LR or Capture1 don't have the facility to show the focus point, which are the two applications I have (although Fuji's own might.....). I have never had any issue resting the 100-400 on the ledge of a hide before, I think it's "automatic" in that it senses if a tripod or similar is being used.

Few things:
The egrets seem to be in focus and well exposed. So I don't think it's a camera issue.
The kingfisher is rather small in the frame. cropping so far in, its obviously not going to show well. There also seems to be a fair amount of shake so it's hard to tell what exactly is in critical focus though it doesn't seem far off the kingfisher.
So if the light was low it's very well possible camera could have struggled to gain critical focus on such a small subject and then maintain it in AF-C. In such cases for a static subject it might have been better to try AF-S.

I don't think it was shake, that Kingfisher was shot at 1/1000, and as I said, I was using the frame of the hide to steady the camera. Now, if it's because the OIS is on, I need to rethink how I shoot.

Here's one of the Egret at 100%. Thee eye is in focus, the camera was again resting on a window ledge, OIS is on, but it's noisy, very noisy for 400 ISO. The details will be able to be pulled back in post, but the moment I do that, the noise amplifies and the file is unusable. I've tried it with C1 as well with similar results.

I'm sure it's something that either I'm not doing right, or the camera set up needs to looked at. What I intend to do today is go to a local lake, shoot some of the ducks, handheld and with a tripod, also change the metering modes and see what happens... I may also have a crack with a T2 as well and see how that does.egret1.jpg

What about trying a total camera reset, just to see if it helps.

Yeah, I've decided to do that, ditch the BBF for now and see what the results are like. The only difference between the T2 & T3 set up is that I don't have BBF set up on the T2.
 
I'm looking at saving some space on my current Fuji set up. I currently carry around a lee 100mm filter kit with 105mm landscape CPL and various ND filters. I'm looking at going to a few circular filters and step up/down rings. Id ideally prefer to keep my 105mm lee landscape polariser.

My largest filter thread lens is 72mm (10-24mm) going down to the 58mm (18-55) with a few inbetween. Would it be possible to use a 72-105 step up ring on the wide angle 10-24mm lens or would this be visible on the images? I cant find a straight 72-105mm step up so it would be 2 or 3 step up rings combined.

Anyone do similar?
 
@Jelster what software are you using? if LR check to see what the default in there is set to on sharpening, Adobe seem to think 40 is the correct default value and that's too high unless you use masking to narrow sharpening down to the areas you actually want it. If yours is set to that this could be causing the noise, I reset default sharpening in LR to 0 and only add as needed, which I do pretty subtle and use masking.

The noise on the Egret shot looks very harsh for ISO400, should be much cleaner and finer. I would only expect that kind of noise at more like 1600-3200

This won't help with AF of course but the others have made suggestions on that

Keith, I am very used to using LR and always set the default sharpening to a max of 5. Any "real" sharpening, if required is done in PS. I have other images that I have shot with the T3 & 100-400 @ 400 ISO without any issue. The only thing that I recall changing since first getting the T3 is the BBF. A full reset when I get home...

Very strange day today, just before I left home to go and help Mum I got an email from Wex saying my XF56mm f1.2 has been dispatched. So I phoned Wex and said I had not put an order in at all and that I was going to get a lens but it was the 23mm, they gave me the persons name who had ordered the 56mm and all I can say is..... Thank so so very much Mum, I look after you because I`m your son and I love you. Turns out Mum ordered the 56mm for me as a Thank you for all the help I have been to her.

Very nice of your Mum to do that, of course she knows you don't do it for reward but she probably also knew you'd not allow her buy it for you if she'd told you :)

Thanks Paulie, I`m well over the moon about it and I said to Mum here is £480 as I want to split the price so we are both very happy.

So, the Viltrox is packaged up and ready to go back to Amazon. Nothing at all wrong with the lens, I love it. It's just too front heavy on the T3, and without ibis, it's casing camera shake. (Definitely sure part of this is me too) So it's back to the 56 for the time being, and then an H1 once the refurb shop has them back in stock. Then if funds allow I'll get another Viltrox

I know the feeling, there's never a sale like that on when I have money. With CJ you have to compare the market too as they are usually about 10% higher priced than many others, but there will often be nice deals like this if you can catch them.
