The Fabulous Fuji X owners thread

I have recently bought an X-T5 and I'm loving it! It's paired up with the 23mm and 50mm lenses, both F2, such a nice small and capable package.

I was wondering if anyone has recommendations for after market battery?

My recommendation is not to bother with an aftermarket battery, and to get the official Fuji one. Or one of the Fuji recommended power banks and charge up via USB C.

I use Hahnel and charge them in the official Fuji dual charger (optional extra)

Thank you, maybe I'll look into the official one! To be honest the original battery lasts pretty well and I haven't had the need to charge it halfway through a day, it's more because I'm planning a long trip through Asia and I'd like to have the safety net of an extra battery in case for some reason I need to spend the night somewhere with limited access to electricity, so having an extra battery already charged would be ideal.

Thank you for the suggestion, I hadn't heard about this before, so will look into it!

Edit - just had a look and it's about the same price as the original one, any reason why you chose it instead of an official Fuji? Thank you!

Got mine from eBay . Bought a twin pack actually. They were a good price at the time £89

Yeah, I had assumed I would be cropping a lot of the photo away to get back to a reasonable rectangle.
Cost is the limiting factor for something I don't plan to use very often.

Swap out the 23mm for the 27mm and theres nothing in it. I can't see any reason to pay the premium prices for an X100 at the moment.

And once you take into account height, the X-Ax cameras hold a lot of appeal if you're okay with a Bayer sensor; otherwise the M1 is a good compromise:

I'll be looking at picking up and M1 or an X-Ax body once I have a 27mm locked down. Totally fine for a point and shoot/bike & hike setup.

That 27mm is f2.8 isn't it? If it is that's apples and oranges isn't it?

If you want a camera with a 35mm equiv f2 lens a 40mm equiv f2.8 lens I suppose could be a consideration but also, for some people, maybe not.

Anyway. I'm sort of happy with my X100f but it's just not getting used as most of the time when I can get out faced with the X100 or my Sony A7 the chances are I'll take the Sony. I'll see how I feel after a bit more time and a think but the little used X100 although a lovely thing might have to go.

I would love a X100V but in truth the X100F is very good and I should use it more. I am sure that eventually a X100V will come into my hands! ;)
 
It might be just my imagination or copy variation but I think the lens on my X100f is softer at f2 than the one on the X100s I briefly had.

Has anyone else seen any variation in copies of the f2 lens?

Apart from a different focal length and losing a full stop of light. The X100 series just has something. I really want one, just for days out and holidays. I know I could put the 23mm f2 on my X-T4 and get basically the same images, but I still want an X100V

I have both the X100 and X100F, my F is a lot sharper at F2 than the original X100 - but the X-Trans3 sensor is inherently sharper.

All the X100/S/T/F display a degree of softness at F2 - the X100V 'fixed'[ this with a new version of the lens.

There is something special about the X100 series - and no ILC Fuji with a lens comes close - IMHO

I could be wrong but I don't think what I saw is sensor related, I think it's the lens. I've just done a bit of googling and I think it's the same lens on the f as the s so maybe all I'm seeing is some copy variation. It's only at close distance and it's not a biggie for me.

It is the same lens, but it is well known that Fuji X100F's have 'extra' sharpening in firmware that makes the lens appear sharper. The fact that you think yours is soft doesn't surprise me. Mine is still soft at F2, but unless you are close focussing you can certainly live with it.

I've had a bit of a phobia about fixed lens cameras as I'm worried about sensor contamination. I know a fixed lens camera is probably less likely to suffer it but if it does it'll probably mean a trip to a workshop whereas contamination on a changeable lens camera is easy enough to clean.

It's probably just me... and I do have two fixed lens cameras now. The Fuji X100f and a Panasonic TZ100, so I am trying to get over it :D

I've never even used an X100 series camera, I just want one badly. I know I can do a 48 hour loan of one from Fuji but I haven't yet as I know it would end up costing me £1600 in the end.

True and something I'd never thought of. I suppose if you bought the weather sealing filter and an X100V ended up with sensor contamination it would be a warranty claim as they're supposed to be weather sealed.

Remember they are only weather sealed if you put on a front filter.

I agree. I think the X100V, in particular, is one of those cameras where the end results is greater than can be explained by its specification.

Long shot but is anyone using an X-T5 with the Peak Design capture clip system? I've noticed that the dual plate that you mount to the camera blocks the battery door. Was thinking if anyone uses a Smallrig 4136 bracket with it and knows if this would allow the dual plate to be mounted to the bracket without blocking the door?

So did I, but when I got one, I couldn't settle with it.
 
I didn’t say it wasn’t a compromise! The point was, you can get a similar size body+lens for less than an X100v.

The results aren’t going to be a million miles off either, I’d have thought. As a beginner I can’t really conceive of the real-world difference the 23mm f2 lens vs the 27mm f2.8
 
I know the X100v is small and great to travel with, but as a UI....what i learn from using the X100, I am not 100% a fan of the aperture ring.

The first thing is that the 2 bumps/grip is at the wrong place. Currently it sits perfectly to either side of A on one end and F/2 on the other. But for me, the camera defaults sitting at F/2.0. So the bump is not at the 9 and 3 o'clock position but more a 10 and 4 o'clock position. I wish it gets closer to 9/3 position when its at F/2.0, especially with one side really close to the switch between OVF and EVF, making that space really tight.. But that isn't going to happen, meaning the alternative is to have more of the grippy surface around the aperture ring, rather than just 2 little bit.

So.....a normal lens with a normal aperture ring where the grips are all round is what i am used to. So whilst yes, I would sacrifice size, but I get better UI.

There is a 1 mechanical shot taken X-Pro 2 on LCE for £800...that is £200 more than the last one i saw 6 months ago.

What is going on with the Fuji market? There is a secondhand X100V for £1599 as well.

Anyone willing to nit pick or obsess will probable tell you there's a difference between 23 and 27mm and I'd agree and then there's the difference in light gathering and depth of field. In good light or if you're not interested in shallower depth then the aperture differences may not matter but it will matter to some people.

So all in all there are differences between a 23mm f2 and a 27mm f2.8 and I'd say the differences are real world and such that someone looking for a 23mm f2 probably wouldn't be happy with a 27mm f2.8 unless it offered some other benefit, like being very cheap or special in some other way. Also, these cameras are APS-C and so arguably are better suited to the wider aperture 23mm f2 as it could allow the user to keep the ISO down or the shutter speed up in some situations.
 
I can't imagine anything but the most niche situation where 4mm focal length couldn't be fixed with your feet, and 1 stop of extra ISO (or even a mix of ISO and shutter speed) changes the image from good to crap.

If either of those things can ruin your image to the point you can't work around it, it probably wasn't a very good image to begin with.

Jamie, IMO that last sentence is just so condescending and wrong headed. Why should I or anyone else have to work around something if there's a better option available that doesn't involve additional work arounds? Don't answer that as after this post I'm done with this conversation as it's going nowhere. Comparing a 23mm f2 to a 27mm f2.8 should be pretty easy and obvious and shouldn't need post after post after post.

If you're used to the focal lengths then the difference between 35mm and 40mm (in FF) will be noticeable and the difference between f2 and f2.8 will also matter for light gathering and also if you want the shallowest of DoF too. I can see the difference in use between 28/35, 35/40, 40/50 and even 50/55mm and that's before we get into the implications for shutter speed and ISO and depth. If you can't see that these differences will matter to some people there's really nothing more to say, it's all been said and if you can't see it... you just don't get it ;)

I think he is asking that, if you had to choose, would the compromises presented by a 27mm f2.8 on a changeable lens camera bother you enough to choose an X100v with its 23mm f2 lens instead…?
