The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

If I was a betting man, then I'd say it was user error so will try again tomorrow.
Lol, not sure how though, if you can get it working at f1.6 you should be able to get it working at f1.4, it’s not as though you need some fancy different technique ;)

I've never needed to stop down with my cameras with eye detect so something seems amiss but perhaps it was just something weird to do with the light and contrast at the time? Just to discount that it's worth trying another subject to see if it happens again.

Hope it's either a non issue or you get it sorted Dave.

FWIW my A7III is rather hit or miss with eye detection regardless of the lens used including the 55 f1.8.

As it's a bit quiet and I'm sat here looking at pictures.

I took this one some time ago, very probably with a film era 50mm but I can't remember which one. Anyway, I don't think I've ever seen so many horses on the beach.

Tried my Samyang 50mm FE II eye af again today, taken about 40 shots overall with just one miss, I’m happy with that (y)

In what way is it hit and miss? There’s not much out there about the A7iii having issues although I did find one thread about front focussing and one about it sometimes not selecting the nearest eye if the face is almost square on but not quite. I’ve noticed the latter if using ‘wide’ AF so use the single point tracking to select the eye I want.

AF50mm worked well today wide open, no people shots but it was quick. Looking at getting a OM-DE-M5 mk iii as love the look of them.

As well as Sony?

I can't see myself selling all my MFT kit anytime soon as it does stuff my A7 can't, but I have thought of trying to sell some of it.

They are pretty cameras, not sure I’d buy a camera just because it looks nice though ;) I really like the looks of the Nikon Zfc

I will stay with Sony and was going to get another A7 III, but changed my mind so just having a look at other brands to go along side on my Sony kit.

I think MFT can still make sense, for me it's because they're compact, fast and can shoot silently but that's because I have an ancient A7 which is slow and doesn't have an electronic shutter. I'm not sure I'd buy a MFT camera if I had a more modern A7x as MFT might not have the speed and silent shutter advantages. Still be smaller though especially if you factor in longer lenses.

I nearly bought a Panasonic G100 recently. It's a small SLR style camera and caught my eye because it's small, has the 20mp sensor and apparently has a rather nice evf, I still might get one but I keep telling myself that I have three MFT cameras and really don't need another.

I know it is a bad case of gas, BUT I know I am going to get another camera it's just what one. Even looked at the Sony 50mm GM lol bit to costly lol

This is where my liking for film era primes helps me as I can research, hunt and buy them on a whim and it doesn't really cost a lot, just £10's rather than hundreds.

PS.
Lately I've been using this a lot and I love it.

That's a 16mp Panasonic GX80 with a 14mm f2.5. You can get the camera for around £200 or so and the lens cost me £105. It has more DR than my old Canon 5D had :D I also like the GM5 and 20mm f1.7 but GM5's are rare and expensive and apparently prone to contamination under the sensor glass. You can carry one all day long in one hand though :D IQ is nice too.

I have the EM10-2 with 12-32mm pancake for dog walks as the camera and lens combo is 200g lighter than the A9ii body alone.

Yup.

I often take MFT when I think even the smallish A7 is too much.

I think the trouble with having two systems is what do you take? Or do you take it all?

I find things bad enough with my reasonably small gear count at times..... I went through a phase of taking my film camera with me and that fizzled out....

The worst is going out all night when I need to cater for sunset/sunrise and Milky Way!

I try to only take one lens unless it’s something like motorsport where I know I’ll need more.

We've got the same camera/lens for my wife.
I've tried it but can't seem to get used to it after using the A9.
She hardly uses it and I've often thought about selling it and putting the cash towards a Sony bridge type camera that's easier to take out on my dog walks....

Significant back and front focus at least half the time. Combined with the shutter button being temperamental I think sending it for checking and cleaning of the button plus AF is becoming essential.

I'd thought about picking up an A7IIIr to use while it was away, then choosing one to keep, but I'll probably just send it and make do with the wife's E-M10.

Fingers crossed they sort it (y)

The shutter button is a common problem across all the Sony bodies, dirt, dust etc get stuck behind it. They will clean it and send it back.

Not sure what the problem would be with the a.f.

I have 2 systems, canon 7Dii and this purchase the Sony A6600 and I mainly use my A6600 ( because of the Eye AF ) with Sigma MC-11 adapter to mount my Canon L grade lenses and sigma bazooka 150-600 contemporary canon fit.
The big difference is the keeper rate of the A6600 over the 7Dii as both produce very good IQ with A6600 slight ahead because of newer sense, AA filter not affecting IQ and properly the extra 4mp !

So the A6600 has a better keeper rate even with adapted lenses, that's impressive (y)

The eye AF is not corner to corner, and AF is slightly slow than with native e mount, even my sigma 18-55 f2.8 contemporary a native e mount is very quick.
I am surprised myself, though I am using L glass and tge sigma MC-11 works very well with ef mount sigma lens like my 150-600 contemporary !

Look here as some of my latest deer photos are with A6600 and Canon L glass

All camera and in the description

The Samyang 35mm’s gone back and they’re sending another, 3rd time lucky? If this one’s a dud I’m giving up on this lens and will consider other options, and maybe not even bothering with a 35mm.

35mm seems to be just about my favourite these days.

As its quiet. Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 picture of what's left of the big house at out local park. The house was destroyed by fire many years ago and this is all that remains.

One at f1.4.

I hope the next one is ok.

Other than that there's always the good old Sony 35mm f2.8, 1.8 and that f1.4 GM.

It’s not a lens I use a lot, but sometimes I find that 45mm/50mm can be a touch restrictive such as in the paddock or pits and I think 35mm will work better.

Going through a wee spell of losing or breaking eyecups at the moment 5 in the last 2 weeks.
