a genuine Fuji JPEG file.

Maybe not exact, but it is pretty close. Even looking side by side.

From X-Pro2 release, Fujifilm have worked more closely with Adobe in both handling of RAW files and film silumations, the one though that Fuji say is better in camera are the Acros one's where Fuji have kept the recipe to themselves. - this info was gleaned from a conversation with a Fuji Product Manager several years ago.

Anyone ever played with the smaller X-Trans sensor cameras, like the XQ2 or X20/30? Still looking for/considering a cheaper option for every day carry and something very slim to have on the bike. XQ2 is a great bike option; might not be much better than an iPhone but that zoom could come in handy!

As for the X30; looks like a lovely unit but wondering if it'd just be better to get an X-E3 or X100F...

In all honesty I wouldn't bother with any of the smaller sensors, yes they can give great images in excellent light but more often than not the images will have a lot more noise in them than you expect.

If you want to stay with Fuji, then I'd go for an X100T or X100F both of which are excellent little cameras

Or just get an AF pancake lens for your X-T50

Or not buy anything, use your phone, and put the money to getting a 70-300 for the X-T50 which is on your shopping list.

My first Fuji was an X30 and I loved it. I eventually traded it in for an X-T10 and stayed with interchangeable lenses since.

I still miss it though. Like all cameras at the moment, the second hand prices are bonkers for what it is so I won't pick up another, but I would definitely pay ridiculous money for an updated version.

I do have the Viltrox 40mm on the X-T50 but its still quite awkward and heavy when on the bike. Have been quite surprised how much more cumbersome the X-T50 feels than the X-T20; and it is thicker and heavier due to the IBIS.

A little compact to slip into a pocket (and without IBIS too - i've read reports of IBIS cameras dying on bike rides) does appeal; and something like the XQ2 is old enough to not be too expensive. I'm not wed to Fuji though, especially if its a fixed lens camera. At the end of the day, if I'm riding my bike and I fall off, I don't want to do it with £1400 worth of camera and lens about my person!

They look like lovely cameras to be fair. The X20 seems quite popular given it has a 'proper' viewfinder. I think I'd discounted them as a bike-carry as they're basically the same size and weight as an X-E3 or X100F.

Currently, I'm feeling like a cheap, decent compact for the bike, a small/fixed lens body for everyday plus my X-T50 (or maybe X-T5 eventually) for more serious applications would be a decent setup.

Or, I just stick to my phone and X-T50 :p

I have a large birthday beginning with a 4 and ending in a zero coming up; so I'm popping that lens on the Big Birthday list and crossing the fingers!

I use an xt30ii with a pancake lens when I’m on my bike. Used to use an xf10 but sold it, and regret doing so.

Do you carry that about your person or on a frame bag? Think I'm going to pick up one of these: https://lumiereandco.com/collections/all?filter.p.product_type=Cycling+Camera+Strap
I used to carry it in my back jersey pocket or a chest pocket on my jacket. I discovered the cameras got a bit sweaty so switched to a Topeak hip pack.

I don’t trust cameras in my frame bags, they’ll get bounced around too much and may get damaged. When things get too rough, it’s always a bit less jiggly on my body than the frame.

I use one of these, but any will do

Hip pack

Also wear it across my chest, easy access and even less jiggling. It’ll fit larger cameras, batteries and filters if needed. Also snack, phone etc. it compresses to nothing or expands to hold lots of gear if needed.

Your dad might have had a Ford Capri in the early 70s but what you wanted him to have was the 1974 Homologation Special Capri Cologne built for European Championship Racing with the 3.4 Quad Cam Cosworth GAA Engine (450+ bhp)

My dad had a Capri in the 80's. It was the first car I ever drove (don't tell him that though!).

Cheers. Yeah, I was aware of the sims built into LR. Adobe have made a good job those in fairness. My question really related to baking the simulation in at point of shooting so intent was carried through to LR even in the raw file, without having to import a jpeg. Looks like I have that covered now. Cheers.

Sorry, nothing special to share yet, but I've tested my new Viltrox Air trio (25/1.7, 35/1.7 and 56/1.7) and...wow. Absolutely incredible performance for the money. Not only are they super sharp wide open, but they render well and are cheap as chips! No idea how they would hold up for a pro, but for a fair weather photo hobbyist like me, these things are surely unbeatable?!

Nothing interesting from the 35/1.7 yet but its characteristics are similar, with more pop. Need to go on a proper shoot!

Has anybody found any satisfactory non-genuine rear lens caps for Fuji x cameras? I've posted in the wanted section on here but I feel it might be unlikely I find any.

They're about £13 + postage for new ones. It's a bit of a joke for a small piece of moulded plastic but is the fall back option. I need three of them and that would be nearly £50 delivered. I wouldn't feel like I had much to show for my outlay!

I realise eBay and amazon are full of non-genuine ones but my experience of these in the past on other mounts has been that they never fit right. Either too tight or too loose and actually the only reason I want some in the first place is that the ones that come with Viltrox lenses are a really poor fit on fuji lenses (far too tight) which is a pain when switching between lenses. But maybe some of you have purchased third party ones that are actually okay?

I bought a body cap from a seller on eBay and it was totally fine. They do a rear lens cap too. For the sake of £3 its worth the risk!

I did GAS I won it on Sunday but wanted to wait until it had arrived and been checked before announcing.

Sold as new with less than 50 shots taken. Price paid £503 delivered..

Focus peaking with manual lenses has just suddenly stopped happening. I've checked its enabled etc. Its bizarre.

What obscure setting have I accidentally hit to turn this off...

Daft question, but is the camera switched to manual focus?
