The Fabulous Fuji X owners thread

Maybe not if that's with lens. Was expecting 500-600 body only so not far off

£614 if the exchange rate is anything to go by... About £80 difference between the X-M1 body and kit price so perhaps £535 ish for body only? Perhaps? Maybe? Wishful thinking?

Maybe £100 cheaper at Panamoz/DR once prices settle? I can stand £450 for body only.

A quick 16mm test...

The close focusing distance is mighty impressive, almost fisheye like. Will take some proper photos at the weekend, trying to keep the above two happy and occupied at the moment as the wife is poorly :)

The dof is so shallow on that 2nd shot it looks like youve decapitated the cat

Nice and sharp even wide open

So i took my first trip out in anger with the camera today, decided to shoot jpeg for the first time in my life. Ha quite a few focus problems in what was quite good light, which bothers me a bit. Changed the size of point between 1 and 3, any bigger that 3 and you can't really select a point to focus on very easily. I found it would completely miss a bird on a branch and focus on the trees behind instead.
I did also find out how narrow the DOF is too, surprising for a crop. So here are some SOOC shots for you all to tear apart....

I tried out the 11mm macro tube on the 56mm today.I'm impressed - I'll definitely need to spend a bit of time getting the hang of the new focal ranges with the tube in place though.

@ukaskew chris do you have the extension tubes?

Nope I don't. Am I right in thinking they reduce the minimum focusing distance? If so, the 16mm is already focusing something ridiculous like 4 or 5 cm from the front element (with the hood on you can be touching your subject and still achieve focus). In my cat picture above I bopped his nose a few times!

I don't know enough about them to be honest, would they work with a lens like that?

The 11mm does but not the 16mm extension on the 16mm Lens according to fujis chart that was posted a few pages back. Says it reduced working distance on 16mm to 1cm. Wondered how much distortion there would be with extensions on it

They also change the magnification ratio by a fair bit on some lenses, but varies lens to lens

Is 0.91 just short of 1:1, or does it not work like that?

I'm not sure if my cat will accept me poking a lens 1mm from his face ;)

The biggest problem with extreme working distance is trying to sneak some light between the lens and subject.

There is also some effective light loss with the tubes - you'll need a longer exposure with a tube on than off for a fixed f-stop. They are fun bits of kit though!

@ukaskew You've got it right - a 0.91 mag means that if you took a pic of a ruler then the 1mm lines would have an image size of 0.91mm on the sensor. 1:1 and they'd be the full mm.

@ukaskew just seen your blog has been linked to on the Fuji PhotoMadd fb page. :)

Ah thank you so much, this has been bugging me as I've had 300 unique visitors from FB in the past two hours and there is no way of searching to see where exactly on FB it's coming from.

I think it must have cropped up elsewhere on FB too as it's been pretty busy lately,

Nice set of images David, the butterfly shot you have controlled the exposure & lighting very well.(y)

George.

I don't remember getting this much free time to go out with my camera shortly after having a kid...in fact, 8 months and a day later I still don't!

My son is 3 years old and I still don't get that much free time, and it's even less if he comes out with me given he can move under his own steam, and move damn quick at that LOL

So have I broken a golden rule of doubting the autofocus on the XT-1? Just wanting some feedback from those that have been using one for a while as to if I may be doing something wrong, or if focus can be a issue with the 18-135?

Focusing in what way and on what in what situation?

One thing i have noticed with the 50-140 is that if it has focused longer on a previous shot, it has a hard time focusing shorter on the next shot if there is something behind it as it thinks you want to focus on that... Does that make sense or is it gibberish? Makes sense to me.

I understood AF on the 18-135 was pretty good. In my experience it's incredibly rare to miss focus on a relatively static subject with the X-T1, eerily so in fact. Compared to my DSLR days it's been pretty remarkable.

As an example for the wedding last weekend, of say 700 static shots, I had three that completely missed focus, that was even shooting with the 56mm 1.2 wide open amongst others.

Not many problems here, only sometimes with fast tracking focus :)

I know what you are talking about. Sometimes I would struggle to acquire focus with my 55-200 attached to my xt1 when shooting birds in the woods, although it can see the bird in the frame (mid sized focus point in the centre) it will still try to focus on the branches behind. I just put it down to partly user error partly limitations of a mirrorless system.
